DAYS GONE BY 100 Years Ago From the East Oregonian June 16, 1916 Victor Ehrhart, son of Grant Ehrhart, well known farmer, is today lying in a critical condition at St. Anthony’s hospital with but small chance of recovering from a bullet wound inlicted by himself yesterday afternoon when, according to his story told this morning, his revolver was accidentally discharged. He was in the garage at the Peter Tachella ranch on Wild Horse at the time of the shooting. According to the story he told at the hospital this morning, he was extracting the shells from his .38 revolver and had “broken” the gun so that the barrel pointed toward his body. In some way, he says, the revolver was discharged at the time. He ired several other shots afterwards to attract attention, he says. It was found that the bullet had entered just below the heart, had coursed downward, puncturing the stomach twice, cutting an artery and had lodged just under the skin near the backbone. He later succumbed to his wound, as he had lost so much blood that he had no vitality left. 50 Years Ago From the East Oregonian June 16, 1966 A logging truck driver escaped with minor injuries when his loaded truck overturned on a hairpin turn Tuesday morning. Frank Hunsucker, 32, Spray, was taken to Pioneer Memorial Hospital by Oregon state police following the accident. He suffered a minor back injury and was kept in the hospital for observation. Investigating state policeman Curtis Culp said apparently the bunkers on the truck broke loose on the turn on Hepper hill about four miles south of town. This caused the load to shift. The truck tipped over on the southbound lane, spilling logs against the guard rail. Oficers directed trafic around the wreck for about two hours until a wrecker and another logging truck were able to get the vehicle upright. Logs were pulled to the side of the road, where they were to be loaded onto another truck. The truck sustained moderate damage. 25 Years Ago From the East Oregonian June 16, 1991 Pendleton Postmaster Gene Winterton and his wife, Myrna, are recuperating at Grande Ronde Hospital following a freak woodcut- ting accident near Meacham Saturday. Gene Winterton, 53, suffered two broken ankles when a tree fell on him. His wife broke her knee running to his aid. Both required surgery to repair the fractures, Myrna Winterton said from her hospital room this morning.
