June 23, 1939-February 1, 2016 Pendleton April 3, 1956-June 4, 2016 6:59 a.m. - A resident on East Jennie Avenue, Hermiston, told police someone threw a “block” through the window of a neighbor’s sedan. 7:35 a.m. - A Milton-Freewater woman reported the theft of her medication. 9:28 a.m. - An anonymous caller at Smitty’s Ace Hardware, 1845 N. First St., Hermiston, told police a vehicle contained a dog with its eye hanging out. 11:06 a.m. - One resident of Juniper Buttercreek Apartments, 986 W. Juniper Ave., Hermiston, told police a neighbor’s marijuana smoke drifts into her place, and the property manager told her to deal with it herself. The caller asked police for options. Oregon law allows landlords to ban marijuana use in their properties. 11:18 a.m. - A manager of Space Age Travel Center, 77522 Highway 207, Hermiston, reported the business was the victim of telephonic fraud for $2,298. 1:56 p.m. - The Boardman ambulance responded to the marina for a 70-something woman who may have been suffering from heat exhaustion. The ambulance took her to Good Shepherd Medical Center, Hermiston. 3:18 p.m. - An intoxicated male yelled at customers and threatened to beat one person at the Hermiston Safeway, 990 S. Highway 395. 4:04 p.m. - Residents on Washington Lane, Irrigon, own two aggressive pit bull dogs that entered a neighbor’s yard and attacked their dog. They used a bat and chased off the pit bulls. 6:57 p.m. - A 9-1-1 caller on East Oregon Avenue, Hermiston, asked police to check on a man with a trumpet yelling and screaming in a yard. 7:12 p.m. - A Pilot Rock resident reported the theft of her vehicle. She said she gave a bank card and the vehicle to a person she did not know to purchase and pick up a stove for her Monday, but the person never returned. 9:27 p.m. - Umatilla police responded to a 9-1-1 call about a male pushing a female on Eighth Street. 10:20 p.m. - A Umatilla resident on Sonesta Street reported neighbors were screaming, one yelled for help, and the ight sounded physical. Police responded. ARRESTS, CITATIONS Tuesday •Hermiston police arrested Jerome Martel Price, 31, of Hermiston, on three probation violation warrants and for identity theft, all felonies. •Boardman ire and police responded to a report at about 3:30 p.m. of a ire in the ield behind the Wilson Road Mobile Home Park, 600 Wilson Road S.W., Boardman. Oficers arrested Daniel Dre Strickland, 18, of Boardman, for second-degree mischief, reckless endangering and reckless burning, all misdemeanors. Wednesday •An Oregon State Police trooper at 1:46 a.m. stopped a purple Chevrolet Cobalt for failing to stay in the lane while southbound on Highway 37 near milepost 30. The driver, Trae Micel Baker, 21, of Hermiston, failed a sobriety test, so the trooper arrested him for driving under the inluence of intoxicants. The trooper also arrested one of the two passengers in the car, Jeremy Leon Beard, 23, of Hermiston, who had warrants for failing to report as a sex offender. Police took both men to the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton. Dewey Virgil (Sam) Freel, 76, fell asleep in Jesus on February 1, 2016, at Tendercare Nursing Home in Beulah, Michigan. He was born in Elkhart, Indiana, on June 23, 1939, to Corah and Barbara Freel. In 1960 while serving in the U.S. Army he met and married Karen Altizer. They had two children. He worked at Simplot in Hermiston, Oregon, for 18 years. In 1994 he moved back to Indiana where he met Betty Freel Goorhouse who became his second wife. They married in 2001. Before his inal move to Michigan Sam spent time living in Hermiston with his children and grandchildren. During this time he made many wonderful memories with them. SCHOLARSHIPS Kiwanis give four scholarships The Kiwanis Club of Boardman has awarded four $500 scholarships to graduating seniors of Riverside High School and Irrigon High School to further their education. Scholarships are awarded for class achievement and service to the community and the high schools. Recipients from River- side High School: Stephanie Stokoe is the daughter of Rick and Shari Stokoe of Boardman. She was active in softball, a member of Key Club, and National Honor Society while holding a part-time job. She achieved a rank of third in her class. She plans to attend Blue Mountain Community College to become a certiied EMT and phlebotomist. Jennifer Shimer, the daughter of George and Marie Shimer of Boardman, ranked sixth academically in her class of 57. She is a member of Key Club, National Honor Society, and was senior class president. She plans to attend BMCC, and then transfer to Eastern Oregon University for a degree in business management. Recipients from Irrigon High School: Colten Charles Seelye is the son of Casey and Rebecca Seelye of Irrigon. Colten has been active in Key Club, National Honor Society, football, and FFA. Ranked seventh in his class of 50, he plans to attend Mt. Hood Community College, then transfer to Western Oregon University to study criminal justice. Nicholas Strong, the son of Daren and Dianna Strong of Irrigon, is ranked irst in his class with a grade point average of nearly 4.0. He has been fully involved in band at IHS, a member of NHS, and an instrumental member of his church. Nicholas plans to attend George Fox University studying music and mechanical engineering. MEETINGS HERMISTON Kidney transplant recipient ights organ rejection Friday fundraiser to benefit Irrigon woman By TAMMY MALGESINI East Oregonian Medical bills and expenses are piling up for an Irrigon woman who recently had a kidney transplant. Emily Yang, 22, who was diagnosed with lupus when she was 9, has had multiple surgeries over the years — including a prior kidney transplant when she was 11. Her body rejected that organ a couple of years later and Yang has been on dialysis for many years. Lupus is an autoimmune disease, which means that the immune system mistakes the body’s own tissues as foreign invaders and attacks them. It results in inlammation and can lead to damage of tissues and organs. Calling it a “precious gift,” Yang underwent surgery for the recent kidney transplant May 20. Appreciating the simple things in life most people take for granted, Yang is excited about what the new organ means for her. “From the moment I woke up from surgery, all I can do was just sing, ‘I can pee, I can pee now yay!’ The kidney had started doing its work right away,” she wrote in an email. Yang was released from the hospital within a week, but was required to remain in the Portland area to be close to doctors. After some complications, she returned to the hospital and has been undergoing anti-rejection treatments. Even though she is battered and bruised, Yang is facing her challenges with a smile on her face. “It’s a rough situation but staying positive is the key,” she said. Yang and her iancé, Brandon Jacobs, saved money to help with food and lodging while in Portland for the surgery.
