Chief Scott Stanton said the single-vehicle rollover crash happened about 5 a.m. near where the road intersects with Bensel Road. One person was able to crawl out of the overturned car and two more had to be extricated by the ¿re department. The two trapped passengers were then transported to Good Shepherd Medical Center. He said initial reports indicate the vehicle strayed off the road and then overcorrected, causing the vehicle to drive off the other side of the road and roll over into the brush. He said ambulances and a rescue crew were on scene within seven minutes of the 9-1-1 call and had the entire scene cleared in 40 minutes. Staff photo by E.J. BRIEFLY Volunteers needed for camp clean-up PENDLETON — Organizers of the children’s day camp sponsored by the Pendleton First Presbyterian Church are planning a clean-up day at Westminster Woods. Volunteers are needed for a barbecue set-up and parking attendants Thursday from 4:30-6:30 p.m., and from 5:30-8 p.m. for the clean-up effort at Westminster Woods. Bible school goes on expedition PENDLETON — Pendleton Baptist Church invites kids to take a journey to uncharted territory. Vacation Bible School participants will encounter the unexpected waiting around every bend. On this expedition of a lifetime, kids will need to stick close to their guide in order to survive. Rib cook-off offers family fun BOARDMAN — Family fun and grillin’ in the sun is featured during the Scorchin’ Summer Annual Rib Cook-off. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the top three teams. In addition, a people’s choice award will garner $200. Pendleton Early Learning Center to get ‘soft start’ East Oregonian Despite initial concerns that the Pendleton Early Learning Center wouldn’t be ready to open for students this fall, kindergarten will start with every other grade Aug. 31 — just a little more softly. The Pendleton School District announced Thursday that kindergarten students will start the year with a “soft start.” During the ¿rst week of school — from Aug. 31 through Sept. 3 — kindergartners will be assigned a single day to go to school. “We believe the soft start will provide many bene¿ts for our kindergartners and teachers,” Center Principal Lori Hale said in a statement. “It will allow our students to adjust to the school environment in a small class setting, tour the school, experience a full day with lunch and begin making connections with the Pendleton Early Learning Center staff.” Kindergarten’s full-time schedule will begin Sept. 8. Kindergarten parents will receive a letter with more information on the start dates in August. East Oregonian The Irrigon man facing manslaughter charges and more related to the death of his 10-month-old daughter no longer has a trial on the docket. Travis Martin, 21, had a hearing Thursday in Morrow County Circuit Court, Heppner. Martin appeared via video from the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton, according to court Martin records, and defense attorney Robert Klahn of Pendleton told the court he was still waiting for investigative reports. Court records show Martin waived his right to a speedy trial on June 26. Circuit Judge Lynn Hampton removed Martin’s case from the trial docket and set the next hearing for Sept. 10. The state has accused Martin of harming his daughter, Savannah, on multiple occasions, including slamming the infant to the Àoor the night of May 27. The girl died the next day after an air ambulance rushed her to a Spokane children’s hospital. Martin has been in jail since his arrest on May 29.
