That is one form of human nature, but the fact a man will ' do such things does not imply that the dog or the grandmother have done wrong and need punishment. The fault may rest en- I tirely with the man himself or with conditions over which he has : l'O control. i Collectively we are confronted with business depression but j Ihis rlonrPKsion as it nnnliuM to Umatilla countv has not come i upon us because we have a roadmaster who strives with intelli gence and zeal to see that our road work is properly done and that we get some results for our money. Nor has the depression come upon us because the county hires a mechanic who keeps county machinery in repair, whereas if the work had t be done in commercial shops it would cost more. Neither can we truthfully say that Ridgway has brought bankruptcy upon us. We may not like the car he uses and we may wonder why the sheriff's office cannot do the work he does, yet as to the finances involved the cold facts are that our special officer is producing a good income for the county and the chief losers are the gentlemen who sell cheap whiskey at high prices. Nor can anyone say that Fred Uennion is the man who put the crimp in credit and stopped the exodus to California when the winds grow wintry. The county agent did not hurt us any , hy buying distillate under an arrangement that saved farmers j riiany thousands of dollars. Nor has he done w rong in helping j stage a move to put an end to certain very unfair and improper j practices on the part of I'ortland wheat exporters. Those e:;-1 porters might profit should Mr. Hennion leave our midst. The j farmers of this county will not. As for Mrs. Van Deusen's work, ' the women of the country are the best judges but you can rest assured that we can cut Recorder Burroughs off from any sta-1 turnery, we can let the indigent poor go uncared for, we can j break the assessor's back, insult our good looking treasurer, we can insist that the courthouse slay as it is and leak rainwater at propitious moments upon the head of (lie circuit judge while he is in solemn session (this really occurred) yet, after doing all this j you wont notice any difference in your taxes and your financial I roblems will not be solved. j All this of course is prompted by the proceedings at the tax- ! payers' league meeting Saturday. That was a gathering called tor a worth-while purpose and there were many sincere men there who want to do something to remedy conditions. There i may be room for some trimming in certain spots, but many of the ' remedies proposed would make the patient grow no better fast. It is hard to find a local cure for an international disease and t hat is exactly what afflicts us. It was brought about by a visita-, tion from Mars and there is no use trying to blame it upon your grandmother or the county court. We will come out of our; troubles in time if we keep on working and keep our heads. Hut we wont gain anything by trying to run amuck. i sm -sim: iiwvks (:vi:i:ks. Even with the best of luck it will be many years be fore we can hope for the completion of the highly meritorious projects already on the map. That is one big reason why there is such hot resentment against Mr. Ottenheimer's scheme to grab from $100,000 to a million dollars of federal money for use on the I'matiHa-WaHida road. We need all the money that is available ami all the mon ey that will become available for years to come. This applies not merely to Umatilla county hut to every countv in Kastern Oregon and to the coast counties also. We have' a common cause for the reason that if our quota of federal money is divert ed and used upon the Wallula road there will be but" niggardly : sums available for roads the people need and for which the'v' have long been clamoring. ' The second reason the Wallula road is opposed is Invnuse h arguments for that road, even when considered from a strict- y loiuanu standpoint, are mythical. The campaign for Uallula road is based upon falsehood and the falseness of tl .i.ums mane nave heen thoroughly shown ami can be proven igain and again whenever the occasion demands. To put the iVallulii road on the map at this time when so many extremely mportant projects are uncompleted would be a crime against :ommon sense. tin w. -- :8 Stop! Go! 'M I V"- ' i.Vv .. ' ' . J- .
