He had lined out to irst base to end Pendleton’s second inning. “I don’t know how many times he’s done that this season — bases loaded or runners at second and third with two outs and just smokes it at somebody,” Pendleton coach T.J. Haguewood said. “He’s used to that so we kind of razz him a little bit about try not hitting it at somebody. “He’s one of those hitters that he doesn’t let anything affect him, positively or negatively.” Each team scored in its Staff photo by E.J. Harris PENDLETON: Richards strikes out 10 Continued from 1B together in the high-pressure game. “There’s a big difference being 4-2 and 3-3 and now this keeps us with two wins against The Dalles and Hood River,” Cary said. “This was a very big win ... we came in and played very solid defense, the pitching was there, and the hitting was there when we needed it.” Richards got the start at pitcher for Pendleton and had one of her strongest starts of the season, throwing seven innings with 10 strikeouts and allowing just one hit and four walks. The Riverhawks (13-7, 2-4) never had a runner advance past second base in the game. “(Lauren’s) been throwing well and she did it again tonight,” Cary said of Rich- ards. “She hits her spots, has a great knack of changing her speeds and she’s just a great competitor.” Her only spot of trouble came in the fourth inning as she issued back-to-back walks with one out to end a streak of eight straight batters retired in the game. Richards said she could feel herself losing her edge with some pitches. “I think I was getting a little lazy with some pitches, which I can’t do,” she said. But she was bailed out by her defense as she induced a hard line drive to center ield that was caught by Alexis Morrison, who then ired the ball to second base to catch the base runner off the bag for an inning-ending double play. But as locked-in as Richards was, so was the Riverhawk’s pitcher Maddy Bradford through the irst three frames. Bradford had allowed two runs on just one hit through that span, with the lone blemishes being three errors from her defense leading to the two runs. But things changed in the fourth inning as Pendleton strung together four hits and three runs to open up a 5-0 cushion for Richards on the mound. “I loved seeing that from the team,” Richards said. “We had been in a little slump, so it was nice to break out of that a little. I know our team will always come together and get it done when we need it.” The scoring started as Kalan McGlothan crushed a 1-1 fastball over the fence in left-center ield for a two-run home run just two batters into the fourth inning. McGlothan said she knew what to expect from the pitcher in the at-bat. “My irst at-bat I was looking for an inside pitch and she threw me outside, so the second time I was thinking outside and she threw me a perfect pitch,” she said. “I knew I hit it hard, but I didn’t think I got it (for a home run) so I just started running.” The Buckaroos loaded the bases with back-to-back singles from Madi Parker and Tatum Fell and then a walk by Alexis Morrison, and then pushed across the third run of the inning when Richards drew the bases-loaded walk. Morrison was responsible for the sixth and inal Pendleton run as she blasted a no-doubt home run to center ield in the sixth inning. The Buckaroos will now prepare for a doubleheader with rival Hermiston with irst place on the line. Both the Buckaroos and Bulldogs are tied with 4-2 records in the CRC, which creates an even bigger rivalry match-up — something the Buckaroos are excited for. “We’re so ready for it,” Richards said. “We need to keep our hitting up and keep our defense solid. PREPS: TigerScots, Rockets softball win big Continued from 2B league win over the winless Union Bobcats on Tuesday afternoon. Jimmy Patrick had one of his best outings of the season on the mound for Weston- McEwen (12-5, 3-1 SD7) as he pitched a complete game allowing just ive hits and two runs to go with six strikeouts. Patrick also added one hit at the plate with an RBI double in the sixth inning to give the TigerScots their fourth run. Weston-McEwen got its scoring started in the irst inning as Brenden Dearing scored from third base on an error by the Union second baseman, and then Vince Roff scored from third on a wild pitch for a 2-0 Tiger- Scots lead. Roff inished the game 1-2 with two runs scored. The TigerScots then scored again in the third inning when Brett Speed doubled to right ield for his only hit of the game, scoring Shaw Broncheau from third base for the 3-0 TigerScots lead. Patrick, Speed (W-M). E 3 3 PRESCOTT (WA) 11, RIVERSIDE 1 — At Prescott, Wash., the River- side Pirates dropped a tough game on the road as their losing streak reaches 13 games on Tuesday. Riverside (1-15, 0-8 EOL) scored one run in the irst inning as Wayne Killion and Derek Bingaman racked up back-to-back hits. But those would be the inal spark for the Pirates offense as Prescott held them hitless over the inal four frames. The Pirates also held the 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Prescott’s offense took advantage of some defensive miscues from the Pirates. In total, Prescott pushed across six runs in the fourth inning and ive runs in the ifth inning to invoke the 10-run rule and end the game early. Killion started the game on the mound for Riverside as well, and inished allowing eight hits six runs — none of them earned — with one strikeout over 3.2 innings. Anthony Rodelo pitched an inning in relief and gave up two hits, ive runs (one earned) and ive walks. Softball WESTON-MCEWEN 21-25, UMATILLA 0-0 (5 innings) — At Umatilla, the Weston-McEwen Tiger- Scots racked up 44 hits in 10 innings against a young Umatilla Vikings squad in Eastern Oregon League play on Tuesday. Jessica Lambert struck out 10 batters, walked zero, and gave up just two hits in the 21-0 ive-inning Game 1. Then Bailey Hillmick threw a no-hitter and struck out seven with no walks in the 25-0 ive-inning Game 2. Several TigerScots hitters had huge days at the plate and Lambert and Charmayne Bennett hit home runs, but Weston-McEwen (11-4, 8-2 EOL) coach Jeff Griggs said he was really happy to see junior varsity call-up Tyree Burke go 3 for 5 with three runs and two RBI in Game 2. Although the two teams are clearly far apart in skill, Griggs said the Vikings (1-15, 0-10) impressed him. “Umatilla is an upstart program and they had a lot of young girls that are still learning the game,” he said. “And they played hard, and they’re only going to get better.” Next up for the TigerScots is a home doubleheader against Grant Union on Tuesday, May 3 starting at 3 p.m. ——— Game 1 R H E W-M 278 13 — 21 20 0 UHS 000 00 — 0 2 5 W — Je. Quinn came in to relieve starter Wyatt Morris in the sixth inning, and Morris left with two runs allowed on ive hits, two strikeouts and one walk. “The curve ball wasn’t working very well but other than that, pretty good,” Morris said of his day. “Wyatt hasn’t thrown much this year, he’s kind of had a sore arm and is just getting back into the groove,” Hague- wood said. “So he threw great for us, just started to get a little bit tired at the end.” Quinn got the irst two batters he faced in the sixth out, but then walked the next two before Russell threw out Matt Strizich stealing third. The Dalles’ seventh started with a Bailey Ortega single, followed by Quinn striking out Dylan DesRochers, John Miller singling and Hoffman lying out. Quinn then walked Colin Noonan to load the bases and was quickly behind in the count to Mathisen. Two looking strikes evened the count 2-2, and a couple fouls sandwiched a ball to bring it full. Quinn offered up a curve that Mathisen thought was surely a ball as he began to trot toward irst base before hearing the call from home plate of a third strike, which left the Riverhawks crying foul. “I thought it was a pretty good pitch, maybe a little low, but I didn’t think it was a big deal,” Quinn said. The win was Pendleton’s second in a row after opening league play on a four-game losing streak. The Bucks will try to get back to .500 in the CRC on Friday when they host Herm- iston for a doubleheader that will start at 4 p.m. “It’s a rivalry. Sexton then led off the fourth inning with his home run to inish the scoring for Hermiston. Hermiston remains in second place in the CRC standings after Tuesday one game ahead of both The Dalles and Pendleton. Softball HERMISTON 7, HOOD RIVER 5 — At Hood River, the Hermiston Bulldogs kept their surprise season going in the right direction as they defeated the Hood River Eagles to stay atop the CRC standings. Hermiston (13-7, 4-2 CRC) never trailed in the game, and led by as much as 6-1 in the sixth inning before the Eagles staged a comeback later in the game. The Bulldogs got the scoring started in the fourth inning as back-to-back hits from Becca Engelbrecht and Ellery Jones had runners at irst and third with nobody out. Engelbrecht stole home on a ball that got by the catcher to score the irst run a few pitches later, and then a double by Sydney Stefani scored Jones to give Herm- iston the early 2-0 lead. They added on in the sixth inning when Julissa Alma- guer doubled to push across Jones for a run, followed by RBI hits from Amanda Barron and Kylie Hinkley helped push the lead to 6-1. Almaguer was the top performer for Hermiston as she inished the game 3-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs, as well as picking up the win on the mound. The soph- omore threw a complete game allowing 11 hits, ive runs and two walks with three strikeouts. Stefani also had a strong day on offense as she inished 2-4 with a run scored and a pair of RBIs. Eight of the nine Hermiston batters recorded a hit in the game, with Kirsten Miller being the lone player to go hitless. Hermiston now moves on to a big doubleheader against Pendleton on Friday afternoon. Both teams are currently tied for irst in the CRC with 4-2 records, which makes the rivalry match-up even more interesting. PILOT ROCK 13, HEPPNER 0 (5 innings) — At Heppner, Rebekka Holman threw a two-hitter and Pilot Rock went off for eight runs in the ifth inning to bring about an early end to Tuesday’s District 6 game. Holman struck out ive and walked one, and had strong support from an offense that churned out 13 hits. Kayla Deist, Rhyanne Oates and Bekah Roe hit consecutive singles to lead off the Rockets (13-2, 5-1 SD6) in the third inning and Sara Weinke and Holman also added singles to the four-run rally that gave the Rockets their irst lead. Morgan Correa broke up Holman’s no-hitter with a double in the fourth inning for Heppner (3-11, 0-6).
