Page 4A REGION East Oregonian Tuesday, May 3, 2016 Canine competition ills Pendleton Convention Center By KATHY ANEY East Oregonian Rembrandt was chilling. The Old English sheepdog lay on a grooming table getting a beauty treatment Saturday courte- sy of his owner, Jerry Holcombe. In about 45 minutes, Holcombe would lead Rembrandt into one of four rings on the Pendleton Con- vention Center’s main loor and let the dog demonstrate to judges why he is a champion. Until then, how- ever, he lay boneless as Holcombe combed gently through each layer of fur. “This calms him down,” Hol- combe said. Rembrandt, along with about 650 other dogs of 124 breeds, was in Pendleton to compete in the Walla Walla Kennel Club Dog Show. This was the club’s 100th show, though only its irst in Pend- leton. Competition lasted through Sunday. Two of Rembrandt’s sheepdog buddies lay on tables nearby get- ting similar treatment. Marlene Abrahamson, of Sea- beck, Washington, tended to Bizzy, his brown eyes covered by a veil of white fur. She explained why she and her husband, Fred, travel the dog show circuit. “It gets in your blood,” Abraha- mson said. “You see how far you can take your dog. You are with a subculture of friends who you see every weekend.” Other dogs in the grooming room included seven shih tzus, an Afghan and a Beauceron named Lex. On one end of the room, a woman luffed and combed her Kuvasz, a livestock dog that orig- inated in Hungary. She applied mousse and spray and then rubbed some white chalk into his fur. Out on the main loor, four dif- ferent breeds – dachshunds, gold- en retrievers, Newfoundlands and Pembroke Welsch corgis – strut- ted their stuff in separate areas. Each owner ran their dog around the ring and then paused to let the judge run hands over the animal to determine its conformation. This was the beauty show. The talent competition was out back in the Round-Up Pavilion. In one ring, Jan Lewis ran her Shet- land sheepdog, Chloe, through her paces. The dog cleared two jumps, heeled, lay down, sat and came on command. She also retrieved, but Staff photo by Kathy Aney A Shetland sheepdog named Chloe looks up at owner Jan Lewis after retrieving an item that had her scent from a group of items Saturday at the Pendleton Convention Center during the Walla Walla Kennel Club Dog Show. there was a twist. Lewis rubbed her own scent onto a metal ob- ject and gave it to the judge who placed it among other objects on the ground. “Find mine,” Lewis command- ed Chloe. The dog ran to the assortment of objects and sniffed. She took one in her mouth and returned to Lewis, sat and looked expectantly at her owner. Lewis smiled. Lewis spends about 10 hours a week training her dog. She said the two share “an incredible bond.” “It’s fun to see what you can teach an animal,” she said. “You watch the lightbulb go on.” In a ield near the Round-Up Arena, other dogs chased moving plastic bags as if they were rabbits during an event called coursing. In front of the convention center, venders sold an array of products for canines such as leashes, brush- es, jerky, blankets, buffalo horns, scissors, squeaky toys and prod- ucts to keep dogs’ teeth clean and coats shiny. Inside the convention center, some new signage had ap- peared – one handwritten sign on a restroom door prohibited the use of bathroom sinks for dog baths. Debbie Milks, show chair- woman, said participants seem to approve of the club transplanting the show from Walla Walla to the Pendleton Convention Center. Staff photo by Kathy Aney A dog waits to go into the ring Saturday at the Pendleton Conven- tion Center during the Walla Walla Kennel Club Dog Show. “All we’ve heard are good things about the venue,” Milks said, “and there’s room to grow.” The event included back-to- back shows, one Saturday and one Sunday. By the end of the week- end, two dogs had emerged the victors. An Affenpinscher named Seamonkey’s Bazinga (owners Debra and Danielle Nelson, Tiffa- ny Skinner) took Saturday’s Best in Show honors. Mojo’s Continua- tion Of A Myth, an Akita owned by Stacey Borrmann and handled by Alvin Lee, prevailed on Sunday. Not every moment went smoothly. Back in the grooming area, one dog decided she’d had enough pampering.
