Of course, most Pilot Rock Elementary School graduates didn’t take part in the Persian Gulf war against Iraq. Deno did. Deno, wearing his Navy dress blues, was greeted by applause, music and ques- tions. Many questions. Deno said he wasn’t surprised about the attention. While stationed on Diego Garcia Island, about 3,000 miles from Iraq, he received 17 letters from students in Virginia Carnes’ fourth-grade class. All the letters, which arrived around Valentines Day, wished him well and asked what he was doing and what it was like. “It was a big morale boost to get those letters,” he told the students. “I shared the letters with 200-250 people.
