Averill, district inspector for the United States biological survey, this morning received word from A. R. Fisher, in charge of economic investigations, that he had been given an assistant in the person of Stanley C. Jewett of Portland. The news is most pleasing to Mr. Averill as Mr. Jewett is gener- ally recognized as perhaps the best authority living on birds and animals of the northwest. For some time he has been making a biolog- ical survey of the state for the ish and game commission and prior to that was a collector for the scientiic department of the U.S. biological survey. His title will be predatory animal inspector and Pendleton will be his headquarters. 50 Years Ago From the East Oregonian June 10, 1966 Request that the whole north end of Morrow County be placed in a major Bureau of Reclamation irrigation project was reit- erated here Thursday following a tour of the area. Morrow County Judge Paul Jones wrote the Oregon congressional delegation May 12 regarding the potential for the large project under BR and sent a copy of his letter to the Spokane Bureau of Reclamation ofice. Thursday’s tour was a result of Jones’ interest in obtaining study for the future development. Oficials of BR from Boise, Portland and Spokane toured about 10,000 acres of feder- ally owned north Morrow land in October to determine the feasibility of such a project. At that time farmers of that area objected, saying it would take too long to get the land under production. Jones stated Thursday that this may no longer be the case. 25 Years Ago From the East Oregonian June 10, 1991 Wrinkles in a prison blue jean factory here need to be ironed out so the program’s success can be measured, members of the Oregon Criminal Justice Council said Monday. Three council members and two staffers spent about four hours touring Eastern Oregon Correc- tional Institution, focusing on the garment factory where inmates are being trained to sew blue jeans. Once the factory is up to speed, the council hopes to track inmates to measure the rate of recidivism, work opportunities outside the prison walls and the crime rate among those who have learned job respon- sibility. However, before the EOCI industries program can be evaluated, it must irst work through “legal and bureaucratic issues” that involve trying to operate a state-inanced program like a private business.
