RECORDS Friday, April 1, 2016 East Oregonian PUBLIC SAFETY LOG WEDNESDAY 10:16 a.m. - A Hermiston resident reported his son stole a credit card out of his wife’s purse and used it. 12:51 a.m. - A woman called 9-1-1 and Pendleton police after a man refused to leave and was violent at Hailey Place Apartments on the 600 block of Southwest Hailey Avenue. 7:58 a.m. - Cummins Northwest, 223 S.W. 23rd St., Pendleton, had a burglary, a caller reported, and employees ZHQWRXWVLGHWKHVWRUHWRZDLWIRUDQRI¿FHU 8:26 a.m. - A Pendleton resident on Southwest 10th Street reported a glass jar containing some change was in the front yard. This could be the tip jar a thief stole the day before from Big John’s Hometown Pizza, 225 S.W. Ninth St., Pendleton. 8:35 — Truck drivers hauling waste onion product on East Walls Road, Hermiston, are not tarping their trailers, a caller stated, adding this is an ongoing problem. 9:40 a.m. - A man reported the theft of his green 2003 Polaris side-by-side from about halfway up Highway 207 near Porcupine Lane, Heppner. 11:22 a.m. - A man punched a woman in the stomach and face and then threw her to the ground at Southeast Eighth Street and Byers Avenue, Pendleton. A caller reported the man was in his 40s, had long hair and wore a green sweater. 1:49 p.m. - A 9-1-1 caller reported a local offender came to the fence line on property on Buffalo Lane, Hermiston, and threatened assault, then left. 2:33 p.m. - A Pendleton ambulance responded to Southwest 43rd Street for a woman who may have broken her left hip. 2:48 p.m. - Pendleton police received a report of illegal sewage dumping on Southwest Second Street. 3:15 p.m. - An Irrigon father reported someone in a black Chevrolet Monte Carlo followed his daughter from high school to home and turned around and left. 3:36 p.m. - A concerned resident reported two males were ¿JKWLQJZLWKDGRJLQVLGHDYDQSDUNHGDW%DQQHU%DQNLQ Hermiston. The dog was kicked out of the van. 3:46 p.m. - Concerned Hermiston residents reported a group of people wearing safety glasses and safety vests with “STATE” on the back were taking photos of houses. 5 p.m. - A man reported he saw two wolves in the morning LQWKHDUHDRI%DUWOH\5RDG6WDQ¿HOG 5:11 p.m. - A dog owner told Pendleton police two pit bull dogs at large attacked her dogs at Grecian Heights Park, 1910 S.W. Athens Ave. She said she did not think she needed to take her dogs to a veterinarian and she would wait LQKHUYHKLFOHDWWKHSDUNIRURI¿FHUV SP7KH0RUURZ&RXQW\6KHULII¶V2I¿FHUHFHLYHG a call about an Irrigon man that a neighbor said was “out of control again.” The caller said the man walked around outside with a baseball bat a couple of hours earlier, fearful someone was trying to get him, but now he was inside his residence and was not causing a problem. 9:08 p.m. - Pendleton police responded to reports of two men on and near Highway 11 on the outskirts of the city. One caller said one man was staggering and the other was crawling across the highway. Police ended up arresting a 39-year-old man in a parole violation warrant. 11:44 p.m. - Hermiston Fire responded to a large natural FRYHU¿UHHDVWRIWKH*UDLJ5RDGDQG+LJKZD\LQWHU- FKDQJH7KH¿UHZDVH[WLQJXLVKHG ARRESTS, CITATIONS •Milton-Freewater police arrested Jim Doyle Webb, 46, of Milton-Freewater, for possession of methamphetamine and a parole violation. •Hermiston police arrested Shane Verhey Springer, 27, of Hermiston, for possession of methamphetamine and on two warrants for failure to appear. •Hermiston police arrested Tosha Renee McLeod, 46, of Hermiston, for possession of methamphetamine and on a warrant for failure to appear. •Oregon State Police arrested Christopher Allen Cooley, 33, of Hermiston, for trespassing and possession of methamphetamine. SCHOLARSHIPS Umatilla teacher receives Colonial Williamsburg scholarship UMATILLA — A Umatilla high school teacher has received a scholarship to bring Colo- nial Williamsburg to his students. Chris Early, English Language Learners (ELL) and social studies teacher at Umatilla High School, was awarded a scholarship to attend the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute, a six-day interdisciplinary course where teachers exchange ideas with historians, meet character interpreters and examine interactive WHDFKLQJWHFKQLTXHV Early was inspired to apply for the program because of his passion for American government. “I have long been fasci- nated how our Constitution has led to expanding oppor- tunities for more and more of our citizens over time,” Early said. “I am excited to be learning more about the time and place from which many of the ideas in our Constitution came.” The high school sessions for the Teacher Institute study civics through the lens of Amer- ican history. Teachers will made connections to past and preset-day issues during visits to Jamestown, Williamsburg and Rich- mond, Va. “This is an exciting opportunity for one of our high school teachers to gain teaching strategies and interactive methods to make history more exciting for students in the Umatilla School District,” Heidi Sipe, Umatilla School District superintendent, said. “We are pleased that Chris was chosen and look forward to him sharing what he learns.” HERMISTON Rotary offers service club option East Oregonian Young men and women between the ages of 18-30 are invited to join a community Rotaract Club. The Hermiston Rotary Club is looking to sponsor the group, which bring together adults to take action in their community, develop leadership and professional skills, and have fun. Dennis is survived by his wife, Krista; daughters Brenda, Dawn, Jodee and Ashlee; grandchil- dren Andrea, Adam, Ashlyn, Kaylee and Cody; brothers Fred and Pius; and his two best friends, Charlee and Rockee. He is preceded in death by his son Kristo- Horning pher, sister Dora, and brother George. Dennis was born on November 6, 1945, in Hermiston, Ore., to Adam and Regina (Gisinger) Horning. He graduated from Hermiston High School in 1963 and studied business at Kinman Business College in Spokane, Wash. He married Krista Sue Loftus on October 20, 1973, in Hermiston. Dennis managed grocery VWRUHVWKURXJKRXWWKH3DFL¿F Northwest, at times running his own store. Dennis was accomplished at baseball and remained passionate about the sport throughout his life. He was a hard- working individual and a dedicated husband and father. He strove to ensure that his family was loved and taken care of. He was an amazing grandfa- ther and enjoyed spending time with all of his grandchil- dren. Brenda Joyce Terrell Pendleton December 31, 1942-March 27, 2016 Brenda Joyce Terrell, 73, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2016, at her home in Pendleton. Brenda was born on December 31, 1942, in Lindsay, California, to Selba Dean and Mae Emily Stevenson. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, playing games on the computer, spending time Terrell with her grand- children, gardening and football. We will miss her cooking. She is rejoicing in heaven. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 2 at 3:00 p.m. in the Pend- leton Seventh-day Adventist Church, with burial to be held on Monday, April 4 at 10:00 a.m. in Olney Cemetery. Gary was born March 9, 1954, in San Francisco, California, to Porter Ernest and Marlene (Anderson) Porter. He spent most of his childhood in Pendleton and his teenage years at the family ranch in Silver Lake, Oregon, during the summers. He attended Harris Jr. Academy, Laurel- wood Academy and Walla Walla Valley Academy. He went to Blue Mt. Community College and graduated from Walla Walla College in 1978. He worked for Harris Pine until December of 1986. He married Kathy Clayton in 1974. They had two daugh- ters, Shelli and Melissa; later Gary and Kathy divorced.
