RECORDS Wednesday, February 18, 2015 PUBLIC SAFETY LOG SUNDAY •A city of Umatilla man at 10:39 a.m. told police he thinks his girlfriend and another man vandalized his vehicle on Diablo Court. •A woman at about 3:40 p.m. at Pilot Rock Market stuffed a bottle of vodka into the front of her pants and sneaked out. The owner did not want to press charges but asked police to trespass the woman from the business. MONDAY •An Irrigon caller at 2:45 a.m. reported two people walked through someone’s yard near Idaho Street and Highway 730, stopped in the middle of the road and then went back to that residence. A Morrow County sheriff’s deputy was not able to ¿nd the pair. •A Milton-Freewater man at 3:42 a.m. reported the theft of his car from the 200 block of Northeast 14th Avenue. •A Pendleton man at 8:44 a.m. asked police to contact his neighbors on Northeast Anvidon Street about their several dogs after the pack tried to attack his children. •A man at 12:40 p.m. told Pendleton police he walked his granddaughter to bus stop on Southwest 28th Street, and some kid came out of a house, yelled obscenities, and threatened him and the child. •Pendleton police at 3:30 p.m. received a report that a wom- an threatened to punch another woman’s 8-year-old daughter. •A caller at 3:53 p.m. told Pendleton police that four juveniles near Southwest 13th Street threw a cat so hard into a ¿sh pond the feline vomited water. •An Ione resident on Dry Fork Road at 4:04 p.m. reported an early ’90s blue Ford van slowed as it drove by his residence. He also said “a really creepy guy” drove it. •A man at 4:26 p.m. reported his 1995 Ford F150 pickup was missing from Southeast Greenwood Street, Irrigon. He said he received the information second-hand and the pickup may have been winched to a trailer. •Two cars westbound on Interstate 84 near Boardman tried to force a third to pull over. The driver called 9-1-1 at 6:12 p.m. and said one car would get in front of her and slow down and the other would drive close behind her. One was an older red car that was “banged up,” and other was blue may have been a Buick four-door with a large minnow across the windshield. The two cars turned off at exit 168. •A woman at 8:21 p.m. asked police to meet her at the Pend- leton Veterinary Clinic because someone mutilated her cat. •A woman at 11 p.m. reported two people she knew were trying to break into her room at the Sub Zero Motel, Irrigon. Rice Melvin E. ‘Mel’ Baker Madras February 22, 1934-December 4, 2014 Pendleton November 4, 1925-February 15, 2015 Larry G. Rice passed away December 4, 2014, at the Hospice House in Bend, Oregon. He died from natural causes with family by his side. He was 80 years old. Larry was born in Briton, South Dakota, on February 22, 1934, to Lloyd and Rachel Rice. ,Q WKH IDPLO\ moved to Portland, Oregon, where Lloyd worked at the shipyards. Later the family moved to the dredge camp, Texas Bar, near Ukiah, Or- egon, where Larry attended school. Larry married Lorelei Rice (nee Hinton) on April ,QKHMRLQHG the Navy where he served as an electronic engineer work- ing on the aircraft and aircraft carriers’ radar systems. After four years in the service he returned to Ukiah, where he and Lorelei raised WKHLU ¿YH FKLOGUHQ /DUU\ worked in Ukiah as a logger, felling timber for Gene Hol- iday and Leroy Britt. When he retired from logging, he worked as a maintenance man for various apartment complexes and hotels in Ore- gon, most recently at the East Cascade Retirement Center in Madras. He was a loving and dedicated husband. Larry never stopped working. He loved woodworking, yard work, and help- ing out friends and neighbors by cook- ing. He was very competi- tive, you could never beat him at chess, cards or pool. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Rachel; sisters Eleanor Beers, Patti Maupin, and Wanda Rice; brother Jim Rice; and daughter Joanne Rice Maulding. Larry leaves behind wife Judy; broth- er and sisters Darrel Rice, Deanna Rice Thomas; and Jeri Rice LeMaster; children Larry Rice, Jeannine Rice Discher, Janet Rice Ruark and Jamie Rice Thurmond; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held in Madras, Oregon, at the Mt. Jefferson Memorial Park on February 21, 2015, at 1:00 p.m., with refreshments following. Melvin was born November 4, 1925, to Collins and Orba Baker (Galloway) Baker in Pendleton. He had two brothers and two sisters. He was raised and educated in Pendleton. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy and served his country in the &HQWUDO3DFL¿FGXULQJ::,, After four years in the Navy he was honorably discharged in 1947. On December 10th, 1962, he married Betty J. Brown, they made their home in Pendleton. He was employed for 30 years at the Eastern Oregon State Hos- pital where he was an administrative supervisor. Mel- vin was a member of the VFW Let’er Buck Post #922. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty, at the home in Pendleton; stepsons Richard R. Brown and Ste- phen D. Brown, both of Pend- leton, and step- daughter Sharlyn Briggs of Yakama, Wash.; 10 stepgrandchildren and 15 stepgreat-grandchildren; two nieces, two nephews and many friends.
