The ¿rst call was at 1: a.m. from a woman who said someone made two transactions to Virgin 0oEile totaling 1, on her credit card. The second was at 11: a.m. when a woman reported a fraudulent charge on her Wells )argo deEit card for 7 to a satellite TV service. And the third was at 12:1 p.m. when a woman asked to speak to an of¿cer aEout someone stealing her Social Security check and changing information without her knowledge. •A power company employee at 11:1 reported he was disconnecting a residence on Highway , 0ilton-)reewater, when a man approached, slapped his hand and interfered with the work. The employee asked for a Umatilla County sheriff’s deputy to accompany him to the residence. •A woman at 1: p.m. told Pendleton police she was calling on Eehalf of another woman who was unhappy with the ¿fth-wheel trailer she moved into. Police considered this a civil proElem. •A Pendleton resident at 1: p.m. reported receiving threatening te[t messages from his neighEor. •Pendleton police at 2: p.m. received a call aEout registered se[ offenders hanging out at Stillman Park, 1 S.E. Byers Ave., Pendleton. •An ,rrigon caller at :1 p.m. reported the theft of tires and wheels from a vehicle on South First Street, Irrigon. •A man at :2 p.m. reported the theft of a -foot trailer from property off Highway 11, Pendleton. •A Weston man at :7 p.m. reported someone Eroke into his residence on Highway 2 and made a mess of the place and also left Eehind items that were not his. •A motorcycle crash sent a Pendleton couple to the hospital. 2regon State Police reported James Shanklin, 2, and 0arilyn Shanklin, , were riding a Honda motorcycle at aEout : p.m. north on Highway near milepost B when the machine rolled on its right side, slid aEout 1 feet and smacked into a deer in the roadway. AmEulances took the Shanklins to St. Anthony Hospital, Pendleton. Larry Blanc, hospital spokesman, said Marilyn Shanklin was treated and released Monday, and James Franklin went to the emergency department, which then transferred him to the critical care unit. As of Tuesday morning, Blanc said, Shanklin was in fair condition. •Some threats Must make you cringe. A woman at : p.m. reported a male trespasser and clothes thief at Centerville R.V. Park, 21 W. Sherman St., Athena. She also said she told the man he did not Eelong there, and he followed her into the Eathroom where he said he would defecate and ruE her head in it. She told dispatchers he was in the shower at the moment and doing laundry, Eut he would run from law. She said she would Ee availaEle for law enforcement contact. •The Morrow County Sheriff’s 2f¿ce is looking into a case of trespassing after a caller at 1:22 p.m. reported Muveniles enter private property at Mountain *len Apartments, 2 Pioneer Drive, Heppner, and rip off the “No Trespassing” signs. •A woman at : p.m. reported a male pulled a gun on her father on Northwest Third Street, Irrigon, and then Àed in a vehicle. Law enforcement did not ¿nd the suspect. He died on August 16, 2015, in Herm- iston, Oregon, at the age of 86 years. John was raised by Joe and Rita Mohatt Leonard for a good part of his childhood in Craig, Colorado. Rita then relocated her family to the Willamette Valley before moving to Leonard Portland, Oregon. John was united in marriage to Ann Marie Elliott on April 11, 1953, in Portland, Oregon. They lived in Portland and John worked for the United States Postal Service. He retired as the superintendent of registry in 1992 after 42 years of service. They moved to Hermiston, Oregon, in 1996 where they have lived since. He enjoyed elk hunting, ¿shing, camping and hiking. John cherished time with his family, especially his grand- children. He was a member of Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ann Marie Leonard, Hermiston, Ore.; daughter Karen Yvonne Breese (Tom), Freeland, Wash. November 9, 1919-July 13, 2015 Potlatch, Idaho; son Matthew “Matt” Leonard (Deanna), Hermiston, Ore.; son-in-law Dennis Dixon, Falls City, Wash.; brothers Joe Leonard, Arizona, Bob and Dave Leonard, both of Prineville, Ore., and Mike Leonard, Battleground, Wash.; sister Kathy Bushman, Portland, Ore.; eight grand- children; one great- grandson on the way; and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe and his brother, James S. “Jim” Miller, bought their parents’ farm and operated as Miller Brothers. Joe and Jim divided the property after their father’s death with Joe taking the prop- erty laying south. He produced wheat and raised and fattened beef cattle until retirement. Joe maintained his own machine shop where he used his machinist, welding and woodworking skills to design and build useful equipment and tools to support his farm operation. It was common to see a chassis with a loader or bucket lift operated by a modi¿ed engine and trans- mission with the seat facing backward. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph “Wells” and Belle Miller of McKay Creek, Pilot Rock. Joe is survived by his wife of 73 years, Anita B. Miller; children Marilyn Miller and Don (Linda) Miller; grand- children Ben (Rebecca) Armstrong, Jesse (Jenny) Miller and Chelsea Miller; great-grandchildren Natalie Armstrong and Spencer Armstrong; brother James S. “Jim” (June) Miller; nephew Glen (Sherry) Miller, niece Krista (Joe) Hunter, and many grand- and great-grandnephews and -nieces. Joe was 95 years old. Joe Miller was born in Pendleton, Oregon, on November 9, 1919. He was the ¿rst son of Joseph Wells and Belle Miller on McKay Creek, Pilot Rock, Oregon. Growing up he assisted on the farm raising beef cattle, feed for cattle, maintaining equip- ment, constructing buildings and working harvest. Joe Miller went to country Grade School No. 43 located at the intersection of Rockwell and Schoolhouse roads and graduated from Pendleton High School. At Trade School in Portland, Joe studied gas and diesel engines and welding. Joe married Anita Joan Beilke on December 29, 1941, in Pendleton. Joe served in the US Navy 48th Construction Battalion (CB), known as the 48th Seabees, from December 9, 1942, to November 6, 1945. Joe served in Maui working on enlarging the air ¿eld, performing maintenance, digging sewer ditch, running rock crusher and building the base for 3rd Marines. He next shipped to Guam and worked with the Maui crew making culverts from oil barrels for roadway water drainage and erecting prefab buildings. Meanwhile, the Marines were clearing enemy hide- outs. Joe said, “A list was posted for leave to stateside. I was on the list. We boarded an escort carrier and slept on cots in the hanger deck. We docked in San Francisco and I went by train to Portland and was met by Anita. I was two and a half years away.” After leave, Joe reported to Camp Parks, Calif., and shipped out to Okinawa where camps were set up and minor jobs completed as the war was over. He returned to Bremerton, Wash., for discharge and was met by Anita in Seattle.
