Lyle Earlley reported capture of Gary Lee Cowgill, 25, after he hid in a car in the Pay Less parking lot after police said he approached a cache of nearly 30 cartons of cigarettes stolen the previous night from Gillanders & Burroughs, 504 SE 3rd St. Earlley said all but one carton of those stolen were recovered. 25 Years Ago From the East Oregonian March 3, 1991 President Bush today named Sister Mary Florita Springer of Pendleton one of his “points of light” for her work among the elderly on the Umatilla Indian reservation. Springer, 81, is a nun assigned to St. Anthony Hospital. She taught for 15 years at St. Andrews Indian School on the reservation. Upon retirement, Springer decided to return to the reservation to ensure the elderly resi- dents there received friendship and care, the White House release said. Working through the Senior Companion Volunteer Program, Springer regularly visits about 30 homebound seniors on the reservation, helping them with chores and offering reading material. She also picks up hot meals at the reservation Senior Center and takes them to seniors unable to prepare their own meals.
