Page 2B SPORTS East Oregonian Tuesday, September 8, 2015 SEAHAWKS: Graham’s versatility kept under wraps during preseason Continued from 1B speci¿cally along the offen- sive line where veteran Max Unger is no longer around and Seattle will begin the season with two players, Drew Nowak and Garry Gilliam, who have never started an NFL game. And there’s the inevitable pull back to that post-Super Bowl feeling and if Seattle will get the chance to erase that memory. “That’s such an obvious factor because it gets brought up all the time, and you get asked the questions and stuff. We understand that, and everybody gets that,” Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. “How many teams get back to a championship game twice, and then how many teams get back to it three times? There’s no reason for anybody to think you can do that, it just doesn’t happen. So that’s a cool thing, that’s a cool challenge for us. So all of that kind of has a subtle way of fueling us.” What to watch for as the Seahawks open the season on Sunday at St. Louis: FEED THE BEAST: Marshawn Lynch is entering that unique age for running backs where production typi- cally drops off. Lynch turned 29 in April, but if last season was any indication, he is not slowing down. Lynch rushed for 1,306 yards — second most in his career — and a career-high 13 touchdowns in the regular season. The addition of veteran and close friend Fred Jackson should make it possible to give Lynch breaks; Jackson will likely be Seattle’s main third- down running back. HERE’S JIMMY: Seattle stayed basic during the preseason with how it used new offensive toy Jimmy Graham. Expect the Seahawks to start showing off Graham’s versatility now. The tight end’s presence in the offense should open coverage for wide receivers Doug Baldwin and Jermaine Kearse. Wilson should also have the chance to be more aggressive with some of his throws down¿eld because of Graham’s size. The question for Graham is if he can be a capable blocker in the run game and not a liability. SHUFFLE THE DECK: The offensive line will be under close watch throughout the season. Left guard was so problematic that Justin Britt was moved from right tackle — where he started all last year — to guard midway through training camp. Coaches have raved about Nowak’s strength and athleticism, but he was a defensive lineman in college. Right guard J.R. Sweezy and left tackle Russell Okung are the only certainties on the line as the season begins. LEGION OF WHOM?: It’s strange to think the questions with Seattle’s defense rest in the secondary. All-Pros Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas are still there — although Thomas’ health is still somewhat in question after offseason shoulder surgery. Chancel- lor’s holdout creates a void not easy to ¿ll because of the unique size and athleticism he brings to the position. Dion Bailey will likely get the ¿rst opportunity to step in for Chancellor. There are also questions about who should start opposite Sherman after an unimpressive preseason from veteran Cary Williams. LONG-TERM SUCCESS: Even before the season begins, Seattle’s already been successful by getting Wilson and All-Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner signed to extensions. The core group Seattle has amassed is talented enough that its championship window would appear to be open beyond this season, giving the Seahawks even more opportu- nities to make the Super Bowl loss to New England a faded moment. PREPS: Irrigon, Riverside boys win Special District 4 debuts in soccer Continued from 1B senior Lennox Lewis in 86th (23:12.3). Oregon City edged Union by six points for the girls team title and Pendleton was a distant third despite senior Delany Clem’s individual title. Clem won with a time of 20:02.6 and La Grande’s Heather Keniry was second with 20:12.8. “I didn’t have a good season last year, so it’s good to come back and already have a good start, and my team, too,” said Clem, a senior who has won both of her races so far this season. Several other local teams were also running Saturday. Hermiston’s girls placed seventh and were led by sophomore Melany Solorio in 16th (21:54.3). Mac-Hi was ninth in the girls race and was led by senior Elise Grif¿th in 25th (22:14.7). Slow starts also hurt Mac-Hi as it lost each of its pool play games, one Helix 25-13, 27-25 and the other to Riverside 25-18, 25-23. Pioneers (0-3) coach Amanda Nelson said she was happy to see the team ¿ght back to force close games in ech second set, however, and is con¿dent their ¿rst win isn’t far off. “We have some new girls on varsity this year, and the team is becoming more familiar with new people and positions,” she said. “Overall, I feel this group has great skill and potential to go far this season.” Senior Amber Wells led Mac-Hi with six aces, ¿ve blocks and ¿ve kills on the day, and junior Delaney Karrels had a team-high 24 assists to go with a pair of aces. Pendleton hosts La Grande today at 5:30 p.m. Boys Soccer HERMISTON 2, LA GRANDE 1 — At Herm- iston, Joel Mendez and Edwin Rosales scored goals and Antonio Campos had nine saves in the net to lead Hermiston (2-0) past La Grande in a non-league game on Saturday. Rosales cleaned up a rebound in front of the net in the 24th minute to give Hermiston the lead, and Rosales converted off a Freddy Rodriguez pass in the 62nd minute to make it 2-0. With the wind at its back, La Grande peppered Campos in the second half, but couldn’t break through until a defensive breakdown let a shooter get one-on-one with Campos in the 72nd minute. Hermiston travels to 6A David Douglas today in a game that will provide a litmus test for the Bulldogs, said coach Rich Harshberger. “We’re starting to get to know them pretty well and every year it’s like, ‘OK this is the level we’ve got to play it if we’re going to compete at the state level,’” he said. “I hope it’s an eye-opener for the boys because we’ve had a couple of good games, but not good enough if we’re going to do what we want to in the state postseason.” IRRIGON 4, CULVER 0 — At Irrigon, the Knights won their season and league opener on Saturday with a shutout of the Bulldogs. A bevy of scoring oppor- tunities went unful¿lled in the ¿rst half until Kevin Villareal got the Knights’ ¿rt goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 36th minute. Irrigon (1-0, 1-0 SD4) then pulled away after half- time with goals by Kenny Blurton (44th minute), Olivia Luna Castelanos (51st) and Isaac Estrada (66th). Luna-Castelanos assisted Blurton’s goal, and was in turn assisted by Ruben Barrera on her goal. “I was impressed with the kids, they really worked hard,” said ¿rst-year Irrigon coach Paul Keefer. “They worked on a lot of the things we’ve been doing in practice and it was great way to start the season.” Irrigon will play at new league foe City Christian (0-0) on Saturday. RIVERSIDE 1, UMATILLA 0 — At Umatilla, a ¿rst-half goal by Francisco Chavez provided the difference in the ¿rst meeting between rivals this season. Chavez scored on a penalty kick that was awarded when Alexis Mendoza was fouled inside the penalty box as he lined up a shot. Riverside coach Francisco Velasquez said it was an even game with each team holding about 50 percent possession, but Riverside (2-0, 1-0 SD4) was more on target with its shots, putting eight on goal to Umatilla’s (0-1, 0-2) three. The teams will meet again on Oct. 10 in Boardman. Girls Soccer LA GRANDE 8, RIVERSIDE 0 — At La Grande, the Tigers scored six times in the ¿rst half to run away from the Pirates in a non-league game on Saturday.
