Nov. 1. The bRttleshi, versus aircraft controversy will short ly become a hack number if the new tvue of machine being constructed by the British Air Ministry is rated a suc cess. Known as the cugaroo. this ma chine is literally a winged naval de stroyer. It Is intended to be used, at tho outset, for coastal defense pur poses. Fitted with a very high pow ered engine, it will have a range, for either bombs or torpedoes, or over one thousand miles. It is a three-seater machine nnd will be a most effective weapon, when operating in large numbers, in repell ing not only invading scacraft but also aeroplanes and airships. A Zeppelin would have no chance against it because a feature of the new design is its ahllitp to climb at a tremendous rate. The cruising speed of the machine will bo about three miles a minute. Four machine guns will be fitted into the coastal defense plane. These are so arranged that there will be no "blind spot." There will be equal faci lity for firing in any direction.
