RECORDS Thursday, February 18, 2016 PUBLIC SAFETY LOG MONDAY 4:26 p.m. - A man reported the theft of his white 1995 Ford F150 pickup with expired Wyoming tags from Southeast Greenwood Avenue, Irrigon. 6:12 p.m. - A driver reported two cars tried to make her pull over on the westbound side of Interstate 84 near Boardman. She said one car would drive in front of her, then slow down while the second got right behind her, then they would switch positions. One car was red, older and “banged up,” and the other was blue and may have been a four-door Buick with a large mirror across the windshield. The cars pulled off at exit 168. 3olice could not ¿nd the cars. 10 p.m. - Two males tried to get into a woman’s room at the Sub Zero Motel, Irrigon. TUESDAY 7:32 a.m. - A Pendleton woman on Southwest 29th Street reported someone broke into her car during the night and stole some items. A minute later, a man over at Pendleton Square Apartments, 300 S.W. 28th 'rive, reported ¿nding a registration and receipts belonging to the woman and a stereo in front of his house. He said he was concerned someone broke into a vehicle. 8:22 a.m. - Transients in a homeless camp on Umatilla River Road and Interstate 82 moved their “junk/trash” from the embankment to a parking area near the road, a caller said, and Umatilla County’s code enforcement should do something about it. She said it “makes the community look trashy.” 8:29 a.m. - Talking about trash, a caller told Pendleton police someone dumped bags of trash, mail and a mattress at Southeast 10th Street and Goodwin Avenue. 8:50 a.m. - Someone shot through a dining room window on East Loop Road, Hermiston. The caller said the bullet was on the Àoor on his home and it may have happed during the previous evening. 8:56 a.m. - Umatilla police received complaints about the homeless camp moving back toward the city from county property. 9:33 a.m. - Burglars got away with several items from a shop on Cobb Road, Milton-Freewater. The owner reported the crime and said he would meet a Umatilla County sheriff’s deputy. 110:05 a.m. - A Stan¿eld woman reported someone stole her identity and now she has a $36,000 debt in Tennessee. 2:42 p.m. - A Umatilla woman reported a man she knows stole $980 from her and a cellphone is also missing from her house. 4:46 p.m. - A Pendleton man reported his ex-girlfriend took his gun and sold it without his permission. 5:07 p.m. - The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Of¿ce received a complaint about an owner neglecting a dog on North Townsend Road near East Theater Lane, Hermiston. The caller said the dog has been tied up all day for the past six months and it does not appear to have food or water. 5:33 p.m. - A Umatilla man told police his wife was going to call and say he hit her in the head. 6:42 p.m. - A female reported her mother kicked her out of the house in Pendleton and now she is with her sister in Athena. She said her mother now is texting her “mean things,” such as telling her she is “into drugs and heroin and swear words.” She also reported she saved the texts and would like to show them to a Umatilla County sheriff’s deputy. 9:11 p.m. - A Milton-Freewater man reported the theft of his white 2016 Toyota Camry from the 800 block of North Elizabeth Street. Buroker Marlois Ann Keeney Milton-Freewater June 10, 1932-February 11, 2016 Hermiston February 17, 1949-February 13, 2016 Arlen L. Buroker passed away February 11, 2016, due to complications from open heart surgery. Arlen was born on June 10, 1932, to parents Merrill A. and Esther (Feigner) Buroker. He grew up on the family farm on the Walla Walla River, learning from an early age the value of hard work and the love of horses. As a young boy Arlen helped harness the team of Percheron work horses and it was his job to drive the team pulling the hay wagon, even though he was so young he had to stand up to work the hand brake with both feet. He also helped his stepmother Helen (Shepherd) Buroker to milk the cows and feed and care for the hogs and sheep and chickens. Always Buroker enterprising, as a very young boy Arlen raised rabbits for meat and sold to a local restaurant. An avid and accomplished horseman his whole life, at age 9 Arlen started breaking the family Shetland ponies to ride and drive and perform various “tricks,” and soon was well known as a great hand with horses and began training horses and ponies for friends and neighbors. He was an active 4-H member with his Guernsey dairy cows. In 1946 when Arlen was 14, the family moved to a farm along Dry Creek in the Umapine area, where the Buroker family remains today. Arlen attended Tum-a-Lum grade school and graduated from McLoughlin Union High School in 1950. He was very active in FFA, earning the Better Farming Award, District Speaking Contest and many more accolades. He was chapter president, Oregon state pres- ident and received the pres- tigious National American Farmer Degree. He was also honored by the Milton-Free- water Junior Chamber of Commerce as “Outstanding Young Farmer,” winning second place in the Oregon State competition. In October 1950 he married his high school sweetheart Patsy White, eventually buying acreage adjoining the family farm in Umapine and building a house there in 1960. In 2015 Patsy and Arlen celebrated their 65th wedding anniver- sary. Arlen was very active in community service and local 4-H clubs and FFA chapters. He served on the Milton-Freewater Junior Show fair board and Umatilla County Fair board (chairman), and the Umatilla County Planning Commis- sion. He was an excellent cattleman and horseman and farmer. He was a voracious reader, always reading various trade journals to keep up on the latest trends and innovations. He loved raising and working the family beef cattle herd, especially if it could be done from the back of a horse. As a young man he enjoyed traveling to local rodeos and competing in wild cow milking, cow riding, and tie-down calf roping. After retiring Arlen and Patsy traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and loved their many adventures in their motor home, where they met many new friends. Preceded in death by his mother and father, Merrill and Esther Buroker, and son-in-law Mike Elkington. Survived by his beloved wife Patsy, daughters Lorri Wright, Merrilee Buroker and Linda Hall; son-in-law Tim Smock; grandchildren Seth Elkington (wife Sara) and Jennifer Elkington; great-grandson Charlie Elkington; sister Calista Berg (husband Larry); and stepmother Helen Buroker. A celebration of Arlen’s life will be held at a later date. COMING EVENTS THURSDAY, FEB. 18 East Oregonian Marlois Ann Keeney was born February 17, 1949, in Niangua, Missouri, to parents George William and Geneva Pauline (Reese) Cain. She died Saturday, February 13, 2016, in Hermiston, Oregon, at the age of 66 years due to heart-related health compli- cations. She graduated from Pendleton High School. She married Robert Keeney in 1989 in Hawaii and worked for the state of Hawaii for many years. Marlois was an excellent crafter of beautiful lampwork Keeney beads as well as other crafts. She was very close to her companion dog Hoku. Sadly, Hoku passed away the same evening as Marlois. She had a love for music and enjoyed playing the organ and piano. Marlois is survived by sisters Janice (Al) Smith of Keeau, Hawaii, Glenda Phillips of Umatilla, Ore., Susan (Brett) Swearingen of Pendleton, Ore., and Cindy (Mark) Hobbs of Challis, Idaho; brothers Jerry (Kay) Cain of Grand Junction, Colo., Wes (Jennie) Cain of Pendleton, Ore., Tim (Leslie) Cain of Pendleton, Ore., and Randall (Sue) Cain of Cove, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews. Marlois was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert Coonrod and Robert Keeney; parents George Cain and Geneva (Cain) Keown; brother Larry L. Cain, and infant brother Dale E. Cain. Robert ‘Bob’ Wallace Sr. Pendleton June 14, 1943-February 14, 2016 Robert (Bob) Wallace Sr. passed away February 14, 2016, in Pendleton, Oregon. He was 72 years old. He attended school in Twin Falls, Rich¿eld, Shoshone, and Bellevue, Idaho, and graduated in 1961. He served in the Navy 1962-1966 and was stationed in Guam for a portion of that time. He worked for Hertz Rent a Car in Boise while attending college after his stint in the Navy. Bob also worked for a taxi service as well as Sun Valley Travels, where he met and married Lynda Dunbar in August 1969. He was most known for ranching as he worked for several Blaine County ranches growing mainly barley for Coors and hay. He was baptized April 8, 1973, at the Jehovah’s Witness Convention in Brigham, Utah. He was a loyal servant of Jehovah for the remainder of his life. He is survived by his wife, Lynda Wallace of Pend- leton, Oregon; his six children, Joni Taft of Pendleton, Ore., Ginger Went- worth of Pend- leton, Ore., Robert Wallace Jr. of Bellevue, Idaho, Sandy Chitwood of Bellevue, Idaho, David and wife Danielle Wallace of Pendleton, Ore., and Tom Wallace of Bellevue, Idaho; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Shoemaker of Bellevue, Idaho, and Delores Rezendez of Torrington, Wyoming; two brothers, Jerry Wallace of Shoshone, Idaho, and Jim Wallace of Eckert, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews. Portland author to sign new book PENDLETON — Portland author Tom Towslee will be on hand as he signs and discusses his new book, “Paradise Girls.” Towslee, a former journalist and communications director for Sen. Ron Wyden, will share about the novel and sign copies of the book Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at Armchair Books, 39 S.W. Dorion Ave., Pendleton. The book details the experiences of freelance writer John Standard in Zihuatanejo, Mexico. Although he went there to relax, he is thrust into an investigation of the disappearance of a millionaire’s granddaughter from Portland. It is suspected that the young woman has become one of the Paradise Girls — young American girls who are kidnapped from their homes and forced into prostitution in Mexico.
