The snowfall already this month exceeds by four inches the fall of January, 1912, the time of the last previous heavy snow. Whether or not the present snowfall is heavier than the fall during the cold winters six and seven years ago is not clear as those records are not available. It is reported from Walla Walla that the snowfall in this section is heavier than any for 12 years past. 50 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Jan. 14, 1966 Five interchanges — plus an overpass — are planned for the Stan¿eld Junction-Pend- leton section of Interstate 80 North, a ¿nal plan for the freeway revealed here today. I-80N will utilize existing Highway 30 for two of its four lanes in the 20-mile stretch. A sketch map of the ¿nal routing was deliv- ered Thursday afternoon to the Umatilla County Court by the Oregon Highway Department. The new two lanes will be on the north side of the existing highway from Stan¿eld junction to just east of the Echo cutoff, and from there to Pendleton on the south side. 25 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Jan. 14, 1991 Art Bowman hopes his efforts will somehow help his students stay away from the MacLaren School in Woodburn, the “big house” of the Oregon juvenile corrections system. Bowman runs the school program at the Northeast Oregon Regional Treatment Center in Pendleton. The treatment center is funded by Umatilla County and the state, but Bowman is a bona¿de employee of the Pendleton School District. The reading and mathematics studies are making a difference with most of his students, he says, pointing to a list of impressive before-and-after test results. Many of his students have ¿nished their mandatory stays at the center with math and language skills several grades higher than the ones they entered with.
