SCHOLARSHIPS New scholarship offered for PHS students PENDLETON — The children of Dorothy and Al Cereghino have created a scholarship fund at The Oregon Community Foundation to honor their parents. Through the Dorothy and Al Cereghino Scholarship Fund, schol- arships will be awarded to graduating seniors from Pendleton High School. The Cereghinos were both long-time Eastern Oregon high school teachers. A Minnesota native, Dorothy married Aldo Cereghino in 1946 and the couple had three children, Nancy, Adele and Mark. The Cereghinos moved from Portland to Pendleton in 1968 when Dorothy accepted a teaching position at Pendleton High School. She taught business education and then English from 1969 until 1985. Al taught at Ukiah High School, and later served as superintendent for the Ukiah School District. “My parents believed strongly in the transfor- mative value of education. Even a year or two of higher education can make someone a better parent and citizen. They felt a special DI¿QLW\ IRU VWXGHQWV WKDW may have overcome obsta- cles to get to college. We’re hoping these scholarships will give students like those the boost they need to go on to higher education. It is what my parents would have wanted,” said Nancy &HUHJKLQR:LOVRQ Dorothy died April 16, 2015, in Pendleton after a brief hospitalization. Al passed away on April 6, 2004. He married LaVonna Kruse October 21, 1951, in College Place. In 1952 he was inducted into the Army, spending basic training in Virginia, Texas, and Washington. The remainder of his service time was at the Letterman Army Hospital, San Francisco, California. In 1954 he was employed at Harris Pine Mills, Pend- OHWRQ2UHJRQ+H¿OHGVDZV and eventually went into the maintenance department as a machinist and supervisor. When Harris Pine Mills closed in 1991, he worked at Blue Mountain Forest Products until his retirement in 1996. He especially enjoyed working with the youth of WKH FKXUFK LQ WKH 3DWK¿QGHU Club. He spent well over 40 years as a counselor, teacher and leader. He had many hobbies, rock collecting, cutting and polishing being one of his favorites. He liked trading rocks he collected for rocks from around the world. He enjoyed camping with family and friends, either in the mountains or at the beach. His inter- ests ranged from antiques, restoring old cars, digging for old bottles, building things from iron and stamp collecting. He often said that if you have two of an item, you have a collection. He liked to share his inter- ests with others. His love for his family, church and his sense of humor remained with him to the end. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Clarence, son Don, and granddaughter +HDWKHU*ULI¿Q Florence ‘Lorraine’ Thompson Morgan Hermiston October 28, 1927-July 20, 2015 Florence “Lorraine” Thompson Morgan was born October 28, 1927, in Ekalaka, Montana, to Andrew Jacob and Mona Boggs Thompson. She grew up in Ekalaka and was no stranger to hard work and the life of a cowgirl in south- eastern Montana. Lorraine graduated from Carter County High School and went on to work in Baker and Helena, Montana, before the family eventually moved to Fossil, where she became the book- keeper at Misner Motors. Morgan While in Fossil she lived in Dude Shell’s rooming house, where she met Dude’s brother, Clayton Morgan. Clayton and Lorraine were married on December 11, 1948, at Goldendale, Wash- ington. The couple lived in Spray, Kinzua and Fossil, eventually making Condon their home where they lived for 26 years and raised their children Linda, Keith and Kevin. While in Condon, Clayton and Lorraine had a number of business ventures including Froman Chevrolet, where Clayton was the sales manager and Lorrain kept the books. In the late ’50s the Shoestring Drive In was built and soon became the gathering place for all the kids of Condon and Air Force service men of the Radar Base. Many hours were spent playing pinball machines and listening to various guys from the Air Base play music late into the night while enjoying great burgers, shakes and fries. The Drive In was owned and operated by Lorraine, Bonnie Leise and eventually with her little sister Wanda Couture, who lived in Fossil. After a heart condition in the late Sixties the Drive In was sold and Lorraine went to work for First National Bank. She worked in the banking industry until she retired in the early 1990s at the Keiser branch of Wells Fargo in Salem, Oregon. After her retirement in Salem and the passing of Clayton, her husband of 45 years, she moved to Hood River, Oregon, where she enjoyed her time at the Hood River Senior Center and particularly her pinochle group. Lorraine eventually moved to Hermiston, Oregon, where she lived the past 11 years of her life. The last two years were spent at Sun Terrace Assisted Living Facility where she became very involved and lived KHUEHVW¿QDO\HDUV She was part of the Facility Council serving as treasurer, Kitchen Band and became quite the jewelry maker. She also enjoyed embroidering dish towels, which were a family favorite. In addition to the crafts she also enjoyed music, particularly country music and the traditional old hymns. Lorraine is survived by daughter Linda Sawyer and her husband Lynn of Powell Butte, Oregon; sons Keith Morgan and his wife Edie of Hermiston, Oregon, and Kevin Morgan and his wife Jean of Hood River, Oregon; grandchildren their spouses and her great grandchildren: Jake Morgan of Hood River, Oregon, Shane, Linzie, Liam and Simon Sawyer of Boise, Idaho, Max, Angie and Stella Morgan of Tigard, Oregon, Mark, Cydney and Harlow McElligott of Ione, Oregon, Shelby Morgan of Monmouth, Oregon, and Billy, Amy, Billy Jr. and Jayden Bolton of Cotton- wood, Arizona; as well as many nieces and nephews. El Centro, Calif. $OYLQ $O -DPHV 9LQVRQ of El Centro, Calif., passed away at Kadlec Hospital in Richland, Wash., on June 26, 2015, after a brief illness. Services will be held in October 2015 in Heppner at the Elks Lodge; more details to follow. Al was born to Delbert Ted and Suzanne B. Vinson on October 30, 1949, in Heppner, Ore. He graduated from Heppner High in 1968. He went to work for Lott’s Electric in Heppner during his junior and senior years. After graduation Vinson he went to work at USG in Pilot Rock, Ore., and lived in Pendleton, Ore. On Sept. 30, 1972, he married Alma E. Dile and they moved shortly thereafter to Heppner where he went to work for Kinzua Corp. in the lumber industry. He had many different jobs and worked his way up to the Co-Gen 10 Meg Steam Plant where he excelled in operating the power plant. In 1988 moved to Yuba City, Calif., to be on the startup crew building a power plant utilizing the LM5000 jet engine to produce steam. In 1991 he was moved to Holt- ville where the company took over the geo-thermal wells. In 1993 he started working for the Imperial Irrigation district in El Centro as an auxiliary operator at the power plant. He continued to work there, working himself up the ranks to become a journeymen power plant operator at the time of his death. He was involved with many organizations: Heppner Elks 358, Pendleton Eagles #28, had over 50 foster children, host parent to many foreign exchange students through American )LHOG 6HUYLFH $)6 ,Q 1999 he joined the Optimist International organization with the Sunrise of Imperial Valley Club., He was also a member of the DVOO’S DEATH NOTICES Robert H.
