Page 6A COMMUNITY East Oregonian Thursday, May 19, 2016 TV rafle beneits Camp Meadowood PENDLETON Fundraisers to beneit sister city exchange trip By TAMMY MALGESINI East Oregonian A handful of Pendleton-area students are continuing fundraising efforts for a 15-day trip in July to Minamisoma, Japan. The Pendleton Cultural Founda- tion sister city exchange program provides an opportunity for the students to visit schools, meet govern- ment oficials and visit historic and cultural sites. In addition, the group will tour the site of the 2011 tsunami. Chaperoning the trip is McKennon McDonald, an educator and member of the Pendleton City Council. The student participants are Kipling Bose, Walker Paullus, Journey Hahn, Abby Rinehart and Courtney Canield, all of Pendleton High School, and EllaMae Looney of Nixyaawii Community School. The group has manned a booth at the Pendleton Farmers Market the past couple of weeks. In addition to selling tickets for the upcoming Japanese Cultural Night fundraising dinner, the group assisted kids with a Japanese art project. The students will have a craft sale at this week’s market. Also, tickets to the dinner will be available for purchase. And the public can visit with students about the upcoming trip to Japan. “It has really been an avenue to re-introduce the program to the community since there was an inter- ruption in the travel for a few years,” McDonald said about the farmers market booth. Saturday night’s Pendleton Cultural Foundation Japanese Cultural Night at Pendleton Coffee Bean & Bistro will feature a three-course meal of iceberg salad, Hamachi Platter or Teriyaki Jidori Chicken, and Matcha & Green Tea Panna Cotta. Tickets are $45 and can be purchased at the farmers market booth, the bistro or by contacting McDonald. The event includes a rafle and silent auction. Among the items available are Pendleton Round-Up concert tickets, two round-trip Television > Today’s highlights SeaPort Airlines vouchers, handmade jewelry, coffee and a gift certiicate from the Buckin’ Bean and Pendleton Woolen Mills pillows. Also, a rummage sale is planned June 10-11 at Giorgio’s on Main Street in Pendleton. People can drop off donations Monday, May 23 from 7-8 p.m.; Wednesday, June 1 from 6-7 p.m.; and Sunday, June 5 from 6-7 p.m. For those who can’t make donations at those times, contact McDonald. The student group is available to work for donations around the community. This could include yard work, home projects or other similar group work.
