H EPPNER M USTANGS
S TANFIELD T IGERS
Coach: Larry Palmer, 1st year
Postseason story: The Mustangs advanced their boys short
relay and one girl to state last season and
brought back two top-10 placings.
Key returners: (Boys) Kaden Clark, jr.,
relays/sprints; Jacob Moses, jr., relays/
middle distance; Jeremiah Petzoldt, jr.,
relays/throws; (Girls) Kelly Wilson, sr.,
jumps; Kaelyn Lindsay, jr., sprints; Emily
Cecil, soph., middle/distance
Key to the season: The boys return most
of their state relay team, and have upperclassmen scattered
throughout the track and field events. Several of those athletes
landed top 10 placings at districts last season, and should be
expected to improve this year.
The girls have fewer athletes returning, but have at least one
that enters the season as a top district contender. Kelly Wilson
was top five in triple and long jump, and brings back the No.
1 and 2 marks, respectively, in the CBC in those events this
year.
Coach: Eric Jensen, 2nd year
Postseason story: Boys: 18th in state; Hunter Braithwaite
finished second in the 400 meters at the Class 2A state
track and field championships.
Key Returners: Hunter Braithwaite,
sr.; Carlos Flores, soph.; Elvis Lock-
wood, sr.; Larissa Castellanos, sr.;
Bailey Watson, jr.; Cynthia Curiel, jr.
Key to the season: The Stanfield
boys track and field team sent four
athletes to state last season, and just
one, Braithwaite, placed. He took
second in the 400 meters.
The other three, Nino Castellanos (100 meter sprint),
Felipe Rodgriguez (pole vault) and Joseph Valadez
(javelin) all graduated, leaving holes in the Tigers’ pro-
gram. The girls placed sixth in the district meet and didn’t
sent any individuals to Eugene for the state meet.

P ILOT R OCK R OCKETS
Coach: Phil King, 1st year
Postseason story: The Rockets only took two athletes to
state last season, but both had top-5 finishes as Devin
Hasher placed third in high jump and Hannah Mitchell was
fourth in javelin.
Key returners: Devin Hasher, soph.,
jumps
Coachspeak: “It’s a really young group so
we’re kind of just trying to get them com-
fortable. We’re going to focus on person
goals this season.”
Key to the season: As a former hurdler
at Pilot Rock and then Eastern Oregon
University, Phil King was enthused to find
a strong interest in the event at his alma
mater upon taking his first head coaching gig.
“We have four hurdlers, which surprised me for a school
the size of Pilot Rock,” said the 2007 graduate. “That was
pretty exciting when I got here, because that’s obviously my
specialty.”
His hurdlers especially, but also the entire team, will fo-
cus on building solid technique before they worry about any
postseason goals.
But jumper Devin Hasher, who split sports last spring, will
focus on track this year and is one athlete with big expec-
tations.

I RRIGON K NIGHTS
Coach: Phil Joyce, 1st year
Postseason story: Only one Knight advanced to state;
Caitlin Hearn took fifth place in the girls shot put.
Key returners: (BOYS) AJ Timpy, sr., PV; Wyatt Hurley,
soph., DIST; (GIRLS) Nancy Mejia, sr. DIST; Alexus Wil-
iams, soph., sprints.
Coachspeak: “This is a good group of hardworking indi-
viduals.”
Key to the season: Phil Joyce moves over from Ontario
High where he acted as an assistant coach to take over

athletes from its district.
Last season’s only state participant, Caitlin Hearn, has
graduated, and the Knights only retain a few placers from
last year’s district meet.
Senior AJ Timpy is expected to compete well in the pole
vault, while Carlos Zacarius and Isaac Estrada have made
strides on the track.
