Greg Walden, R-Oregon, will visit Umatilla and Morrow counties on Tuesday, May 3, including a stop at the Umatilla Army Depot to talk with local leaders about securing the land for economic development. But irst, Walden will hold a town hall meeting at the Port of Morrow in Boardman to answer questions from residents. The meeting is open to the public, and will begin at 8:45 a.m. at the Riverfront Center, 2 Marine Drive. Later in the day, Walden will arrive in Hermiston for a round table discussion on opioid abuse in Oregon. Drug prevention advocates, physi- cians, law enforcement and families will meet with Walden at 1:45 p.m. at Good Shepherd Medical Center. The House Energy and Commerce Committee — of which Walden is a member — recently approved a series of bills in Congress focused on improving treatment and recovery programs for those struggling with addiction. Oregon ranks fourth in the country for non-medical use of prescription pain relievers, and more than 100 million opioids are prescribed to Oregonians every year. Opioid abuse now makes up the majority of drug overdose deaths in the state. UmCo to host economic development summit PENDLETON — The irst Umatilla County Economic Devel- opment Summit will take place next Thursday. The summit will include a presen- tation of the results of the workforce needs study commissioned by the county in February. The presentation will be by Susan Bower of Eastern Oregon Business Source, who has been compiling survey answers, focus group responses and interviews from businesses large and small throughout Umatilla County. The goal was to determine what skills, education and certiications employers are looking for most in order to ill positions at COURTS SUITS FILED East Oregonian their companies. As those answers become clear, the county hopes to ind new ways to support workforce development in Umatilla County without duplicating efforts already being made in the school system and elsewhere. Before Bower’s presentation, county commissioner Bill Elfering, county planning director Tamra Mabbott and senior planner Bob Waldher will provide context by discussing recent economic devel- opment initiatives and activity in the county. After Bower’s presentation of the workforce needs study, the county plans to engage the summit’s attendees in a “Where do we go from here?” roundtable discussion. The summit is scheduled for 3-5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5 at the Pendleton Convention Center. THURSDAY 11:06 a.m. - A resident of Northeast Moe Lane, Hermiston, requested contact from a Umatilla County sheriff’s deputy after he received a call from a man who told him a package had been delivered to his house and asked when he would come pick it up. The caller said the man would not give him a name, and when he called the number back a woman answered who stated no men were there and her husband was at work. 11:08 a.m. - A laptop computer and clothing were stolen from an unlocked vehicle at Car Shoppe Pro, 1598 N. Columbia St., Milton-Freewater. 12:23 p.m. - Pendleton police warned the driver of a tan vehicle who left a dog and a baby unattended outside the Salvation Army Thrift Store, 1805 S.W. Court Ave. 2:41 p.m. - Car parts were reported stolen from a storage unit at Oregon Trail Mini Storage, 81011 N. Highway 395, Hermiston. The caller said the lock was cut and her husband and son had the only keys. She requested contact from a Umatilla County sheriff’s deputy. 3:28 p.m. - A motorcyclist driving reck- lessly and speeding caught the attention of local residents, and a police oficer advised the speeder. 3:59 p.m. - Two callers reported a 20-something young man running up the street in the vicinity of Northwest 11th Street and Northwest Sjoren Lane, Hermiston, yelling and trying to jump in front of cars. 4:49 p.m. - A child brought prohibited items to Sunset Elementary and was sent home. A parent was contacted. 4:52 p.m. - A resident of Southeast Byers Avenue, Pendleton, reported a neighbor stole pain medication from her home. And at the same time, on Southwest 22nd Street, a Pendleton oficer investi- gated the reported theft of a battery charger from a shed. 5:31 p.m. - Four juveniles at the Rudy Rada Skate Park, 101 Northgate, Pendleton, smashed a cell phone and then took off running up the hill toward Blue Mountain Community College when the phone’s owner mentioned calling police. 9:43 p.m. - A resident of Jones Circle, Pendleton, reported a possible prowler to Pendleton police.
