RECORDS Friday, February 26, 2016 East Oregonian PUBLIC SAFETY LOG WEDNESDAY 7:44 a.m. - A man reported the theft of his 1997 Honda Civic from the 600 block of Pierce Street, Milton-Freewater. 8:41 a.m. - A caller told Pendleton police her mother will not Jive her her Social SecXrit\ card or birth certi¿cate. 9:33 a.m. - A Hermiston man reported someone stole and deposited his father-in-law’s retirement check. 11:16 a.m. - A man swore and used abusive language at an employee at Comfort Inn & Suites, 77514 Highway 207, Hermiston, during a dispute about a mess near the man’s black Honda car. 11:20 a.m. - Staff at the Pendleton Public Library, 502 S.W. 'orion Ave., reported ¿nding a wallet, an iPhone and identi¿ca- tion at the library, all from different people. 2 p.m. - A Pendleton man reported he was walking at Southwest Goodwin Avenue and Ninth Street when a Dachshund bit him and tore his pants. 2:33 p.m. - 7he 8matilla County Sheriff’s 2f¿ce took a report of a dog that killed chickens and ducks in a neighborhood on Walla Walla River Road, Milton-Freewater, and now was killing and eating a chicken by Grove Elementary School, 129 S.E. 15th St., Milton-Freewater. 2:57 p.m. - Pendleton police received a report of a guy riding a moped or motorcycle on the ¿eld and track by Pendleton High School. The rider was gone before police arrived. 2:58 p.m. - A staggering man bleeding from his lip shouted at cars as they drove along Umatilla River Road at the bridge by Umatilla. Law enforcement was not able to ¿nd the man. 3:24 p.m. - Juveniles walked on the outside of the bridge on Northwest 10th Street, Pendleton. 3:51 p.m. - The Umatilla County Sheriff’s 2f¿ce received a report of horse neglect on Mission Road next to Elizabethan Manor, Pendleton. 3:56 p.m. - Pendleton police received a report of a cat in a tree for the past two-and-half days on South Main Street. 4:02 p.m. - A man with a metal detector and shovel dug holes at Til Taylor Park, Pendleton. 4:17 p.m. - A owner of Pendleton Pupcakes, 148 S. Main St., wanted to speak to an of¿cer about dog feces in front of her business. 5:29 p.m. - A dog barking all day on Southwest Isaac Avenue, Pendleton, prompted a caller to ask about signing a complaint. 7:22 p.m. - And a Stan¿eld woman told police her dog got into the neighbors’ yard on Willow Drive, but she was too afraid to go ask them if she can retrieve her dog. 8:04 p.m. - A silver Honda raced another silver car along Southwest Dorion Avenue, cut off people and almost hit cars near Seventh Street. Police did not ¿nd the racers. SCHOLARSHIPS Hermiston Elks award scholarships HERMISTON — The Hermiston Elks recently awarded their 2016 Most Valuable Student scholarships. The contest is held every year and requires students to submit a brochure that is graded on academics, leadership, community involvement and employment. Students from Boardman, Irrigon, Umatilla, Hermiston, Stan¿eld and Echo schools are eligible to apply. First place boy was Colton Seelye of Irrigon High School, who will receive an $800 scholarship. First place girl was Gabriela Lemus-Macias of Umatilla High School, also receiving $800. Second place girl was Jailin Colula, also of UHS, who will receive $400. The Elks National Foundation Inc. awards more than $4 million in scholarships every year. Funds for the local contest are generated by the local lodge membership. OBITUARIES Gordon Thomas O’Brien Antoinette ‘Toni’ DeFriez Skinner Heppner November 18, 1922-February 24, 2016 Hermiston April 25, 1966-February 20, 2016 Gordon Thomas O’Brien, 93, Heppner, Oregon, passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2016. Gordon was born November 18, 1922, to Lucy Bella (Corrigall) and Thomas O’Brien on the Corrigall Sheep ranch near Echo, Oregon. In 1923 his parents purchased a ranch on Little Butter Creek. His family ran 3,000 head of sheep and Gordon won many blue ribbons with his prize sheep. Gordon grew up on the family ranch with his brothers and sisters and O’Brien traveled nine miles to the Pine City country three-room school house on Butter Creek where he went to school for 11 years and was elected student body president. He ¿nished his last year of school in Heppner where he boarded, played football and graduated from Heppner High School in 1939. Gordon went to Oregon State College for ¿ve terms where he joined the Sigma Pi fraternity and majored in agriculture business. Gordon’s education was interrupted when the war came in 1941 and he was needed on the ranch. After the sheep market crashed, Gordon went to work for neighboring ranches and in logging. In 1949 Gordon with two of his brothers, Pat and Malcolm, formed O’Brien Bros. partnership and leased their mother’s ranch. On October 21, 1955, in Skamania, Washington, Gordon married Helen Belsma, daughter of Erma and David Shafer, a wheat farming family from the Pendleton area. The couple purchased the brothers’ shares of the business and remodeled the farmhouse and made Little Butter Creek their home, raising wheat, hay, cattle, and raising their daughter, Ronnie. Gordon and Helen were a strong husband and wife team and expanded their cattle business and the two of them were honored with the award of Morrow County Livestock Growers of the Year in 1980. They summered their cattle on several mountain ranches in Umatilla, Grant and Union counties and made many lasting friendships in the business. In 1985 they retired their thousand-acre wheat growing operation into the CRP program. After his wife’s death in 1990 he continued the hay and cattle business and remained on the ranch until 2016. In later years he enjoyed traveling and reuniting with relatives in Ireland. Gordon was grand marshal of the annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration in Heppner and a member of the Heppner Elks Lodge and Cattlemen’s Association. Gordon is survived by his daughter, Ronnie Belsma of Pendleton, Oregon, and many nieces and nephews. Gordon was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, sisters Isabella Davis and Katherine Voge, and brothers James O’Brien, Malcolm O’Brien, and Pat O’Brien. Antoinette “Toni” DeFriez Skinner, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, died February 20, 2016, in Hermiston, Oregon, at the age of 49 years. She was born on April 25, 1966, in Provo, Utah, to Stanley C. DeFriez and Joan Davis DeFriez. Toni is survived by her mother and her siblings; her husband Kevin M. Skinner; and their children: Wood (Jessica), Conrad, Jace and Jancee Skinner. She was preceded in death by her father. Toni grew up Skinner in Heber City, Utah, but called Hermiston, Oregon, home for over 23 years. She was the senior class president at Wasatch High School in 1984, and graduated from Utah State University in 1998 in marketing and ¿nance. Toni ful¿lled her childhood dream by grad- uating with a Doctorate in Jurisprudence from Brigham Young University (BYU Law Temple) in 1991. Then the best thing happened. She met a tall skinny cowboy from a small town on a blind date. They dated for a short time and then married in the Salt Lake Temple. She was admitted to the Utah and Oregon Bar Association. Toni was a devoted wife and mother, always putting her family before herself. She was a trusted friend and con¿dant always willing to bear others’ burdens. Toni was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; she faithfully ful¿lled many church callings. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 850 S.W. 11th St., Hermiston, Oregon.
