Court Ave. $QHPSOR\HHZDV¿UHGIURP6XEZD\6L[WK6W Umatilla, for stealing, another employee reported to the Umatilla Police Department at 3:39 p.m. The company didn’t want to press charges but did want the incident documented. •Milton-Freewater police at 9:41 p.m. received a report of tools stolen from a residence in the 1300 block of College Street. •Umatilla police received a report of theft at 9:52 p.m. from a resident of Columbia Crest Apartments, 1500 Second St. The caller said packages that were delivered were missing. •A green Saturn traveling east on Seventh Street, Umatilla, swerved and hit a woman and then continued on, still swerving, a caller reported at 10:44 p.m. The 38-year-old woman was reported to be complaining of pain but was sitting in a chair until Umatilla police could respond. SUNDAY •A man called Pendleton police at 11:40 a.m. to report a weedeater and blower were stolen from his vehicle at Banner Bank, 125 S.E. ARRESTS, CITATIONS Friday •Oregon State Police arrested Douglas Leonard Paczan, 48, DGGUHVVQRWSURYLGHGRQFKDUJHVRIGULYLQJXQGHUWKHLQÀXHQFH RILQWR[LFDQWVUHFNOHVVGULYLQJDWWHPSWLQJWRHOXGHSROLFH YHKLFOHDQGUHIXVDORIEUHDWKLQWR[LFDQWWHVW263UHFHLYHG multiple complaints of a wrong-way driver on Interstate 84 near PLOHSRVW7KHRI¿FHUDWWHPSWHGWRVWRSWKHYHKLFOHEXWWKH driver accelerated to 95 mph. After about three miles the driver suddenly made a hard left, drove into the median and rolled his vehicle several times. He was taken to St. Anthony Hospital, Pendleton, where a blood test revealed a 0.12 BAC. He was released with minor injuries and lodged at the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton. Saturday •OSP arrested Mike Rudolf Garrett, 55, address not provided, for duii (drugs) and Tricia Brown, 44, of Fairview, for duii. •Boardman police arrested Yanike Binene, 25, address not provided, for felony unauthorized entry of motor vehicle. SCHOLARSHIPS Ione students receive McElligott scholarships IONE — Five Ione High School graduates have been named recipients of the 2015-16 Maryan L. McElli- gott Memorial Scholarship: Charlette Burghard, a sophomore at Eastern Oregon University; Emily Holland, a sophomore at Carroll College in Montana; Stephen Holland, a senior at Lin¿eld College in Oregon; JoAnna Patton, a senior at Eastern Oregon University; and Tashina Rushlow, a junior at Eastern Oregon University. Each will each receive a $1,500 scholarship for the upcoming school year. The Maryan L. McElligott Memorial Scholarship fund has awarded scholarships to Ione High School alumni each year since 1997. The scholarship is open to all college undergraduates, with a preference given to students in their sophomore year or above. The fund was established in memory of Mrs. McElligott, who passed away in 1993 after a battle with cancer. The Maryan L. McElli- gott Memorial Scholarship fund makes annual awards to graduates of Ione High School who are enrolled or will be enrolled in a full- time undergraduate course of study at any accredited post-secondary institution, including out-of-state institutions. Applicants, including McElligott scholarship recipients, may reapply each year as long as they meet the eligibility requirements. HONORS Whitworth names spring laureates SPOKANE — Whit- worth University recently named local students to its Laureate Society. The student quali¿ed for the academic honor society by maintaining a grade point average of at least 3.75 during the semester. Honored were Rebecca Jepsen of Heppner; Allison Rude and Nolan West of Hermiston; and Hannah Hale of Pendleton. Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private liberal arts university af¿liated with the Presbyte- rian church. The university, which has an enrollment of nearly 3,000 students, offers 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Chet was born on April 14, 1949, in Medford, Oregon. Chet graduated from Riverside High School in Boardman, Oregon, in 1967 as the state champion foot- ball quarterback. He attended Blue Mountain Commu- nity College in Pendleton, Ore., where his basketball team was recognized by the NWACC as a hall of fame team. It was during his time at BMCC when he was reconnected with his high school Phillips sweetheart, Lorrie Peterson Phillips, who was also attending BMCC. After graduation from Blue Mountain, he went to Oregon College of Education where he obtained his teaching degree. He pursued his career in education in Sheridan, Ore., as a junior high school English teacher, while coaching the football and basketball teams. After 7 years of teaching, he and his family moved to Beaverton where he worked for Equitable/Axa Insurance Company for over 25 years. His love of sports kept him busy with volunteering as a football and baseball coach during this time. Shortly after his retirement, Chet and Lorrie moved back to Boardman, Ore., where he helped take care of Lorrie’s ailing parents. Chet was a passionate hunter and ¿sherman who loved taking his wife, sons, grandsons and friends with him on his many adventures outdoors. On his 50th birthday, he shot his prized trophy bull elk. Another hobby of his was stock car racing in Hermiston where he became the 2005 street stock class champion. He was an avid gardener, caretaker, photographer, and traveler. He was passionate about the future of his hometown and became mayor of Boardman in 2008. In his leisurely time, he enjoyed cooking for friends, family, and those at the local senior center where he volunteered. He is survived by his loving wife, Lorrie Peterson Phillips; his two sons, Dean and Terry Phillips; and his grandsons Will Phillips and Michael Crawford. He was also survived by one brother and ¿ve sisters. Respectively, the family will be holding a private family memorial service. She went peacefully to be with the Lord, surrounded by friends and family. Debbie was born on December 7, 1950, in Pend- leton, Ore., to Doris Crystal (Jones) and Perry James Reid, and grew up in Dayton, Wash. She graduated from Dayton High School in 1969 and married Garry Wilson LeRoy Wilson on June 28th of that year in Hermiston, Ore. The couple moved back and forth between Oregon and Texas for Garry’s job over the years, before settling permanently in Hermiston. Debbie worked numerous local jobs early in their marriage before retiring from Wal-Mart in 2012 after 20 years. First and foremost, Debbie will be remembered as a loving wife, a mother and a grandmother. She was a kind, gentle woman who loved her family and the Lord. She lived to make people smile and held on to her sense of humor to the end. Debbie was one of the ¿rst members of Hermiston Christian Center. She enjoyed staying active in the community by volunteering for various causes, including the Hermiston Christian School and the Special Olympics of Hermiston.
