THE GREAT NORTHWEST MATT McCORMICK (In attendance) THE LUSTY MEN NICHOLAS RAY Portland filmmaker Matt McCormick’s film is in- spired by — and recreates — a 3,200-mile road trip made in 1958 by four Seattle women who recorded their journey in an elaborate scrapbook of photos, postcards, brochures and receipts. Fifty years later, McCormick found the scrapbook in a thrift store and, charmed, set out to retrace their route, searching out every stop that the ladies had so lovingly documented five decades earlier. The resulting film juxtaposes the land and landmarks then and now, a double portrait capturing the eternal and the new. “The emotional un- dercurrents, along with spectacular cinematography and wisely restrained storytelling, make THE GREAT NORTHWEST a film that will awe — and quite pos- sibly choke up — anyone who loves the green-tinted paradise we call home.” — Willamette Week (2012 | 70 minutes) Robert Mitchum plays the rodeo star too busted up from injuries to stay on the circuit. He heads home to Oklahoma and stumbles into an offer to train an up-and-comer, Arthur Kennedy, whose mostly devot- ed wife (Susan Hayward) catches his eye. The story takes to the road with thrilling rodeo footage shot all the way from Texas to the unmistakable Pendle- ton Round-Up arena. Director Nicholas Ray takes the camera right into the gate with the bronco rider and all the way into the everyday life of the rodeo circuit. As filmmaker Jaccques Rivette wrote: “If art must re- veal ‘the heroism of modern life,’ there are few works that better accomplish this purpose.” The script was co-adapted by one-time cowboy David Dotort from a Life magazine story by Claude Stannish.
