The "Milwaukee" is electrified over considerable of its mileage and the service rendered is universally praised. Travel over that line is swifter than on the steam lines and is free from smoke and cinders. Naturally people patronize such a line. The electrified road is also in better , position to handle freight at a Tofifc Data given here over a year ago by an offi cial of the Milwaukee shows mat one electric locomotive does the work of three steam locomotives. That means a lower op erating cost and such reductions make lower rates permissible. rThe time is coining when all northwestern railroads will be operated by means of hydro" electric power. White coal is the natural fuel for our railroads because it is abundant here and is now going to waste. It is inevitable that it will be harnessed and put to use. Pprtlahd cannot afford to see electrified rail roads running into Seattle from the east and not have the O.-W. R. & N. electrified also. To keep up with the pace the O.-W. also need's to modernize. , In the task of promoting development of the Umatilla rapids project so as to make a vast amount of hydro electric power available for transportation uses as well as for other purposes Portland and the O.-W. Battered into a mass of debris by German guns, Rheims ca thedral, following the armistice, was a mecca for souvenir hunt ers. Thousands of members of the A. E. F. visited the ruins and, French authorities declare, many carried away pieces of statu ary and other elements of the fabric of the old cathedral. Parts of the stately edifice, put in place hundreds of years ago and bacred to every French heart, were priceless. The reconstruction efforts are aimed toward replacing all former portions that can be recovered. The French people hold that it is an insult to Christianity and to the French nation for in dividuals to retain bits of the cathedral as souvenirs, according to Maurice Barres, member of the Chamber of Deputies and the French Academy, and leader of the campaign to collect all available pieces. "It is time that souvenir collectors understood that this or that fragment of Rheims cathedral is a vital part of the organism of the cathedral and that organism seeks reconstruction," said M." Barres. Many fragments have already been returned, he says in his open letter to America, and it is to further this cause that the Legion is making its appeal to the former doughboys. In response to ttliese inquiries, chair man Schmitz is sending out approvi mately 10,000 circular letters to mem bers of the association containing de tailed information on' railroad and hott'l rates, and a schedule of the en tertainment features to be held in Se attle and Tacoma.
