SUNDAY 8:05 a.m. - An aggressive pit bull dog got off its chain from a house on the 900 block of South Main Street, Pendleton and tried to bite someone getting into a car. 8:47 a.m. - Pilot Rock police received a report that an iPad someone stole a few months ago from the Pilot Rock Elementary School could be at a home on the 200 block of Southwest 28th Drive. 1:32 p.m. - A Milton-Freewater resident reported her daughter’s iPhone 5 stolen while the girl was riding the bus. 2:51 p.m. - A school bus driver reported a 20-something male wearing all black pointed “some sort of gun” at the buses going by on Tutuilla Road near Southwest 18th Street, Pendleton. 2:29 p.m. - Five children ran from their house to a neighbor’s on Southeast Seventh Street, Pendleton, when an intoxicated male at their home refused to leave. 7:49 p.m. - A man at Shadeview Mobile Home & RV Park, 1437 S.W. 37th St., Pendleton, told police his wife assaulted him. SATURDAY 3:29 a.m. - A 9-1-1 caller reported a male destroyed property and tried to ¿ght bouncers at Crabby’s Underground Saloon, 220 S.W. First St., Pendleton. 9:50 a.m. - A Pilot Rock man reported his tent missing from his back yard on Southwest Birch Place and said his wife has been having problems with the neighbors behind him. 12:12 p.m. - A caller asked Pendleton police if it was legal for an antique and arts store on Main Street to block access to street parking, which forced elderly people to park further away. 1:27 p.m. - Pendleton residents on the 800 block of Southeast Third Street took photos of their neighbor working in the yard due to a dispute over property lines. 6:26 p.m. - An Echo man on East Gerome Street reported someone stole his ¿shing pole. 8:05 p.m. - A woman living outside Milton-Freewater reported she allowed a male to assist her with her groceries and now she was concerned he may come back and burglarize the house. 10:58 p.m. - Umatilla police took a report that an ex-employee of the Riverside Sports Bar & Lounge, 1501 Sixth St., keyed two cars the previous night. 11:15 p.m. - A caller asked Pendleton police to quiet down the noise and music coming from 40 Taps, 337 S.W. Emigrant Ave., Pendleton. 11:39 p.m. - Pendleton police received information about a local offender in a black Ford Focus who could be casing houses to burglarize. 12:16 a.m. - A person waved down a Pend- leton police sergeant about a possible ¿ght at the Pendleton Round-Up Grounds on the 1200 block of Southwest Court Avenue. 8:22 a.m. - The Morrow County Sheriff’s 2f¿ce received a report of a man wearing black laying in the road just west of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 78922 Olson Road, Boardman. Sheriff’s deputies were unable to ¿nd the man. 8:27 a.m. - A male banged on the doors of a home at Riverside Mobile Home Estates, 2712 N.E.. Riverside Ave., Pendleton, sliced the tires of the woman living there and took off in a taxi. 9:48 a.m. - An Athena man reported someone broke into his vehicle on East Jefferson Street and stole $1.000 cash from the glove box. Another Athena man at 10:24 a.m. reported he also was the victim of a car break-in on East Darwin Street, and the culprit got away with two pocket knives, a duffel bag with snow boarding pants, raincoat and sweatpants. 3:58 p.m. - A woman on West Fourth Road, Irrigon, reported a pit bull dog jumped into the back of her vehicle and attacked her dog. The caller said they separated the dogs, and the pit bull became friendly. She requested contact from the Morrow County Sheriff’s Of¿ce. 4:09 p.m. - Three children ran on the roof at Washington Elementary School, 1205 S.E. Byers Ave., Pendleton. 4:45 p.m. - A semi driver westbound on Interstate 84 near Boardman reported another semi driver harassed him on the freeway. At 6:25 p.m., another caller said a white sedan sped and tailgated him in the same area. And a third caller at 7:09 complained two empty log trucks and a semi were “weaving and playing cat and mouse” while speeding, also in the same vicinity. The Morrow County Sheriff’s Of¿ce noted the complaints. 7:46 p.m. - A man told the Morrow County Sheriff’s Of¿ce he went to retrieve a vehicle at a storage unit near Southeast 14th Street, Irrigon, and his wife had “knocked the windows out of everything,” including the pickup and a camper. 8:54 p.m. - While a man was outside on Southeast Second Street, Pendleton, he told police he saw a silver mini van pull up, and children and a female tried to get out, and the male driver would not allow the children out. The driver then tried to turn the van around, and the female tried to run after it and yelled “gun.” The caller law saw them headed toward a highway. ARREST, CITATIONS Saturday •An Oregon State Police trooper at about 1:30 a.m. was northbound on Lee Street Grade, Pendleton, when he saw a black Chrysler Sebring parked in the road. The trooper hit his lights, approached the car and saw a naked couple in the back seat. He told them to dress. The trooper talked to Taylor Catherine Burke, 22, of Pendleton, who said she was the driver and had stopped there about 15 minutes earlier. The trooper noted the “smell of alcoholic beverage on her breath” and the “multiple empty beer cans in the back seat.” She also showed signs of impairment during a sobriety test. The trooper arrested her for driving under the inÀuence of intoxicants, and at the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton, she took a breath test that showed a blood alcohol level of .13 percent, more than the .08 percent legal limit. •Pendleton police arrested Steven Vincent Anderson, 33, of Pendleton, on a felony warrant for failure to appear and four counts of recklessly endangering after a woman at 1:05 p.m. reported she was driving when Anderson grabbed the steering wheel and made her drive up on the curb with children inside the vehicle at First Church of God, 712 S.W. 27th St., Pendleton. •Oregon State Police arrested Walter McBride Roberts III, 23, of Pendleton, for driving under the inÀuence of intoxicants, reckless driving, two counts of recklessly endangering and on two misdemeanor warrants for failure to appear. Sunday •An Oregon State Police trooper caught some crafty marijuana users. The trooper at about 12:11 a.m. was on Highway 339 near Stateline Road when a gray Toyota Corolla drove up behind and passed the trooper at 56 mph in a 40 mph zone. The of¿cer stopped the car and had the driver, Hector Gonzalez, 26, of Walla Walla, take a sobriety test, which he failed. The trooper arrested him for duii - controlled substance. The passenger also ended up under arrest. Roger DeForest Phillips, 27, of Walla Walla, had a warrant in Umatilla County for skipping out an a court appearance for traf¿c crimes, The troopers also searched the car and found marijuana and an apple “that was converted into a marijuana pipe.” The driver ended up walking away with a citation, but police put the passenger into the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton. •Morrow County Sheriff’s Of¿ce arrested Eduardo Garcia Martinez, 26, address not provided, for duii. •An employee of Circle K, 335 S.E. Court Ave., Pendleton, called police at 4:45 a.m. because a man in the store stole his walking staff, then stayed and caused a verbal disturbance. Police arrived and arrested Dustin Patrick Semler, 33, of Pendleton for ¿rst-degree trespass, third-degree theft and felon in possession of a weapon. MISSION Speaker series highlights Oregon’s Chinese history By TAMMY MALGESINI East Oregonian The Oregon Historical Society is sponsoring programs across the state highlighting the impact of the Chinese American immigration in the mid-19th century. From building infrastruc- ture through the railroad and mining industries, establishing restaurants and laundry businesses to initi- ating advancements in phar- maceutical care, the stories of Chinese Americans reach across the state. R. Gregory Nokes will present “Chinese in Eastern Oregon: The Forgotten Population” Saturday, April 30 at 1 p.m. at Tamástslikt Cultural Institute, located near Wildhorse Resort & Casino. After retiring from a 40-year journalism career, Nokes embarked on a second career as a historian, lecturer and author. During an illustrated presentation, Nokes will discuss the history of Chinese immigration to mining and railroad communities throughout Eastern Oregon. Contributed by the Oregon Historical Society R. Gregory Nokes will present “Chinese in Eastern Oregon: The Forgotten Population” as part of the The Chinese Oregon Speaker Series April 30 at Tamástslikt Cultural Institute. He’ll talk about how they built thriving communities and why they disappeared. Nokes also will share stories of violence against the Chinese, including the 1887 Hells Canyon massacre. The story came to light when a Wallowa County clerk discovered missing records in a safe more than 100 years after the deaths of nearly three dozen Chinese gold miners. Nokes, working for The Oregonian at the time, wrote an article about the discovery in 1995. “It was a mystery and made a good news story,” he said in a 2009 article in the East Oregonian. With his interest in the story piqued, Nokes pursued additional information. He followed up with a 2006 article for the Oregon Histor- ical Quarterly. In 2009, he released “Massacred for Gold: The Chinese in Hells Canyon,” a 208-page book about the incident and ensuing cover-up. The next speaker in the series to visit Tamástslikt will be Helen L. Ying. She will speak about “The Untold Story: Chinese American History in Oregon” Saturday, May 21 at 1 p.m. Currently on display at the Oregon Historical Society is a pair of ground- breaking exhibits about local and national Chinese history.
