The district began suing Daryl Kepler in October 2014 in Umatilla County Circuit Court. Kepler is the retired district maintenance director who in June 2014 pleaded guilty to theft and was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Kepler worked for the district starting in 1993, and in 2012 the district discovered .HSOHUIDOVL¿HGGRFXPHQWVDQG used public funds. The district’ suffered damages from Kepler’s actions, the lawsuit asserts, and he should have to pay. Kepler’s attorney, Brent Smith of La Grande, said the district miscalculated and “greatly exaggerated” the amount his client took. He said Kepler already paid $17,500 in restitution in the criminal case, and while he hopes there can be a resolution, he will be spend the next three months going through evidence and preparing for trial, set for Sept. 28. Bryan Wolfe Ranch, 80897 Wolfe Lane, Hermiston. •A caller at 9:21 a.m. asked Pendleton police to check on the welfare of three young children who may be victims of abuse. •An employee of Central Washington Asphalt, 53847 Walla Walla River Road, Milton-Freewater, at 9:29 a.m. reported the theft of a trailer and jackhammer. •A Umatilla-area woman at 12:03 p.m. reported someone stole her credit card statement from her mailbox and used her information to write fraudulent checks. The victim declined medical help. •A woman at 1:34 p.m. reported her brother-in-law entered her home on Southwest Lemmon Lane, Hermiston, yelled at her, threw things at her and SXVKHGKHU6KHVDLGVKHÀHGDQGGLG not know if he remained in the residence. •A driver of a white sports utility vehicle at about 1:45 p.m. may have given a counterfeit $20 to Southgate 76 & Foodmart, Pendleton. An employee did not know what kind of license place was on the vehicle or which direction it left, but it had a sticker from Voodoo Donuts, Portland, that stated, “I got VD in Portland.” •A caller with the city of Weston at 2:37 p.m. reported a semi-tractor loaded with a rock crusher and other equipment drove through town and over two bridges that have weight restrictions. The vehicle had Idaho plates and left out of town on Highway 204. •An Irrigon resident at 5:15 p.m. DVNHGWKH0RUURZ&RXQW\6KHULII¶V2I¿FH if her son, who has not had a license for six months, can drive his cousin to town. A deputy told her the lad could only take immediate family. •Two men at about 8:40 p.m. trespassed on a yard at Green Acres Mobile Park, Milton-Freewater, and threatened a man living there about his ex-girlfriend. The man called 9-1-1, and the duo left.
