Clore Island City July 9, 1935-August 2, 2015 LeRoy Charles “Big Papa” Smith, 80, of Island City passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2015, at his resi- dence. A casual dress grave- side service will be held at the Summer- ville Cemetery on Saturday, August 8th at 2:00 p.m. LeRoy was born July 9, 1935, in Elk Point, South Dakota, to Ralph C. and Evelyn M. (Billings) Smith. He resided in S u m m e r v i l l e , Smith Ore., for 51 years. LeRoy attended Bannings High School in Wilmington, California. He married Betty Jean Morrow on April 30, 1954. They were together for 61 years. LeRoy was employed with the Union Paci¿c Railroad for 33 years. He enjoyed hunting, ¿shing, golf, and B.S., loved to do bingo calling at Odd Fellows Lodge Hall in Summerville. He was famous for his smoked ¿sh recipe, he loved bowling and keeping up with all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a life member of the Odd Fellows Lodge #49 and was a Past Noble Grand and was active in the Christmas Basket Program. He was past president of La Grande County Club, a past Master Lifetime Member of Masonic Lodge #67 in Elgin, Walla Walla April 20, 1921-August 1, 2015 Ore., a member of the Scot- tish Rite of Free Masonry, Baker City, Ore., and a member of the La Grande Elks Club. LeRoy is survived by his wife, Betty Jean; children Mike Smith and his wife Annette of Auburn, Wash., Craig Smith and his wife Terri of Hermiston, Ore,, Cindy Burright and her husband Scott of Ione, Ore., and Pam Glenn and her husband Randy of Summerville, Ore.; sisters Leona Shaffer of Summer- ville, Ore., and Marolyn Smith and her husband Dave of La Grande, Ore.; 15 grand- children; 31 great-grandchil- dren; numerous nieces and nephews; Aunt Deloris Phil- lips of Bakers¿eld, Calif.; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Evelyn; brother Konnie Smith; and great-granddaughter Isabella Grace Smith. Mr. Clore is survived by his daughter Julie Clore of Hermiston, Ore.; son Lance Clore of Astoria, Ore.; grandchildren Donald Clore and Amy Prescott; six great-grandchildren; nephews Delbert and Doug Berg, and niece Linda Kay Burg; stepsons Lloyd Shank of Athena, Ore., and Bill Shank of Pendleton, Ore.; stepdaughter Ruth Marie Rich of Athena, Ore.; good friend Mary Lee Becker of Walla Walla, Wash.; and stepgrandchildren Shannon Wong, Ashley Froese, Renee Shank, Andrea Weatherford and Juliann Moore. He married Ruth Gayman in 1944 and she preceded him in death. Pendleton board to begin meeting at Early Learning Center PENDLETON — Starting Sept. 21, the Pendleton School Board’s regular meetings will be held at the Pendleton Early Learning Center, formerly Hawthorne Alternative High School. The meetings will be moved from the InterMountain Education Service District, where they were held for the past few years. The regular meeting time will remain on the ¿rst Monday following the ¿rst Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. The board’s monthly work sessions will still be held at the Pendleton School District of¿ce at 1100 Southgate, Suite 8 on the ¿rst Tuesday of the month at 8 a.m. with the exceptions of the October, January and April work sessions, which will be held at 3:30 p.m. to accommodate meetings with the district leadership team.
