Twenty-three of Pendle- ton’s 25 wrestlers went home with a placing and the Bucks ran away with the team title ahead of host Riverside and Grant Union. Heppner was fourth and ,rrigon was ¿fth in the nine-team meet. Champions for Pendleton were Lane Evans at 106 pounds, Dalton Cortazar (113), Scott Chambers (160), Morgan Holcomb (152), JD Peters (170) and Marcus Taylor (220). Several Bucks placed second: Caleb Tremper (106), Koby Jones (132), Brendon Bedolla (138), Alex Rendon (145), Taylor Williamson (170) and Gabe Goad (160). Coming in third for Pend- leton were Aiden Patterson (138) and Mychael Pointer (152). Riverside had a pair of champions in Sylvestre Vasquez (126) and Aris- totle Rockwell (132), two runner-ups in Ulises Calvillo (145) and Andrew Barker (120) and one third-place ¿nisher in ,van Escobedo (152). Heppner’s Ryan Smith won the 120 title. BREMERTON, Wash. — The Hermiston wrestling team continued its recent success this weekend, winning the Gut Check Chal- lenge at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds just across the Puget Sound from Seattle. Hermiston completed the tournament with two individual wins and 163 points, besting the other 24 scholastic team present. The only team to score more — Japan’s Junior National Team — scored 228 points, but was not the Gut Check championship as it was an all-star team. Orting (WA) ¿nished third with 147 points and Yelm (WA) was a distant fourth with 126 points. Sam Colbray topped Clarkston’s (WA) Dylan Beeler in a close 2-1 match for the 220-pound champion- ship, and Bob Coleman beat Taisei Matayuki of Japan for the 195-pound title 4-2. Valen Wyse ¿nished third at 152 pounds with a 2-1 win over Henley’s Daine Taylor, and Andy Wagner beat Chris Joner of Battleground (WA) by fall in the third round in the third-place match. Overall Hermiston went 23-20, with 11 of those wins coming in matches ending in decisions and 12 wins coming in matches ending in falls. Boys Basketball LEBANON 69, PEND- LETON 64 — At Lebanon, after leading by nine points at halftime and at least three for most of the second half, the Buckaroos were unable to hold off the Warriors in Saturday’s non-league game. Lebanon (6-4) shot 23 free throws in the second half to Pendleton’s eight, and when the Bucks (4-6) had a chance to tie it late their three-point attempt bounced in the Warrior’s favor to preserve the win. “We felt like we were the better team,” said Pendleton coach Kyle Tedder, “just some unfortunate things on the road, and you’ve got to expect that going into some- body else’s gym. “There were plays to be made on our part.” Caden Smith led the Bucks with 22 points, Daniel Adams added 17 and James Brady pitched in 12. IRRIGON 61, WESTON-MCEWEN 41 — At Athena, the Irrigon Knights put a halt to its three-game losing streak on Saturday evening when they went on the road and knocked off the Weston- McEwen TigerScots in a Columbia Basin Conference contest. Irrigon coach Mitch Thompson said he was pleased to see his team respond with the win after a tough loss at home to Heppner on Friday. “We did a much better job of executing tonight,” said Irrigon coach Mitch Thompson. Austin Rice was Irrigon’s (9-4, 1-1 CBC) high scorer with 18 points, and Fredy Vera was next with 15 points. Hayden White turned in a nice all-around game as well, with 12 points and 14 rebounds. The game was pretty much even through the ¿rst half, with Irrigon leading 29-22 at the break, but the Knights outscored the TigerScots 15-6 in the third quarter to help pull away. Brett Speed led Weston- McEwen (4-6, 1-1) with 10 points. The game was close at the end of the ¿rst quarter with Heppner (12-1, 2-0 CBC) holding a 21-20 lead. However, the Mustangs outscored Stan¿eld 20-8 in the second quarter — and that was as much cushion as they would need. “We were able to spread (Stan¿eld) out and attack the rim,” said Heppner coach Jeremy Rosenbalm. “We knocked down a handful of 3s, which helped, and our effort on defense picked up.” The Mustangs were paced by four of its ¿ve starters, led by Patrick Collins with a game-high 27 points on 10-15 shooting and 11 rebounds. C.J. Kindle was close behind with 20 points, ¿ve assists, and ¿ve rebounds. Other top scorers were Logan Grieb with 17 points and Weston Putman with 15 points. WESTON-MCEWEN 57, IRRIGON 38 — At Athena, the Weston-McEwen TigerScots dominated the Irrigon Knights throughout the teams’ CBC match-up on Saturday evening, earning the TigerScots second league win in two tries. “The girls allowed their defense to drive their game today,” said Weston- McEwen coach Amber Doremus. “(And) offensively we moved the ball well and were willing to wait for a great opportunity.” Weston-McEwen (5-6, 2-0 CBC) combined for 11 assists and out-rebounded Irrigon by a 36-20 margin. Bailey Hillmick led the TigerScots’ charge with a game-high 19 points, six rebounds and two assists. Ashley Hill also had a strong game, with 12 points and seven rebounds. Jada Burns led Irrigon (4-8, 1-1) with 13 points and four rebounds, but had a game-high seven turnovers. HELIX 43, POWDER VALLEY 38 — At Helix, the Grizzlies shut down Powder Valley’s offense in the fourth quarter to seal its third league win of the season on Saturday night. “We played a great fourth quarter with great defense,” said Helix coach Kirk Flerchinger. “And we’re rolling right along.” Sadie Wilson led Helix (10-3, 3-0 OOL) in scoring with 14 points on ¿ve made shots, but the Grizzlies also saw nice performances from Macey Tullis with 13 points and Charmayne Bennett with 10 points. It was the ¿rst game that Bennett has scored in double ¿gures this season. Flerchinger said that the Grizzlies’ were getting shots to fall in the fourth quarter — including three big 3-pointers by Tullis to help seal a 22-10 advantage in the fourth quarter to seal the win. The girls racked up 433 points at the meet, carried by some strong showings in relay competition. The boys earned 406 points and were headline by ¿rst place ¿nishes by Jon Jennings in the 50 yard freestyle and Lukas Johnson in the 100 yard freestyle. The boys also took ¿rst place in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.86 with the team of Grant Banister, Lukas Johnson, Dylan Clemons, and Jon Jennings. The Hermiston Bulldogs struggled in competition, as the girls turned in 142 points and the boys with 144 points. Hermiston was paced by a ¿fth place ¿nish by the boys 200 yard freestyle relay team of Ryan Barnard, Ryan Stewart, Carson Wrathall, and Jacob Snell for a 28 point performance.
