SPORTS Friday, July 31, 2015 East Oregonian Pac-12 Football Larry Scott, Pac-12 Commission- er, speaks during Pac-12 Football Media Days, Thursday, July 30, 2015, in Burbank, Calif. 8S& picNed to Zin conference title By GREG BEACHAM Associated Press B85BAN., &alif. ² Southern &alifornia Zas picNed to Zin its ¿rst Pac-12 football title since 2008 in a preseason media poll Thursday. The Trojans received 21 of 45 votes for the title, edging defending champion Oregon. The 'ucNs got 1 votes for the top spot and Zere picNed to Zin the North division, Zhile 8S& is favored to Zin the South. Oregon has Zon four of the last six league titles, reaching the national cham- pionship game last season. Stanford, Zhich Zon the croZn in 2012 and 2013, Zas picNed to ¿nish second in the North division ahead of &alifornia. “<ou NnoZ everybody is going to be better than they Zere a year ago,´ said Stanford coach 'avid ShaZ, Zho has TuarterbacN .evin 2015 Preseason Media Poll First place votes in parentheses NORTH 1, Oregon (37) 2, Stanford (8) 3, California 4, Washington 5, Washington St. 6, Oregon St. Pts 262 231 174 129 89 60 Hogan bacN for another year. “It’s going to be an insane year in our conference Zith the teams Ze have and the players Ze have.´ While 8S& has 16 returning starters from coach Steve SarNisian’s debut team last season, TuarterbacN &ody .essler liNely is the biggest factor in the selection. The proli¿c passer is bacN for his third season as the Trojans’ starter, Zhile Oregon must replace Heisman Zinner 0arcus 0ariota. “8S& Zill be one of the better teams in the country,´ Washington coach &hris Petersen said. SOUTH 1, USC (32) 2, Arizona St. (7) 3, UCLA (6) 4, Arizona 5, Utah 6, Colorado PTS 254 200 180 155 105 46 8S& Zas hardly a consensus choice: Five teams received votes as the confer- ence champion. 8S& hadn’t been picNed to Zin the league since 2012, Zhen the Trojans Zere the preseason No. 1. They ¿nished -6 and unranNed, and coach /ane .if¿n Zas ¿red less than a year later. Arizona State Zas picNed second in the loaded South division. The Sun Devils are just ahead of 8&/A, Zhich has beaten crosstoZn rival 8S& three straight times. Arizona, Zhich Zon the South last year, is picNed fourth in the division. BARRS-WOODS: Hyphen added to honor mother Continued from 1B ¿rst tZo seasons at Oregon State, living up to his billing as one of the nation’s top prep linemen, and could play any position on the line. “I expect Isaac to start camp the ¿rst day and be ready to go, Zhich is great,´ $ndersen said. “I don’t Zant to see him on the injury report anymore. We’re past that. No young man in the country deserves to have an opportunity to play football again (more) than him. Nobody has ZorNed harder.´ Barrs-Woods also has ZorNed to be the centerpiece of the offense, including changing his mindset on and off the ¿eld. When Barrs- Woods Zas sharing the bacN- ¿eld Zith Sean 0annion, the Pac-12’s career leader in yards passing, he could defer to the veteran TuarterbacN. NoZ Barrs-Woods has to be more focused in his duties to maNe things easier for potential starting TuarterbacNs Seth &ollins, 0arcus 0c0aryion or NicN 0itchell. “It just magni¿es Zhat I have to do even more, because the room for error is not as big,´ Barrs-Woods said. “With Sean 0annion bacN there, $ll-$merican TuarterbacN, NF/ TuarterbacN, he pretty much NnoZs everything. Not saying these young guys Zon’t, but they don’t have as much experience, so it is just my job to help on pass (protection), catch every single ball, run the ball. That is the Zay I can help those guys the most, by controlling the clocN and helping play-action get set up.´ $ndersen tooN a similarly conservative approach at Wisconsin, riding 0elvin Gordon for 4,196 yards rushing and 41 touchdoZns over the last tZo seasons. A self-professed “sports junNie,´ Barrs-Woods Zas Zatching Gordon long before Andersen became Oregon State’s coach, measuring his production against the best in the nation. “I’m a competitor, too,´ Barrs-Woods said. “I Zould looN at my stats, see Zhat the other running bacNs did. Of course 0elvin bleZ me out of the Zater. Seeing a guy liNe him and (Georgia running bacN Todd) Gurley Zas so exciting.´ Besides adding to his 2,250 career yards rushing and 24 touchdoZns, Barrs- Woods Zill also have a neZ addition to the bacN of his jersey this season, hyphenating his last name to recognize his mother, Faith Barrs. +oZever, Barrs-Woods Zon’t legally change his name until after the season. There are limits to hoZ busy Barrs-Woods plans to be this fall. Page 3B AP Photo/ Mark J. Terrill Pac-12 commish: No expansion plans, but bright future ahead By GREG BEACHAM Associated Press B85BAN., &alif. ² Pac-12 &ommissioner /arry Scott envisions ¿erce compe- tition, Heisman Trophy challengers and national championship bids for his loaded football conference in the next feZ years. Scott doesn’t expect any neZ members, hoZever. “I do not see us expanding in the foreseeable future,´ Scott said Thursday Zhile opening the Pac-12’s media days. “We are delighted Zith 12 schools. It’s ZorNed exceedingly Zell for us.´ Scott projected optimism and contentment at Warner Bros. Studios as the Pac-12 heads into its 100-year anniversary celebration. He believes the league is gaining the national respect it deserves, and he is optimistic that ATT’s merger Zith DirecT9 Zill alloZ the Pac-12 NetZorNs to increase its distri- bution to a less embarrassing portion of the nation. But the conference hasn’t expanded since adding Utah and &olorado before the 2011 season, and it Zon’t be putting out the Zelcome mat soon. After considering addi- tional expansion in previous years, particularly Zhen the Big 12 appeared to be on the verge of disintegration, Scott noZ believes the current format provides an optimal balance of tough league games and nonconference opportunities. “As a 12-team conference playing nine conference games, this is an interesting distinction betZeen us and some other conferences,´ Scott said. “This is Zhy I’m con¿dent standing up and saying no one has got a tougher schedule than the Pac-12, and the Pac-12 champion has got the toughest road, because there aren’t many misses that you can have Zithin your confer- ence.´ The Pac-12’s football rise isn’t just the product of the optimism of a perpetu- ally upbeat commissioner. 0arcus 0ariota’s Heisman Trophy victory and Oregon’s appearance in the national championship game Zere just the latest manifestations of the West &oast league’s rise in quality and esteem. Oregon State coach Gary Andersen demonstrated its draZ Zhen he left Big Ten poZerhouse Wisconsin after just tZo seasons to taNe over the Beavers, a solid program that’s mostly NnoZn nation- ally for being perpetually in the DucNs’ shadoZ. Granted, Andersen is a native West- erner Zho got to be closer to home, but the Pac-12’s spot- light is undeniably attractive. “I absolutely have felt a huge sZing in the last tZo years,´ Andersen said. “During those tZo years I Zas in the 0idZest, the Pac-12 has gained a ton of respect nationally, (and) it’s because of the investment in athletics as a Zhole, is my opinion. It gives you the opportunity to taNe better care of the Nids. If you play in the Pac-12, you play at Oregon State, you deserve to have the best of the best.´ Scott also said the Pac-12 prides itself on tough nonconference schedules, but doesn’t believe it hurts the West &oast schools’ chances in the &ollege Foot- ball Playoff. “I thinN noZ Ze’re being reZarded for that strength of schedule, and part of it is (having) 12 (teams),´ Scott said. “When you go beyond 12, you’re going to dilute someZhat. <ou’re going to have more erratic types of schedules Zithin your conference.´ The Pac-12’s coaches realize that collective success carries an individual price, hoZever. The league landed six teams in the preseason coaches’ poll, topped by defending champion Oregon at No. 5 and preseason media- poll favorite Southern &ali- fornia at No. 10. The South division appears particularly loaded, Zith U&/A, Arizona State, defending champion Arizona and Utah all looNing liNe contenders. “I Zould not be shocNed if this is the year Ze have a conference championship Zith a team in there that has tZo losses,´ said Stanford coach David ShaZ, Zho led his second straight team to the 5ose BoZl in January 2014. “TalNing to those (selec- tion) committee members, they recognize hoZ dif¿cult this conference is. If you can come out of this conference as a conference champion, you’re going to get into that four-team playoff because of the road you have to travel.´ CLASSIFIED M ARK ETPL A C E Pla ce cla ssified a d s on lin e a t w w w.ea storeg on m a rketp la ce.com or ca ll 5 4 1-278-26 78 C O N TAC T US EDITIO N S DEADLIN ES 24 HO UR S ERVIC E 333 E.
