May 28, 1996-February 19, 2016 Gordon Thomas O’Brien, 93, of Heppner died Wednesday, February 24, 2016, at his home on Little Buttercreek. A memorial graveside service will be held Saturday, March 5, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the Heppner Masonic Cemetery. A recep- tion will follow at the Heppner Elks Lodge. He was born November 18, 1922, at the home of Mrs. Green, a Heppner midwife. Gordon was the son of Thomas and Lucybella Corrigall O’Brien. He attended the Pine City School O’Brien for 11 years, then graduated from Heppner High School in 1940. He attended Oregon State University, majoring in agriculture business. Due to the loss of an eye he was unable to join the mili- tary. Following World War II he formed a partnership with his brothers. Gordon raised cattle, wheat and hay. In 1955 he married Helen Shafer Katina Perkins Wallowa June 25, 1971-February 26, 2016 Katina Perkins, 44, of Wallowa, Oregon, passed away in her home surrounded by her loved ones on February 26, 2016. Katina was born in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, on June 25, 1971. An informal Celebration of Life will be held at Evans Park in Wallowa, Oregon, on Saturday, March 5th, 2016, at SP+HU¿QDOZRUGVWR her family and friends were the following: “Just promise me one thing. Folklife announces apprenticeship EUGENE — The Oregon Folklife Network is accepting applications for its Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program for 2016. The program honors excellent master traditional artists and culture keepers to apply with apprentices from their own communities, tribes, cultural, religious or occupational group for $3,000 stipends. The stipend pays masters to pass on their knowledge, skills and expertise to an apprentice of great promise to help ensure carrying on Oregon’s traditions. Oregon’s many traditional folk arts also include southeast Asian dancing, Norwegian cooking and baking, logger poetry, American Indian basket weaving, old time ¿GGOLQJ $IULFDQ$PHULFDQ gospel singing, saddle making and more. The OFN encourages applications from Oregonians engaged in these kinds of living cultural traditions emerging from a particular heritage or tribe. The program does not fund historic re-enactments, do-it- yourself revival crafts or those who practice traditions that are not part of their own cultural heritage.
