A bank employee at 7:11 a.m. reported the crime, and a Morrow County sheriff’s deputy took a report. •An Irrigon resident on Cain Lane at 8:21 a.m. reported the theft of her John Deere tractor. •Portland General Electric vans were the targets of tire VODVKLQJQHDUWKHSRZHUFRPSDQ\¶V%RDUGPDQFRDO¿UHSODQW$ PGE manager at 8:36 a.m. reported the company has a project about 500 feet from the front gates on Tower Road where the vandalism occurred. A Morrow County sheriff’s deputy took a report. •Smith Food Sales, Inc., 302 S.W. 16th St., Pendleton, a part of Smith Frozen Foods, was the victim of vandalism. An employee at the business at 10:18 a.m. reported the crime to police. •A man at 12:07 p.m. reported seeing people possibly stealing items from where his grandmother lives on the 51700 area of Highway 332, Milton-Freewater. He said no one should be at the residence, but there was a silver pickup there and he did not want to confront anyone. •A caller with the Bureau of Reclamation at 2:37 p.m. reported two cows with orange tags were loose inside the McKay Reservoir Wildlife Area. •A Pendleton resident at 3:33 p.m. asked police if he had a ¿UHDUPLQDORFNHGER[ZRXOGWKHFRQYLFWHGIHORQKHOLYHGZLWK be in violation of parole/probation. •A Pilot Rock resident on Northeast Douglas Street at 4:10 p.m. told police he is fed up with a neighbor’s dog barking whenever the owners leave, and when that dog barks the rest of the dogs in the area join the chorus. He said he did not want to confront the dog’s owners and asked police to speak to them. •A raccoon at about 4:30 p.m. on Northeast Seventh Street, Irrigon, attacked and killed a cat. The drug task force in La Grande planned to contact Pendleton police with more information. GRADUATION Boedigheimer graduates from St. Martin’s LACEY, Wash. — Austin Boedigheimer of Hermiston was recently awarded a Bachelor of Arts in interdisciplinary studies at St. Martin’s Univer- sity. Academic degrees were awarded to the 543 members of the Class of 2015 at its commence- ment ceremony May 9 at the university’s Marcus Pavilion. Vena had a charming and forgiving personality that attracted many people. She enjoyed any social activity that included her dog, such as outside restaurant dining, visiting a store, or going to the beach. She enjoyed card games her whole life, including up to the point of losing her eyesight. The joy in her face would light up a room while socializing and playing cards. In her earlier years she loved to collect things such as Beanie Babies, magnets, earrings, greeting cards, photos and other things. Vena was a longtime fan of the Pendleton Round-Up and enjoyed sharing her time there with friends and family. Traveling by motor home across the United States was another joy for Vena. She loved being on the road. Vena will truly be missed by many. She had an amazing circle of caring, supporting and generous friends and caregivers. We will all miss her cute and sweet smile and her charming, caring and brave personality. Vena was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck Adkins; parents Donald and Alice Patterson; brother Ron Patterson; sister Emilie Patterson; and dogs Patches, Buddy, Little Guy, Princess, Suzie and Mehling. Vena is survived by her children: Debora Burd and Edward Cox of St. Petersburg, Fla., Linda and Ron Chelsky of Happy Valley, Ore., and Julie Burd and Greg Lewis of St. Petersburg, Fla.; stepson Larry Adkins of Ohio; grand- children Zachary Chelsky, Anna Chelsky, Jessica Chelsky, Leah Chelsky, McKenzie Lewis and Katie Lewis; stepgrandchildren Virdeana Krcelich, Christo- pher Adkins and Nicholas Adkins; and dog Daisy. M I LT O N - F R E E - WATER — PEO Chapter AP of Milton-Freewater has awarded a PEO Oregon schol- arship to Chandra Phillips of Athena. Phillips, a senior busi- ness administration student at Blue Mountain Community College, will continue her education at Eastern Oregon University, planning to complete her degree during spring term 2016. She will receive $420 for summer term and $1,100 for the 2015-16 academic year. Phillips currently works two jobs to partially fund her education. Her job with the U.S. Corps of Engineers in Walla Walla will become her permanent job, contract specialist, once she earns her degree. One hundred forty-six women applied statewide for an Oregon scholarship. PEO International is a philanthropic organization dedicated to supporting women who endeavor to better themselves through education. Chapter AP earns money for its scholarships through an annual golf tour- nament in Milton-Freewater, and through a bed and break- fast run by Jean Ann Mitchell open to PEO members nationwide. She just celebrated her 80th birthday on May 10. She was born in 1935 in Portland, Oregon, to Donald Patterson and Alice Rosa Patterson. She attended grade school at Trinity Lutheran Church & School and gradu- ated from Jefferson High School in 1953 in Portland, Oregon. She Adkins married Lawrence “Larry” Fougeron Burd on April 26, 1956. The family settled in Pendleton, Oregon, in 1961 and became involved in the community and raised three daughters. Vena was a homemaker, childcare provider, and bookkeeper for Columbia Pump & Irriga- tion and Larry Burd’s Well Drilling. Following a divorce, Vena married Charles “Chuck” Edward Adkins on November 15, 1975. They spent most of their time in Hermiston, Oregon, and Vena was employed by the Hermiston School District as a sign language interpreter. +HUSDVWWLPHZDV¿OOHGZLWK taking care of her dogs, small farm and gardening. After retirement, Vena and Chuck traveled in their motor home for four years. They visited 48 states and stayed with family along the way. They ended up in Portland, Oregon, and Chuck passed away in 2004. From this time on, Vena enjoyed visiting her children and grandchildren. Vena was a strong lifelong supporter of volunteering in her community. As a Pendleton Jayceette member she was involved in many community development activities that included the 2A Basketball State tournament in Pendleton. As a member of the Hermiston Elks Lodge Emblem Club, she supported the Casey Eye Institute, Meadowood Springs Speech Camp, D.A.R.E. National Drug Awareness program, and other charities.
