It was the largest meeting of its kind ever held in eastern Oregon and, as one prominent resident afterwards remarked, “It did more good than any meeting held in the history of Pendleton.” Men of every class and vocation were there, and the attentiveness of all during the two hours and more told of the impres- sive interest in the message delivered by Dr. W.D. Mc1ary and 5ev. J.E. Snyder, the two speakers. At the conclusion of the meeting probably 75 percent of those present handed in cards requesting literature upon the sex problems and many ordered books on the subject endorsed by the state society. 50 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Jan. 16-17, 1966 A Pendleton woman lay bleeding in the front seat of her smashed car for over three hours this morning less than two yards off the busy Mission Highway and not one motorist was curious enough to stop and investigate. It took a conductor in an eastbound Union Paci¿c freight train, perched high in the top of a caboose, to spot Dorothy M. Surles, 37, slumped over in the front seat. This occurred at 9:45 a.m., about three hours after school bus drivers said they noticed the wrecked car beside the highway on their morning runs. The Surles woman was taken to St. Anthony Hospital where she is being treated for possible serious injuries. 25 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Jan. 16-17, 1991 A convoy of 18-wheelers rolled away from Woodpecker Trucks of Pendleton Wednesday afternoon destined for Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, 30 miles west, the Umatilla Army Depot has increased its shipments of munitions sixfold since the Persian Gulf crisis began last August. Woody Clark, owner of Woodpecker Trucks, said a military division of the federal government purchased 14 tractors and 15 lowboy trailers, which are used in the transportation of heavy equipment. More have been ordered. The sale amounted to nearly $1 million, and Clark said the government has contracted for another 25 tractors and trailers. THIS DAY IN HISTORY Today is the 16th day of 2016.
