RECORDS Friday, May 13, 2016 East Oregonian PUBLIC SAFETY LOG WEDNESDAY 9:17 a.m. - A woman running with her dog around 7:40 a.m. on Southwest Goodwin Avenue, Pendleton, saw a dog get hit by a car at the intersection of Goodwin and Main. When she attempted to lag down a Gordon’s Electric employee so he wouldn’t also hit the dog, the driver slammed on the brakes, got out of the truck and started yelling obscenities at the caller in front of two juveniles who were in the passenger side of the vehicle. She requested contact from a Pendleton police oficer. 12:00 p.m. - An employee of Garner’s Grocery & Sporting Goods, 2214 S.E. Court Ave., Pendleton, ran off a man who was standing outside the business asking passers-by for drugs and money. The caller said the man was last seen walking toward Pendleton Market, and had video of his antics if Pendleton police wanted it. 12:06 p.m. - A resident of Diagonal Road, Hermiston, requested contact from a Umatilla County sheriff’s deputy in regards to roosters they had nursed back to health for a neighbor who had previously participated in cock ighting. The caller said the roosters’ owner has requested that they be returned, and is concerned for the birds’ welfare. 12:14 p.m. - An older female black Labrador retriever was found wandering at Hat Rock State Park and was having dificulty walking. An employee of Fuzz Ball Pet Rescue picked up the dog and called the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Ofice when it was discovered to be the same dog that was picked up the previous day wandering on Punkin Center Road; the dog is microchipped and was returned to the owner. The rescue operation was concerned the owner was intentionally trying to dump the dog. 12:43 p.m. - Fishing poles, a case and tackle were reported stolen from the back of a pickup at Riverfront Park, Southwest 23rd St., Hermiston. 12:59 p.m. - A resident of Tri-Harbor Landing Apartments, 210 Klickitat St., Umatilla, reported her ex-boyfriend entered her apartment, stole her wallet and urinated all over the apartment. She requested contact from a Umatilla police oficer. 1:22 p.m. - An employee of the city of Pendleton attempting to turn on the water at a residence on Southwest Ladow Avenue was deterred by an aggressive opossum in the hole where the water valve is located. 1:50 p.m. - Employees of the Sub Zero Motel, S. First St., Irrigon, reported people renting one of the motel rooms destroyed the room and owe more than $900. They requested to ile a complaint for criminal mischief and theft of services with the Morrow County Sheriff’s Ofice. 2:07 p.m. - A traveler was scammed at the Boardman Rest Area, westbound Interstate 84, by people who asked to see $100 bills and then grabbed the money and ran. Oregon State Police is investigating. 4:08 p.m. - A business on Southgate Place, Pendleton, reported a window was broken and a warehouse area broken into, but was unsure if anything was missing. And 10 minutes later Pendleton police also received a theft report from a business on Westgate who said tires were being stolen from the trailers where transfer trailers are stored. 6:25 p.m. - Stanield police received a report of a possibly intoxicated man underneath the gazebo near the train tracks at Bard Park, Stanield. The caller said the man had removed his shirt and thought he might remove his pants as well. Another caller at 6:59 p.m. reported the same man talking to himself and waving his hands in the air. Stanield police were unable to ind the man. 7:49 p.m. - A resident of Bird Haven Lane, Umatilla, returned home to ind her house had been burglarized and a brand new 40-inch TV, still in the box, was missing. The caller said the garage door opener has been missing. She requested contact from a Umatilla County sheriff’s deputy. 8:03 p.m. - Pendleton Emergency Services responded to a residence on Southwest 24th Street for a man who took several creatine monohydrate supplements and was shaking and couldn’t get up. ARRESTS, CITATIONS •The Morrow County Sheriff’s Ofice arrested Kevin Dennis Lee, 28, address not provided, on charges of felony fourth-de- gree assault constituting domestic violence, two counts of felony strangulation and unauthorized use of motor vehicle. Page 5A OBITUARIES John Brinker ‘Cowboy’ Ramos Glenna Marie Sams Echo May 21, 1935-April 10, 2016 La Grande September 27, 1934-May 9, 2016 John Brinker “Cowboy” Ramos died at his home on April 10, 2016, surrounded by his family, close friends and his little dog Sally. Cowboy was born May 21, 1935, in Pendleton, Oregon. He was the third child of Joseph G. and Helen L. (Brinker) Ramos. C o w b o y attended all of his school years in Echo, where he was a standout student and athlete. He played football, basketball, baseball and was involved Ramos in certain county track meets. He graduated from Echo High School in 1953 as the class valedictorian. His senior year he was a starting member on the 1953 state championship basketball team coached by George DeLap. He was also selected to play in the annual East/West Shrine football game. Cowboy went on to attend the University of Oregon (GO DUCKS) until he joined the Navy in 1956 with his older brother Swede. While at the U of O, he became a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity, of which many of his fraternity brothers became close, lifelong friends. He was also involved in the sports program as a pitcher on the freshman baseball team and the quarterback for the freshman football team. He was actually recruited to U of O by Bill Bowerman. While in the Navy he met Elaine Hurford at a college dance when his ship, the USS Hamner DD-718, was docked in Brisbane, Australia, in August of 1956. In 1958 he returned to the U of O after his discharge from the Navy, all the while corresponding with Elaine over the next ive years. He returned to Brisbane in September of 1960, working for the city of Southport, while Elaine taught school at St. Hilda’s Girls School. They were married on January 7, 1961, in Brisbane and returned to the Ramos family farm in Echo on January 28, 1961. They started their family as the irst of ive children was born that October. Cowboy continued to work on the family farm until semi-retiring in the late 1990s. He worked for Stanield/Westland Irrigation District for several years. The job he loved the most was when he purchased a Mitsubishi excavator and an old dump truck to form Somar Excavation. He then started doing jobs for many of the local farmers. It was often said that no one could operate an excavator like him. He was very precise, detailed and extremely proud of his work. He was also a lifelong member of the Echo Quar- terback Club and Pendleton Elks Lodge. He served on the Echo School Board for many years and supported everything that was positive for the school and commu- nity. Cowboy is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elaine “Matt”; daughters Chris “The Banker” Betten- court (Blake) and Jan “The Wing Commander” Zita (Chris “Zeet”); sons John “Bink” Ramos Jr. (LynnDee) and Paul “Peabody” Ramos (Robin); daughter-in-law Stacy Ramos; like a son Rob Hardy; very close nephew Joseph E. Ramos; sisters Joanne “Sis” Harris and Jeanne “Buggs” West (Bill “Big Willy”); brother Sam “Coke” Ramos (Dianne) and like a brother/cousin Mike “Baggs” Ramos (Sandy); grandchildren Nate James (Kris), Jessica Best (Shawn), CJ Zita, Ryan Ramos (Keoni), Lindsey Ramos, RJ Ramos, Makenna Ramos, Connor Bettencourt, Courtney Howard, Meghan Ramos, Jaxon Cook and Karlie Cook; great-grand- children Jacee and Landry James, Daxton Ramos and Christian Best; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members. Louise Carol ‘Keimotke’ Spino-Paxton was well known for her bead work and photography. Her camera went everywhere with her. She married the love of her life in 2006 and together they traveled and attended powwows all over the United States. Louise is survived by her loving husband Don; her mother Lillian; sisters Luella, Laura, Leona and Lenora; brothers Lawrence and Lester; her friend Kay Rose; many loving nieces and nephews; and granddaughter Myrcene. She was preceded in death by her daughter, father, and two brothers. Services were held at Fisher Funeral Home in Albany before leaving for her inal service and burial at the family plot in Mission on the CTUIR reservation. TUESDAY, MAY 17 Albany September 27, 1950-May 7, 2016 Louise was born in Pend- leton, Oregon, to Lewis and Lillian Shock-Spino and was the second of nine children. A member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reser- vation, she attended school and graduated from Pendleton High School. She continued her education at Oregon State University. She went on to work for Oregon State University at the printing/mailing department and retired from there after 30 years of service. An avid sports fan, she followed all the sports programs but especially women’s basketball. She and her husband got to go the Final Four games in Indiana this last March. Louise loved the Beavers! Louise was also very active in softball, playing and later coaching in the Albany recreational league for over 25 years. Through softball she made many lifelong friends and could be seen at the ball park even when she wasn’t playing. Her smile was conta- gious as well as her laughter and generous heart. In 1967 she was crowned Happy Canyon Princess of the Pendleton Round-Up, a title that she wore proudly as she traveled around the Northwest as a representative of Happy Canyon Night Show, making appearances and public speeches. Very active in her tribal customs, she did her own beading of regalia and Glenna Marie Sams, 81, of La Grande passed away on May 9 at her home surrounded by her family and friends. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to noon Monday, May 16 at Loveland Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, May 16 at La Grande Church of the Nazarene, 109 18th Street and Gekeler Lane. Burial will follow at Island City Cemetery. After the burial, a reception will be held at Pat Young’s residence. Glenna was born in Milton-Free- Sams water to Bernard and Ella Taylor on September 27, 1934. She attended Milton-Freewater High School and graduated in 1952. Glenna married Leland Sams on May 23, 1954, in Milton-Freewater. She graduated from Eastern Oregon State University in 1974. Glenna taught elementary school for the La Grande School District for 24 years. Glenna was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority for 63 years; in addition, she participated in the Island City Lions Club, Oregon Retired Educators, and the Union County Fair Board. For four years she served as president of the Oregon Retired Educators. She was active for many years as a devoted volunteer with the La Grande Swim Club and also enjoyed participating in softball and bowling. Among her many hobbies and interests were square dancing, Sweet Adelines, banjo, ukulele, piano, art, monthly pinochle, and reading.
