SCHOLARSHIPS OES announces scholarship PENDLETON — The Oregon East Symphony has announced its 2016 scholarship. The symphony will award a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior from Pendleton or the surrounding area. The scholarship will be awarded to the recipient at the season ¿nale concert on April 23. MILTON-FREEWATER Mac-Hi to honor second class of inductees East Oregonian A team and seven individuals are included as the second year of inductees into the McLoughlin High School Hall of Fame. The inductees will be recognized during A Toast to Talent Saturday, March 5 from 6-9 p.m. at the Milton-Freewater Community Building, 109 N.E. Fifth St. Also serving as a fundraiser, the event includes a silent auction. Childcare is available at Mac-Hi. Tickets are $25 and include hors d’ oeuvres, one commemorative glass, one complimentary beverage, dessert and entertainment provided by Mac-Hi’s Crimson & Black choir. They can be purchased at the high school. The inductees and some of their accomplishments include: John Turbyne, a longtime Mac-Hi principal until retiring in 1978, was an of¿cer and veteran of :orld :ar II. As an Elks Lodge 2146 member, Turbyne was a crucial link in the development of Camp Meadowood Springs, received the Oregon Elk of the Year Award in 1988 and was elected to the Elks Hall of Fame in 1994. Elsie Kepler began her four-decade career at Mac-Hi in 1923 as an English and Latin teacher. She was also a class advisor, counselor and dean of girls. During :orld :ar II she was moved to the principal position before returning to the classroom. In addition to the subjects she taught, her students learned a sense of responsibility and obedience from the longtime educator. Dr. Charles Lawrence (Larry) Lutcher, the Mac-Hi class of 1953 student body president, earned his medical doctorate from :ashington Contributed graphic The McLoughlin High School Hall of Fame will honor new inductees during A Toast to Talent Saturday, March 5 at the Milton-Freewater Community Building. University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 1961. He was drafted for the Vietnam :ar and served until 1970. At the Medical College of Georgia, Lutcher spearhead the state’s ¿rst diag- nostic coagulation laboratory and was instrumental in the development of its bone marrow transplant program. William Michael “Mick” Gillette, a 1959 Mac-Hi graduate, also graduated cum laude from :hitman College in 1963. He received a doctorate degree from Harvard Law School in 1966. Over the course of his career, Gillette served in several government positions and was appointed to the Oregon Supreme Court in 1986, serving until December 2010. Merle Calvin Hufford, a 1928 Mac-Hi graduate, was a three-sport athlete who went on to compete in foot- ball and track at the University of :ash- ington. He was named an All-American halfback in 1929, but turned down an opportunity to play professional football to focus on work and family. He later served one term in the :ashington State House of Representatives. Waldron “Wally” Wedin, a 33-year Mac-Hi educator, graduated from Oregon State University. During his tenure as a vocational agriculture teacher, his students earned 50 State Farmer degrees, eight were state of¿- cers and ¿ve earned American Farmer degrees. :edin was recognized for his service by Gov. Robert Straub and was named Man of the Year in 1969 and Agriculturalist of the Year in 1995 by the Milton-Freewater Chamber of Commerce. R.A. “Andy” Millar, a 1964 Mac-Hi graduate, received a doctorate degree in 1987 from Gonzaga School of Law. Millar served in the Vietnam :ar as a military policeman with the U.S. Army. He was the American Legion Judge Advocate from 1997-2014 and became the Department of Oregon American Legion Commander. He was Oregon’s Legionnaire of the Year in 2006 and was named Milton-Freewater’s Man of the Year in 2009. The 1959 Oregon State 2A basket- ball championship team beat Newport High School 72-60 in the championship game. Under coach Russ DeBondt, the team compiled a 21-9 record.
