Branstetter Hermiston July 27, 1960-January 13, 2016 Pendleton October 16, 1929.-Jan. 12, 2016 4:18 a.m. - A resident of Tri-Harbor Apartments, Umatilla, called 9-1-1 because someone tried to get into his apartment. 7:34 a.m. - Pendleton police received a call about a person threatening to step in front of a vehicle to commit suicide. 8:27 a.m. - A caller reported someone left a vehicle in the north end of the orchard off Yellow Jacket Lane near Sunnyside. The caller said it looked like someone ransacked the interior. 11:21 a.m. - A caller told Pendleton police that people have been living in a vehicle for the past three days near the Eastern Oregon Regional Airport. 11:31 a.m. - A Pendleton man reported he was the victim of identity theft while he was incarcerated. 1:18 p.m. - An employee of Circle K, 335 S.E. Court Ave., Pendleton, reported the business has video showing a person reached over the counter and stole lottery tickets. 4:52 p.m. - The stop sign between the Pendleton Wal-Mart Supercenter and the Taco Bell faced the wrong direction. 5:59 p.m. - A Pilot Rock resident called 9-1-1 to report a trespasser — her adult son, who pounded on the door and claimed to be hungry. 7:54 p.m. - A caller from Salem told the Umatilla County Sheriff¶s Of¿ce someone stole his horse trailer from a site on East Punkin Center Road, Hermiston. ARRESTS, CITATIONS Pendleton police arrested Charles Adam Buettner, 28, no address provided, for possession of methamphetamine, second-degree trespassing and carrying a concealed weapon. HONORS EWU names winter dean’s list CHENEY, Wash. — Eastern Washington University released its winter 2015 dean’s list for the 2015-16 academic year. The following local students were among those named to the list: Heppner: Teruo Chinen; Hermiston: Katie Rongey, Nathan Lind and Robert Humphrey; Milton-Freewater: Katria Dony; Pendleton: Cassidy Clark, Kristin Mascall and Lindsey Roach. BRIEFLY Women’s choir set rehearsals PENDLETON — Sisters in Song, Pendleton’s community women’s choir, will begin rehearsing for its spring concert. All new and returning singers are invited to the weekly rehearsals, which begin Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Pendleton High School choir room, 1800 N.W. Carden Ave. Auditions are not required to join the choir. Directed by Lezlee Flagg and is accompanied by Suzi Wood, the mission of Sisters in Song is to learn and perform a variety of music, while striving for musical polish and beauty in an atmosphere of supportive and good-humored cooperation. Barbara Ann Carrera was born on July 27, 1960, in Platte, South Dakota, to parents Anton and Viola Kolb Petrak. She died on January 13, 2016, at her home in Hermiston, Oregon, at the age of 55 years. She was raised and attended school in Chamberlain, South Dakota, graduating in the class of 1978. Barbara was united in marriage to Jesus Carrera on November 28, 1980, in Chamber- lain, South Dakota, and they moved to Hermiston, Carrera Oregon. She worked at JR Simplot in Hermiston, Oregon, for 25 years. She operated a daycare for a few years and is an Avon representative. Barbara was a member of Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, Hermiston, Oregon. She enjoyed crocheting, soap operas, reality TV, camping, ¿VKLQJ DQG FKHULVKHG WLPH with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Jesus Carrera, Hermiston, Ore.; son Tony Carrera and his wife Janelle, Hermiston, Ore.; daughter Jessica Blackford and her husband Jason, Portland, Ore.; brothers Melvin and Robert Petrak, both of Chamber- lain, S.D.; sister Diana Bondurant, Hermiston, Ore.; grandchildren Dylan, Perrin, Payton, Layni and Portia; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Clinton Kenneth ‘Ken’ Peck Lexington February 2, 1919-January 2, 2016 Clinton Kenneth “Ken” Peck died on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, in Heppner, Oregon. A lifelong resident of Morrow County, Oregon, he was 96 years old. A memorial service will be held on Feb. 2, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the Lexington Airport. Clinton K. Peck was born on February 2, 1919, on the family wheat farm near Lexington, Oregon. He ZDVWKH¿UVWFKLOGRI*HRUJH N. Peck and Emma Millet Peck. His brother Ellwynne was born two years later and both boys grew up on the family farm and attended school in Lexington. Kenneth graduated from Lexington High School in 1937, and enrolled at Oregon State College (now Oregon State University) that fall. Following his graduation in May 1942 with a F.S. degree in forestry, he went to Navy Midshipmen’s School and then was assigned to service aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, where KH ZDV D JXQQHU\ RI¿FHU for 40 mm antiaircraft guns. He remained on the Enterprise (“The Big E”) until the end of WWII in 1945. In July 1943 when the Enterprise steamed into the Bremerton Naval Yard for repairs, Kenneth married his college sweetheart, Lucile Urey. Early in 1946 they moved to the family farm in Lexington, where Clinton took over the day-to-day farming operation from his parents. Kenneth was very inter- ested in progressive farming methods, new varieties of crops, and soil conservation practices. He took great pride in his nearly weed-free ¿HOGV+HZDVRQHRIWKH¿UVW farmers in Morrow County WROD\RXWKLVZKHDW¿HOGVLQ contour strips to control soil HURVLRQDQGRQHRIWKH¿UVW beef ranchers to raise Black Angus beef cattle. In 1956 he was named Oregon’s Soil Conservation Man of the Year. Kenneth and Lucile had two children, Stephen (born 1946) and Martha (born 1948), who became the third generation to grow up on the family wheat farm.
