Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.pioneerchapel.com Truman Alvin ‘Punch’ Cross Rustin A. ‘Rusty’ Brewer Pilot Rock Hermiston April 28, 1924-January 23, 2015 April 17, 1924-January 23, 2015 Truman Alvin “Punch” Cross, 90, of Pilot Rock died on Friday, January 23, 2015, in Hermiston. He was born on April 17, 1924, in Sherman County, Oregon, to Truman Adelbert Cross and Winifred Muriel Thrash- er Cross. He was raised south of Ru- fus, and attended local schools there until the family moved to Eastern Oregon in 1937. He attended Pendleton Jr. High and High School, graduating in 1942. Truman also attended Uni- Cross versity of Oregon for two years, but was interrupted by WWII. He served in the Army, and was in the European The- atre, England, Belgium, France and was in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war he came home to help on the family ranch southwest of Pendle- ton in Coombs Canyon. He married Velma Mae Hascall on February 22, 1947, and began raising a family. They purchased their ranch on Rocky Ridge southeast of Pilot Rock where he raised wheat and cattle. He was an active member of the Soil Conservation Service and often hosted meetings at the ranch. Williams, 86, of Pendleton died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, in Pendleton. She was born Feb. 8, 1928. Arrangements are pending with Pendleton Pioneer Chapel, Folsom-Bishop. Marilyn Joyce Terjeson, born King, of Pendleton, Ore., died January 22, 2015, surrounded by family at the age of 87. Marilyn was born in Helix, Ore., to William E. King and Vashti (Hoskins) King on April 18, 1927. She graduated from Pendle- ton High School in 1944, and attend- ed Eastern Oregon Normal School, Washington State University and the University of Ore- gon. Marilyn married James Terjeson on February 19, 1949, in Pendleton, Ore., and moved out to Terjeson the Juniper Can- yon ranch. They had two children, Robin on November 29, 1950, and Matthew on July 4, 1952. In 1960, the family moved to Pendleton, Ore. She and Jim spent time traveling the world and took cruises in Hawaii and the Caribbean, as well as trips to Norway, En- gland and Ireland. In 1945 Marilyn got her teaching certificate and later taught math at Athena High School. She also worked and taught bowling at Pendleton Lanes in the 1960s. She was an avid bowler, golfer and card player. She played the piano and organ, and was al- ways talking. In more recent David Lamp Hermiston June 12, 1959-January 17, 2015 Oregon; sister Lynne Far- zati of Clearfield, Utah; and brother Owen Lamp of The Dalles, Oregon. He was married to Su- san; they had three children: Jordan Lamp, Emily Nord- strom and Victoria Lamp. David has two grandsons, Jim- my Jack and Levi. David died on January 17th, 2015, after an amazing, heavily fought bat- tle with esophageal cancer at the age of 55 years. McMahand David Lamp was born on June 12, 1959, in Portland, Oregon, to Frank and Loretta (Pasto) Lamp. He grew up in North- east Portland, and graduated from Benson Polytech High School in 1977. David Lamp was an extraordi- nary fellow known for his broad intel- lectual skills and community spirit. Lamp David’s communi- ty spirit was exemplified in his tireless efforts in serving through the Ford Foundation (training local residents in leadership roles) and the lo- cal Rotary Club. He was also active in the Toastmaster’s Club. You would treasure him as a friend. David had special skills with computers and electronics, especially small motors. He eventually became part owner of Wilde Electric Motor Company in Hermiston, Oregon. Destiny Theatres Longtime Hermiston leader Rustin “Rusty” Ar- chie Brewer passed away at his Hermiston home sur- rounded by his family on Friday, January 23, 2015, at the age of 90. Rusty was born in Hammond, Indi- ana, on April 28, 1924, to parents Herbert and Marga- ret “Marne” Bloom Brewer. Rusty and younger brother Fritz were later ad- opted as adults by Alexander Silveria, whom Rusty called the dad of his heart. While a young- Brewer ster, Rusty’s fam- ily moved to the San Francisco Bay area, where he graduated from Lowell High School. During his years at Lowell, Rusty earned multiple “Block L’s” for competitive diving and worked as a lifeguard at the Fairmont Hotel, where he did exhibition diving. In lat- er years, he was the diving coach for Hermiston’s sum- mer swimming program. After high school, Rusty attended University of Cal- ifornia at Berkeley for a year before enlisting in the Army Air Corps and serv- ing during World War II. Following the war, Rusty enrolled at the State College of Washington, as Wash- ington State University was known at the time, earning a coveted spot in the Crimson Circle honoring his com- mitment to scholastics and service. While Rusty was at Washington State, he met his wife, Beverly J. Brew- er. Rusty, luckily and con- veniently, had the same last name, and a running chuckle before the wedding was that Beverly would not have to change her monogram. The pair were married in 1950 and both graduated college together that same year. Rusty went on to grad- uate from Lewis & Clark Northwestern School of Law and passed the Oregon State Bar exam. In 1957, the Brewers settled in Hermis- ton and Rusty established his law practice. Rusty was an active member of the Or- egon Bar Association for 57 years, during which time he served on many committees, but was especially proud to serve as chair of the Govern- ment Law Section, which he helped create to assist at- torneys working for public agencies. An integral part of Herm- iston business and civic activities, Rusty served as Hermiston City Attorney for 45 years, beginning in 1958. He was involved in sever- al organizations including presiding over the Oregon Water Resources Congress for a number of years, act- ing as secretary and attorney for the Hermiston Irrigation District, and assisting the local school board as attor- ney for 10 years. During his time working with the Hermiston Industrial Corpo- ration, Rusty served as the secretary and attorney and was instrumental in helping bring Marlette Coach Com- pany to the area. One of Rusty’s dreams was to be a “farmer/ranch- er,” and in his spare time he launched his cattle ranch in the backyard pasture. Check times daily. Hermiston Stadium 8 moved his cattle ranch out of the back yard and eventually had a farm where he raised alfalfa, wheat and sand. There were no strangers in Rusty’s life; he truly en- joyed people and if you crossed his path he wanted to know you. Trips to Safe- way, the post of- fice, or even walk- ing down Main Street were op- portunities to visit with both new and lifelong friends. His children grew up believing he knew everyone in town, because not only did he talk to everyone, but he knew their names. Rusty treasured and nurtured his network of acquaintances, who encompassed everyone he met anywhere. Rusty was a willing vol- unteer, always ready to as- sist. He loved the pro bono work he did for non-profit organizations and group causes, which led to one in- stance of being “paid” with a goat named Suzy. There were very few civic activ- ities that Rusty was not in- volved with over the years. Rusty believed education was the key to improving lives and could always be found on an educational committee, whether it was Hermiston High School, Blue Mountain Community College, or the Oregon State Bar. Rusty was preceded in death by his parents, Alex- ander and Marne Brewer; brother Fritz Brewer; and his wife Beverly. Survivors include daugh- ters Kristie Brewer Lemmon of Hermiston and Melissa Brewer (Dennis Soapes) of Seattle, son Rustin P. Brewer (Beth) of Vancouver, Wash., grandsons Jared Lemmon of Seattle and Tyler Lemmon of Hermiston, and grand- daughter McKelvey Brewer of Vancouver. “Rusty Brewer (was) the epitome of that Greatest Generation. He served his country in war, he served his community as a public servant, he has provided for and served his family. In a lifetime of service there are great acts and simple acts and I don’t think people like Rusty are concerned with the difference; for they do as they have always done,” stated his son-in-law Den- nis. There will be a celebra- tion of life at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center at 1035 S.E. Ninth Street in Herm- iston on Saturday, January 31 at 2 p.m. There will be a public viewing at Burns Mortuary, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Janu- ary 27th.
