Tho word-of-inouth Who's Who of the bootlegging industry In Ohio lists her thus: Kaukonen Amy, 24, beautiful and elegant, physician, mayor and mag istrate of Falrport;; elected year ago; cleaned up the town and filled up the workhouse with Volstead law violators and raised Cain general ly; give her a wide berth she's bail mediclno for bootleggers. Mayor Kaukoncn Is in New York to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Finland's Independence for one tiling and to look into tho booze situation here for another. "In all the raids I've directed in Falrport," she said in an interview, "and In all the cases I'vo tried I've found it hardest to get evidence against tho woman bootlegger, men are afraid of her. "How did I clean up Falrport? Kaslly. I got the detectives busy and sentenced lots of violators to the workhouwe and fined others. Habitual bootleggers were driven out of town." "If you banished me I'd refuse (o go," said one interviewer; but the observation didn't get much. She agreed that things were pretty bad in the east and, when asked how she would stop illicit drinking in New York, Mayor Kaukonen answered; "Well, New York's a pretty big city. Still I think the samo methods we used, in Falrport would get re sults. I'd get detectives that. I could trust on the trail. Put I suppose in so big a city as this the mayor hasn't I time to hear all the magistrates' booze cases. "The other day in Buffalo I saw what I had not seen since prohibi tion became effective. Everyone in a cabaret. In a downtown block was drinking openly from flasks." Mayor Kaukonen seemed sur prised. "Go on," some one suggested. "Well, that's all. Kveryone was drinking openly." "Oh!" Dr. Kaukonen was asked if she in tended to call upon Mayor Hylan. "I'm afraid I'll be too busy," she said. She Is going from here to Bos ton. The woman mayor, who is of Fin nish descent, said she would not be a candidate for re-eleetlon. She in dicated that she intended to stay in politics, however.
