Etta was born in Pend- leton to Elsie (nee Spokane) and Gilbert Edward Conner on April 9, 1934. Her parents named her Wyassus (Dance) after her maternal grandmother from Wayam. Etta gradu- ated from Pendleton High School and Portland State University with her B.A. in administra- tion of justice. Becoming an adult during the federal Indian Relocation Act era, Etta lived in Conner Colorado Springs, Albuquerque and Los Angeles. A long-time resident of Portland, she worked at the PSU School of Social Work and sold Avon while being an industrious homemaker. While there, she was secretary-treasurer of the Portland Indian Rodeo Association and a ski-racer in slalom and downhill with club Ski-ente’. Besides being an avid aqua-aerobics regular at the Pendleton RAC, she was also an oil painter and amateur cinematographer. Janet Nadia ‘Jani’ Beamer-Wilson Mervin Lee Lewis Heppner September 15, 1934-May 13, 2016 Hermiston August 11, 1936-May 15, 2016 Janet Nadia “Jani” Beam- er-Wilson, 81, of Heppner died Friday, May 13, 2016, at her home. A graveside memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at 1 p.m. at the Heppner Masonic Cemetery. She was born September 15, 1934, at Pendleton, Oregon, the daughter of John Wesley and Nadia Renee Lasure Scroggins. She was raised mostly in the Portland area where she graduated from Milwaukie High School. She attended beauty college and worked for a time as a hairdresser and later in life she worked in the hospitality ield as a waitress. Jani was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge. She enjoyed doing ceramics, horseback riding, working in her yard and she loved the outdoors. Survivors include her children Douglas Preston, Wallace Johnston and Carrie Vernon; a brother, Edmund Scroggins; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband Neil Beamer; son Gerald Johnston; and sisters Joan, Dorothy and Frankie. Memorial contributions may be made to Pioneer Memorial Hospice, P.O. He was born in Grants Pass, Oregon, on August 11th, 1936. A remarkable life. After graduating from Laurelwood Academy, he served in the United States Army as a corpsman, stationed both in Texas and at Walter Reed Army Hospital. He was honorably discharged in 1958. He then left D.C. and spent the next 18 months on a Harley, taking whatever jobs he could. He saw the country on the way home, a job and a gas tank at a time. Once back in Grants Pass, he met Dona Denise Hahn. They married in November 1959. Dona and Merv had three children. Their young family moved to Hermiston in 1964. Merv, as everyone knew him, loved to hunt, ish and camp. In the 1970s he spent several seasons as a Little League baseball coach. He fulilled one of his dreams and used his G.I. Bill to obtain his private pilot’s license. Merv was a cow man, having raised registered Angus cattle for over 40 years. He always had a project in the works. He was a loving husband, a fantastic father and an especially proud grandpa. There were memorable family vacations to Canada, and all of the Western states. There were a lot of camping trips in between. Merv is preceded in death by his parents Dezzie and Joseph, and his brother Charles. He is survived by brother Delbert. He leaves behind Dona, his wife of 56 years; his son Rodney; daughters Deanna Schalk and Teresa Cameron; and his two grandchildren, Kevin and Nicole Schalk. In respecting Merv’s wishes, there will be no memorial services. He was always willing to help a friend or neighbor, regard- less of time (or timing). In lieu of donations, please honor Merv by paying it forward; and helping out a friend or a neighbor. She was born Dec. 1, 1950, in Johannesburg, South Africa. A celebration of life will be held next week with date, time and place to be announced.
