LOZANO Associated Press HOUSTON — Several professional athletes, including San Francisco Giants pitcher Jake Peavy, Denver Broncos quarterback Mark Sanchez and retired Houston Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt, were cheated out of more than $30 million by an investment adviser in a Ponzi-like scheme, federal investigators said Tuesday. In a lawsuit iled last month in Dallas federal court, the Securities and Exchange Commission alleges that Ash Narayan told his clients he was pursuing a low-risk invest- ment strategy for their money but actually put more than $33 million of it into an Illinois-based online sports and entertainment ticket business, The Ticket Reserve, that had lost money for the last four years. It also says he didn’t tell them that The Ticket Reserve paid him nearly $2 million in inder’s fees for directing their money to the company. “Narayan exploited athletes and other clients who trusted him to manage their inances. He fraudulently funneled their savings into a money-losing business and his own pocket,” Shamoil T. Shipchandler, director of the SEC’s Fort Worth regional ofice, said in a statement. The SEC’s lawsuit alleges that Narayan, The Ticket Reserve, the ticket compa- ny’s CEO, Richard Harmon, and its chief operating oficer, John Kaptrosky, violated antifraud provisions of federal securities laws and a related SEC antifraud rule, and accuses Narayan of violating the antifraud provisions of the Investment Advisers Act of 1940. The SEC said Tuesday that it obtained a court order freezing the assets of Narayan, Harmon, and Kaptrosky. A receiver has also been appointed to manage the ticket business. No criminal charges have been iled. BORDEAUX, France — Spain’s 12-year unbeaten run at the European Champi- onship ended when Croatia rallied for a stunning 2-1 win on Tuesday, sending the two-time champions into an intense, high-proile knockout match against Italy in the round of 16. Ivan Perisic’s 87th-minute winner for Croatia not only ended Spain’s unbeaten run at the tournament that stretched back to European Championships Spain won 2004, it also 4-0. Nikola Kalinic equalized just before halftime when he steered a Perisic cross into the Spain net with a nice back-heel lick. Spain had a chance to retake the lead, but defender Sergio Ramos saw his penalty saved by Croatia goalkeeper Danijel Subasic in the 72nd minute. YOUTH SPORTS: Diamondjaxx split with Irrigon Continued from 1B Baseball PEPSI DIAMONDJAXX 21-5, IRRIGON 16-7 — At Pendleton, the DiamondJaxx split a doubleheader with Irrigon on Tuesday afternoon holding on for a win in a high-scoring game one before a ifth-inning comeback by Irrigon for the win in Game 2. In Game 1, the two teams combined for 37 runs and 28 hits Ryan Stahl was the top offensive performer for the DiamondJaxx going 3-5 with two runs scored and four RBI from the bottom of the lineup. Also having solid games were Matthew Demi- anew (3-4, four runs scored) and Chris Large (2-2, three runs). Cameron Sandford pitched 3.1 innings in relief and earned the win after allowing just two runs and four hits with three strikeouts in those frames. In Game 2, the Diamond- Jaxx led for the irst four innings before Irrigon’s bats came alive in the ifth. Leading 5-0, the Diamond- Jaxx sent Quinn Doherty back to the mound for his second inning of work and that’s when the wheels fell off. Irrigon sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning and tagged Doherty for six hits and seven runs in the inning to come away with a 7-5 lead. The DiamondJaxx started off the bottom of the inning with back-to-back walks to bring the winning run to the plate, however three-straight strikeouts sealed the win for Irrigon. ——— Game 1 R H E IRG 064 311 1 — 16 14 1 PDJ 05(10) 006 X — 21 14 7 Troutman, Roa (3), Henricks (3), Woods (6). The top-half of the Hodgen lineup did most of the damage in the game, with Austin Zaugg (2-3, two runs), Jared Beveridge (2-3, two runs), Daniel Naughton (3-6, three runs), and Wyatt Morris (4-6, two runs, two RBI) pummeled Milton-Freewater pitchers Jacob Chaney and Bailey Debord. Morris also started on the mound for Hodgen, allowing four runs and three hits over three innings. Naughton pitched three innings in relief and gave up one run and one hit with four strikeouts, while Tyler Chichester and Hayden Villers combined for three hitless innings for the remainder of the game. COPA AMERICA: US falls to 2-9-1 against top-ranked teams AP Photo/Carlos Osorio Seattle Mariners pitcher James Paxton, let, and irst baseman Adam Lind try to ield the inield RBI single by Detroit Tigers’ Mike Aviles (14) during the eighth inning of a baseball game, Tuesday, June 21, 2016, in Detroit. MARINERS: Seattle has homered in 14 straight games Continued from 1B Seattle’s Ketel Marte, who had four hits in the series opener Monday, added three more Tuesday. ROTATION SHAKEUP The Tigers plan to bring up LHP Daniel Norris from the minors to start Thursday, and they will put RHP Anibal Sanchez back in the starting rotation to pitch Saturday. Sanchez is 4-7 with a 5.97 ERA, but he’s posted a 1.86 ERA in six relief appearances since being removed from the rotation. “Working hard all the time when I was in the bullpen. I try to put every- thing together — command, speed on my fastball,” Sanchez said. “Just ready for Saturday, let’s see, to put everything in the game.” The Tigers also announced that INF Casey McGehee has cleared waivers and been optioned to Triple-A Toledo. NOT ENOUGH The Mariners have homered in 14 straight games, but Seattle is 5-9 during that span. The Mariners went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position Tuesday. “It is another game that came down to getting runners home from third,” manager Scott Servais said. “We just haven’t been able to do that when it matters lately. Guys know that we’re going through a tough time and they end up trying to ix things with one swing. We probably just need one good day to break out of this.” TRAINER’S ROOM Mariners: RHP Taijuan Walker had an MRI on his right foot that showed no structural damage. Walker’s foot bothered him during a ive-inning, 88-pitch start Sunday. UP NEXT Mariners: Hisashi Iwakuma (6-5) starts against Detroit on Wednesday night, trying for his sixth win in seven starts. Tigers: Rookie Michael Fulmer (7-2) takes the mound after his ive- start winning streak was snapped in his last outing against Kansas City. Over his past six starts, Fulmer has allowed only two runs in 40 innings. Continued from 1B pass in the 86th. Argentina will seek its irst major title since the 1993 Copa — and its irst since Messi’s debut in 2005 — when it plays Chile or Colombia on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey. “That’s what we hope and what we want, to inally achieve that,” Messi said. “We deserve it, for all the good work we’ve been doing all these years.” It might be missing Lavezzi, who fell backward over an advertising sign board and appeared to land hard on his left arm at about the 60th minute. Lavezzi was able to get up several minutes later and left on a cart. Hosting a special, expanded 16-nation edition of South America’s cham- pionship to celebrate Copa America’s 100th anniversary, the U.S. won a dificult group that included third-ranked Colombia and then beat No. 13 Ecuador in the quarteri- nals. But top-ranked Argen- tina and Messi, who turns 29 Friday and is at the top of his game, outclassed the U.S. from the opening whistle and stunned the sellout crowd of 70,858 at NRG Stadium. Messi has helped Barcelona win eight titles in Spain’s La Liga and four in the Champions League, but his Argentina trophies have been limited to the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship for players under 20 and the gold medal in the 2008 Olym- AP Photo/Eric Gay Argentina forward Gonzalo Higuain (9) scores a goal past United States goalkeeper Brad Guzan (1) during a Copa America Centenario soccer semiinal, Tuesday, June 21, 2016, in Houston. The U.S. and coach Jurgen Klinsmann were trying to rebound after getting eliminated by Jamaica in the semiinals of last year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup, losing to Mexico in a playoff for a 2017 Confederations Cup berth and struggling in the semiinal round of 2018 World Cup qualifying. The Amer- icans close the tournament Saturday in the third-place match at Glendale, Arizona. Klinsmann inserted midielders Kyle Beckerman and Graham Zusi into his lineup along with forward Chris Wondolowski because of suspensions assessed to midielders Jermaine Jones and Alejandro Bedoya, and forward Bobby Wood. In an effort to spark offense, 17-year-old Christian Pulisic entered at the start of the second half, and Steve Birn- baum came on in the 60th for Beckerman, allowing Geoff Cameron to move up to midield, and Darlington Nagbe replaced Clint Dempsey in the 78th. Argentina went ahead when Lavezzi played a short corner kick to Ever Banega, who passed back to Lavezzi sprinting from the corner diagonally. Lavezzi beat Fabian Johnson to the ball and poked it to Messi about 25 yards out, in the center of the ield. As the U.S. defense started to come out, Messi one-timed a lick with his left foot over the back line to Lavezzi, who got to the ball ahead of Kyle Beckerman about 7 yards from the goal. He headed the ball over Guzan, who had started to come off his line. Messi doubled the lead after Beckerman slipped and Chris Wondolowski took down Messi, earning a yellow card. Klinsmann screamed at Paraguayan referee Eduardo Cardozo as Messi placed the ball about 26 yards out, a few yards closer to the goal than the foul. After the U.S. set up its wall, Messi bent a beautiful curving drive that went just over Guzan’s outstretched left palm and into the upper corner. Messi moved one ahead Gabriel Batistuta’s career total, according to the Argentine Football Asso- ciation. However, FIFA records Batistuta’s total as 56, including two goals in an exhibition against Slovakia in June 1995. Higuain scored when he burst past John Brooks for Lavezzi’s pass and one-timed a shot that Guzan stopped with a diving save, then poked the rebound into an open net. Messi nearly added a goal in the 83rd with a 20-yard shot that Guzan palmed to safety. Notes: The U.S. dropped to 2-9-1 against top-ranked teams. ... A bare-chested male fan ran onto the ield as the second half was about to start, and he was tackled by security. SCOREBOARD Correction Daniel Naughton also recorded hits in both games of a doubleheader loss by Hodgen Distributing against Walla Walla on Thursday, June 17. Naughton was not included in the list of players to have done such in the article “Hodgen, Pepsi lose twin bills” that appeared in the Friday, June 18 edition.
