Page 2C YOUR EO NEWS East Oregonian Saturday, January 23, 2016 Armand Larive student wins poster contest Morrow County Cultural Coalition grants Charlie Clupny of the Hermiston Lions Club recently announced that Genevieve Marvin won the service club’s state Lions Peace Poster Contest. Open to students up to 13 years old, the Armand Larive Middle School eighth-grader received a framed certi¿cate, a cash prize and a color copy of the ¿ne artwork after winning the Hermiston contest. A back-to-back area winner, the presentation was made Nov. 18, and then the local club sent Marvin’s entry to the state level. Marvin’s poster will now be entered into the international contest. The winner of that contest will receive a scholarship. In addi- tion, their poster will be used as part of the Lion’s International Peace Project and will be used as the basis for a parade Àoat in the Parade of Roses in Pasadena, California. On the topic of “Share Peace,” the contest encourages students to engage in their community and to express their thoughts about peace. “Genevieve is a very artistic and kind student at Armand Larive and we will miss her as she moves to the high school next year,” said principal Stacie Roberts. The Morrow County Cultural Coalition supported by the Oregon Cultural Trust Founda- tion recently announced grant awards given in Morrow County. The projects supported for 2016 include activities in schools and the community: Obo Addy Legacy African Drumming work- shops and assemblies; Idaho Shakespeare Festival theater performances; Irrigon and Boardman elementary schools Artist in Residence; Morrow County Historical Society Chronicles; Hampstead Stage Co.; and Inland Northwest Musicians with performances in Boardman, Irrigon and Heppner. Applications for 2017 cultural based activities in Morrow County are now being accepted. Projects supported in the past have also included quilting and art groups, art displays, historical library books, cultural entertainment structures and kid’s park activities. THANK YOU 7KH$UF¿UHVXSQHZIXUQDFH A little over a year ago The Arc Umatilla County began a journey to raise over $40,000 to replace the condemned heating unit at The Arc Building. Throughout the last year an outpouring of support for this project has resulted in a new heating system for this beloved building at 215 W. Orchard Ave. Due to the installation of a new heating system this past fall, The Arc Building is now able to house the Hermiston Warming Station along with providing a place for individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities and their family members to enjoy activities and educational opportuni- ties year round. The following organizations, businesses and individuals have made a project of this magnitude a reality: The Wildhorse Foundation, Blue Mountain Community Foundation, city of Hermiston, Umatilla Electric Cooperative, AFSCME Local 835, Hermiston Eagles, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Beason’s Chuckwagon, Desert Arts Council, Mark and Kristi Smalley, Maryann Elquezabal, Jamie and James Jundt, Norman Schroth, Carol and Sheryl Poulson, Carol Clupny, Bob and Jan Schroth, Sid and Joyce Priest, Jolene Oden, everyone who supported the bowling tournament last May at Desert Lanes, the Thursday Night Bingo Players who cooked and sold dinners to bene¿t the furnace fund, Bonnie James for making all of the beautiful scarfs to sell, everyone who donated to support Kristi Smalley as a participant in the “2015 Dancing with your Hermiston Stars” event, Joe Ferretta who donated the stay at a condo for a rafÀe, everyone who bought tickets or made donations in support of the potato feed, Fence Tite Rite for donating fencing to protect the new exterior units, Bruce Heating and Air-conditioning, Inc. and Fred Carlson Jr. Electrical Contractors, Inc. who have been great to work with on this very complex heating system replace- ment project. Kristi Smalley “Heating the Arc Building” Fundraising Committee, Hermiston Historical society celebrates building purchase The Umatilla County Historical Society started the new year on a positive note. At the close of 2015, the historical society was able to complete the purchase of the building at 138 S.E. Court Ave., which houses its new Community Thrift Shop. The purchase of the historic property was made possible through the generous contributions of Tom and Patti Winn, The Collins Foundation, The Ford Family Foundation, Pendleton Foundation Trust, and Umatilla County Community and Economic Development. “The UCHS Board of Directors is very grateful to those who contributed so generously,” said Susan Badger Doyle, president of the society. “The Community Thrift Shop promises a brighter future for the community and the Umatilla County Histor- ical Society,” added Barbara Lund-Jones, historical society executive director. Light, spacious and airy, the shop offers a wide selec- tion of gently used items for home, family and personal use. Also, it’s committed to ongoing programming, offering workshops in the creative re-purposing of everyday objects, sharing ideas and inspiration. In a relatively short time, the store has become a shopping destination for many and a popular gathering place. Formerly called the Community Bargain Counter, the Community Thrift Shop moved from its location on Main Street to its new location with its new name in March 2015. All proceeds from the shop bene¿t the Umatilla County Historical Society, which also operates the Heritage Station Museum. “We’re very pleased that the shop revenues are exceeding projections,” Doyle said. The shop is managed by Eleanor Punch Lee and staffed by volunteers. Hours are Monday through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. The phone number is 541-276-7808. McKay Creek residents enjoy taste of New York Residents of McKay Creek Estates recently had a trip to New York Richie’s as part of the facility’s January theme of New York, New York. Everybody on the trip had a blast, said Noemi Wiseman, facility admin- istrator. They visited with each other while enjoying pizza and beer. Several had bright smiles on their faces as they reminisced about memories while visiting the Big Apple, Wiseman said. The group also enjoyed seeing different pictures of Marilyn Monroe, even joking that Thelma Lindner is a Monroe look- a-like. Wiseman, along with Life Enrichment Director Diane Fitzpatrick, accom- panied the residents on the outing, which also included a short visit to Wildhorse Resort & Casino. The ¿nal New York- themed activity for the month is Wednesday’s Runway Fashion Show. Shortly before Christmas, members of the Hermiston area church received baby bottles from church member June Tassie, who is a liaison with the pregnancy center. Over the course of several weeks they ¿lled the bottles with spare change. The bottles were gathered at the church Sunday, Jan. 17 as the group recognized a Sanctity of Life Day. Tassie delivered the bottles to Debbie Cissna, center director, Jan. 19. Cissna was thrilled with the donation. The money will assist with providing services to women who are facing an unplanned pregnancy, including free pregnancy tests, peer counseling and supplies.
