Though party-line divi- sion is nearly as old as the republic and polls have long shown unfavorable views of the opposition, the newest Pew Research Center survey shows a worsening of opin- ions of political adversaries. A majority of Americans in both parties now hold very unfavorable views of the opposing political party, the poll found, a irst since Pew began probing the issue. Majorities in both parties see those on the other side as closed-minded, while signii- cant minorities describe them EO ile photo Lisa Nino lights the torch during the 2014 Hermiston Relay for Life. This year’s event is Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at the Umatilla County Fairgrounds in Hermiston. Relay for Life enters 20th year led by two of its founders By TAMMY MALGESINI East Oregonian past two years. Those most engaged in the political process — people who say they regularly vote and either volunteer for or donate to campaigns — expressed even more negative views of the other party. The negativity spilled over into voters’ feelings about their own parties as well. An overwhelming number of people — 87 percent on both sides — said their own party either made them feel frustrated, afraid or angry or some combina- tion of the three. Though majorities on both sides — 64 percent of Republicans and 73 percent of Democrats — said their party made them hopeful, far fewer said they felt enthusiasm or pride. Among Republicans, 23 percent said their party made them enthu- siastic, versus 26 percent of Democrats. Sixteen there isn’t a cure for MCL. “We take every day we can, and so far, he’s doing really well,” she said. Relay for Life began in 1985 when Dr. Gordon Klatt, a Tacoma physician, walked and ran around a track to raise awareness and money for research to ight the disease. Klatt, 71, died Aug. 3, 2014, from heart failure after battling stomach cancer. However, his effort has blossomed into a worldwide event with over 4 million people in more than 20 countries raising money and awareness to save lives from cancer. Hermiston Relay for Life hopes to raise $67,000 this year. People may participate in the effort as individuals or join a team. Republicans were far more likely than Democrats to express frustration with their own party. Still, nearly everyone identifying with a party, and a big majority of those who leaned toward one, said they would deinitely or probably vote for that party’s candi- date for president. “Some people are candi- date-centered, some people are party-centered, some people are issue-centered,” said Christina Greer, a political science professor at Fordham University. “But at the end of the day, I think party-centered politics tend to win out, largely because it’s the shortcut,” she said, noting that going with general feelings about a party is easier than delving into issue speciics. Sizeable minorities — 45 percent of Republicans and 41 percent of Democrats — see the opposing party’s policies as so misguided they threaten the country’s well- being, up signiicantly from two years ago. “The intensity of the feeling is stronger now, this antithetical feeling toward the other party,” said Carroll Doherty, director of political research at Pew. Highly negative views of the other party have grown steadily since Pew began gauging them in 1994, when 21 percent of Republicans and 17 percent of Demo- crats held very unfavorable opinions of the other side. In the latest poll, 58 percent of Republicans and 55 percent of Democrats said the same, a 12-percentage-point jump on both sides in just the Thursday Morning PBS Hermiston Relay for Life celebrates its 20th year by recognizing one of its founders and another long- time volunteer. Lou Ann Wolfe and her husband, Bryan Wolfe, are the event’s grand marshals. Lou Ann, along with Lori Armstrong, who now lives in Beaverton, co-chaired the irst Hermiston event in 1996. “We sort of pulled in a few of our friends and said, ‘We’re going to do this,’” Wolfe recalled. In addition, Jan Evans, who has headed up the silent auction each year, will be honored. The Irrigon woman was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994. Her mother lost her ight against the disease years earlier. Wolfe said Evans has spearheaded getting donations, which features upwards of 400 items. Over the years, the silent auction alone has raised more than $100,000 for Hermiston Relay for Life. “She works at that all year long,” Wolfe said. “She’s collecting things and talking to people. It is truly a labor of love.” When Wolfe irst got involved with Relay for Life she wasn’t yet a survivor, but had been a longtime American Cancer Society volunteer. As a teenager in Wallowa County, she went door-to-door with her youth group to raise money. She was later diagnosed with a basal cell carcinoma and a couple of years ago she was treated for a common form of breast cancer. Bryan Wolfe was diagnosed with Stage 4 mantle cell lymphoma in August 2015. A rare form of the disease — MCL comprises about 5 percent of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas — it most often affects men over the age of 60. Lou Ann said treatment focus for her husband is longevity and livability, as Thursday, June 23, 2016 12 AM 12:30 1 AM 1:30 2 AM 2:30 3 AM 3:30 AngerM. :35 Hot In :05 CR TV Featuring a selection of products and services.
