Klamath dams agreement includes protections for farmers
SACRAMENTO, Calif.
(AP) — Agreements to
remove dams along the
Klamath River set to be
signed on Wednesday seek
to ensure that farmers and
ranchers won’t have to pay
higher prices for water.
Tearing down the dams
will allow endangered salmon
and steelhead to return to
parts of the river they have
been unable to reach for
nearly a century. The agree-
ments seek to protect upriver
irrigators from higher costs or
reduced water supply because
of measures needed protect

short, however, of imple-
menting a comprehensive
settlement that farmers, tribes
and conservation groups
worked out with state and

also restored tribal lands and

a piecemeal approach. They
will bypass Congress and
instead seek permission from
the Federal Energy Regula-
tory Commission to remove
four hydroelectric dams,

and hurt water quality. They’ll
also seek to prevent negative
impacts on farmers and other
irrigators.
Taking dams off the table
could make it more politically
feasible for Congress to
approve the water rights and
tribal lands agreements.
Meanwhile, tribes and
some conservation groups are
celebrating the progress on
removing dams.

at the dam every year. So
they’ll start going back right
away.”
Not everyone is cele-
brating. Dam removal is a
major improvement, but the
guarantees for farmers and
ranchers don’t belong in the
agreement, said Jim McCa-
rthy of the conservation group
WaterWatch.
“There’s a bunch of little
sweetheart deals that the
irrigators want to maintain,
and they’re trying to caboose
it on this dam-removal train,”
McCarthy said.
