Page 10A BUSINESS East Oregonian Eight automakers recall over 12M vehicles for Takata air bags By TOM KRISHER AP Auto Writer DETROIT — Eight auto- makers are recalling more than 12 million vehicles in the U.S. to replace poten- tially dangerous Takata air bag inlators. Documents detailing recalls by Honda, Fiat Chrysler, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Ferrari and Mitsubishi were posted Friday by the National Highway Trafic Safety Administration. They’re part of a massive expansion of Takata air bag recalls announced earlier this month. Seventeen automakers are adding 35 million-to-40 million inla- tors to what already was the largest auto recall in U.S. history. In addition, the Japanese transport ministry on Friday announced 7 million more Takata-related recalls covering air bag inlators without a chemical drying agent. Friday’s U.S. recalls include passenger air bags in older models in areas along the Gulf Coast with high heat and humidity. But other areas of the country are also affected depending on the age of vehicles. Takata uses the chemical ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion that inlates air bags in a crash. But the chemical can deteriorate over time when exposed to high heat and humidity and burn faster than designed. That can blow apart a metal canister, spewing hot shrapnel into vehicles. The inlators are respon- sible for 11 deaths and more than 100 injuries worldwide. Two more deaths are under investigation in Malaysia. The recalls are among the irst unveiled by automakers since Takata agreed May 4 to the recall expansion, and more will be announced in the coming week. The recalls are being phased in by the government due to a lack of available replacement parts. Models from 2011 or older in high heat and humidity areas will get irst priority, followed by 2008 and older models in Southern-tier states, then 2004 and older models in the rest of the country. Research has shown that it takes at least six years for the ammonium nitrate to deteriorate. That’s the reason older models get priority. Honda had the biggest recall total on Friday with more than 4.5 million inla- tors, while Fiat Chrysler reported 4.3 million. The Honda total includes about 2,700 Gold Wing motorcy- cles with optional front air bags. Honda says the latest recall covers only about 2.2 million additional Honda and Acura vehicles. The other 2.3 million vehicles were recalled previously for Takata problems. Honda expects the recalls to start in late summer for automobiles and in late fall for the motorcycles. Fiat Chrysler said it’s not aware of any crashes or injuries involving its vehicles Remember these? Pinto, Tylenol and other infamous recalls NEW YORK (AP) — Recalls related to Takata air bags, which have already led to the largest auto recall in U.S. history, keep growing . Takata joins a list of notorious product recalls, some of which were handled better than others by the corporations involved. Here’s a look at some other headline-grabbing recalls: FORD PINTO Ford recalled more than 1.5 million Pintos in 1978 due to the faulty position of fuel tanks. In some cases, the fuel tank burst into lames after a rear-end collisions. At least 27 people died as a result. TYLENOL About 35 years ago, Johnson & Johnson recalled more than 20 million bottles of Tylenol capsules after someone laced the painkillers with cyanide and put them in store shelves in the Chicago area. Seven people were killed. Johnson & Johnson repackaged Tylenol with tamper-re- sistant packaging, showing how a company could emerge from a disaster and improve an industry. FIRESTONE TIRES About 6.5 million Firestone tires were recalled in 2000 because the tires could shred, blow out or fail. Most of the tires were used in Ford SUVs and light pickup trucks. The National Highway Trafic Safety Administration said in 2001 that it received 271 reports of deaths and 800 injuries related to the faulty tires. EASY-BAKE OVENS Nearly one million Easy-Bake Ovens were recalled in 2007 after toy maker Hasbro received reports that kids were getting their hands stuck in the oven’s opening. Some kids sustained burns. KEURIG COFFEE MACHINE Keurig recalled more than 7 million of its single-serve coffee brewing machines after reports that some of them spewed hot liquids and injured people. that are part of the recall. The latest recalls cover mainly front passenger inla- tors without the chemical drying agent. The jury is still out on whether Takata will have to recall millions more inlators with the drying agent. Takata has to prove to the government that those are safe by the end of 2019, or they will be recalled. Before the latest expan- sion, automakers had recalled 28.8 million Takata inlators, so as many as 69 million could be recalled in the U.S. alone. The numbers have raised concerns about Taka- ta’s inancial survival. The Japanese parts supplier has hired advisory irm Lazard to restructure its inances, and automakers likely will have to shoulder some costs. Since the recalled models vary by state and age, ofi- cials say that the best way to see if your car is affected is to go to https://vinrcl. safercar.gov/vin/ and key in the vehicle identiication number. That number can be found on the driver’s side of the dashboard near the windshield or on state vehicle registrations. It may take several weeks for all the newly recalled vehicles to be entered into the databases. Here are models covered by the recalls announced Friday: HONDA: Certain 2003- 2006 Acura MDX, 2005- 2011 Acura RL, 2009-2011 Acura TSX, 2010-2011 Acura ZDX, 2008-2011 Honda Accord, 2010-2011 Honda Accord Crosstour, 2006-2011 Honda Civic, 2005-2011 Honda CR-V, 2003-2011 Honda Element, 2010-2011 Honda FCX Clarity, 2007-2011 Honda Fit, 2010-2011 Honda Insight, 2002-2004 Honda Odyssey, 2003-2011 Honda Pilot, 2006-2011 Honda Ridgeline, certain 2006- 2010 Honda Gold Wing motorcycles.
