(AP) — A woman who told police she dug up her father’s grave in search of his “real will” but found only vodka and cigarettes pleaded guilty Monday. Melanie Nash, 53, was one of four accused in the plan to open Eddie Nash’s YDXOWLQ&ROHEURRNWKHQULÀH through his casket last May in a scene a prosecutor com- pared to an Edgar Allan Poe story. Police said she felt she was shorted in her share of the inheritance after her fa- ther died in 2004. They didn’t ¿QGDZLOOLQWKHFDVNHW Nash, who faced trial in March, instead agreed to plead guilty to charges of criminal mischief, interfer- ence with a cemetery, con- spiracy and abuse of a corpse. Her sentencing is scheduled for May 5. Two others pleaded guilty; a third person was acquitted. Nash told police she did not receive anything when her father died and had been thinking of digging up the grave for years to prove that her sister, Susie Nash, “hid the will.” Susie Nash has said there was only one will when her father’s estate plan was done in 1995 and everyone involved knew about it. In a written statement to police last June, Melanie Nash wrote that she met up with the others to go to the cemetery. She wrote: “All this was done for the right reasons and I know my father would be OK with it.” She ended her statement with: “What we all did was to dig up my father’s cof- ¿Q (GGLH 1DVK ORRNLQJ IRU documents. We did it with respect.” Her lawyer argued her statements were given before she was informed of her right against self-incrimination. But a judge ruled that she freely came to the police sta- tion after a warrant had been issued for her arrest and vol- untarily gave her statements. Eddie Nash, who died of a heart attack at 68, started an equipment business in 1979 still run by his family. He’s since been reburied. After her sister pleaded guilty, Susie Nash told The Caledonian Record that she is relieved the case is at last resolved but that the effects will linger. “It still leaves an impact on you,” she said. “Every time I visit the cemetery, I will be thinking of this.” PUBLIC SAFETY LOG THURSDAY •A Milton-Freewater resident at 2:23 a.m. reported the theft of power tools from her shed on the 1000 block of North Main Street. 3HQGOHWRQ¶VFRGHHQIRUFHPHQWRI¿FHU took action at 9:22 a.m. on Southwest 22nd Street for solid waste violations. •Pendleton police at 11:21 a.m. received a report of a possibly dangerous tree on property on Southwest Hailey Avenue and of pruned branches still on the ground, which could be a city code violation. •Three dogs at about 11:30 a.m. attacked a mail carrier on the 2400 block of South- west Nye Avenue, Pendleton. He called 9-1-1 and reported they bit his clothes, but he was able to kick them away. He said the dogs were a black Labrador, a brindle/ striped pit bull and tan and white small dog. He also said he encountered them before. •A man at 12:20 p.m. reported he found about a pickup load of garbage dumped on SUITS FILED his neighbor’s property at Howdyshell and Hagen roads near Pendleton, and the trash had a letter address to a person living in Pendleton. •A Milton-Freewater man at 1:11 p.m. re- ported someone stole his fence posts within the last month from along the 83900 area of Winesap Road, and now he saw someone selling similar posts near the 85300 block of Highway 11. •A Umatilla resident at 2:02 p.m. told police the person who stole her husband’s cellphone now is threatening her. •A woman in the Milton-Freewater area told law enforcement at 2:05 p.m. she sent $1,000 to a caller who said she won $1.3 million, and now they want another $500. She said she thought this was a scam. She was right. •Six females at about 5:30 p.m. fought at the corner of John Day Street and Chinook Avenue, Umatilla.
