Two hundred and forty- three runners took off down WKH¿UVWIDLUZD\DW:LOGKRUVH Resort and Casino Golf Course on Thursday at the start of the varsity boys’ 5,000-meter cross country race at the annual Kyle Burn- side Wildhorse Invite. Not all of them were trying to keep pace with Umatilla senior Fabian Cardenas, but all that did failed. We s t o n - M c E w e n ’ s Hayden Scott and Pendle- ton’s Nolan Bylenga took on the challenge and were the only two within striking distance as the race hit the quarter pole, but by the time the runners hit the halfway mark Cardenas had stretched his lead to 50 meters and continued to extend it with every stride.
