' International News Service Staff i Correspondent. WASHINGTON, Oct. 25, (I. N. S.) w-s'tatesmen and naval experts meet ing to nrrange for curtailing the world's navies would have had n much easier time if they had stnged their conference back In John Paul Jonea day, or evVrnn Farragut's.' It wasn't so complicated then. Just look whut they have to know about today: Battle cruisers, battle ships, light cruisers, destroyers, submarines, air plane carriers, sixteen to twenty-inch guns, and nearly a million lesser de-. talis, all different. John Paul Jones or Farragut didn't need a card index and a flotilla of yeo men clerks to keep track of the dif ferent kinds of fighting ships he had to depend on. John and the admirals of his had had only three major classes of ships. Three Mnjor Classes, 1 Theoo were: The ship of the line, Which was the equivalent to our bat tleship of today; the frigate, or what would bo a modern cruiser, and the 1 sloop of war, or corvette, which was a, llcht cruising vessel. These three Classes made up the navies of the ! Dated this 20th day of Oct., 1921. W, R. TAYLOR, Citv Marshal. world up to Farragut's day, in the civil war. To further simplify matters, ships were ranked according to their guns, the guns being arranged in tiers in the ship's sides. Ships of the lino carried from 74 guns to 120 and were known as "74's" or "120's" although they al ways carried more guns than they wcm credited with. A a farther guide the gun tiers were marked by broad whito bars around tho ship lengthwise. The most ignorant look out man in the tops could tell instant ly whether a vessel "In the offing" was a formidable line ship or merely a light scout by the number of bands. Today it takes a naval officer and per haps a book of silhouetted shapes of vessels to identify another fighting ship on the horizon. Guns All Simple. ' The guns of those day3 were like wise simple. Instead of the 16-lnch and perhaps 20-lnch monsters of to day, arranged In hooded turrets along the deck, the guns of 100 years ago and less were mostly either the "long gun"or the "carronade." The former was used for heavy work, while car ronades were for short range and had something of the effect of a large shotgun. Where today the gun-pointer has to do most of his aiming by ab struse mathematical calculations the gunnerj' of the old days was remark able for its simplicity. Ijrt 'or Oo! The "pigtail-haired" gunner merely pointed his gun at the enemy point blank and let fly. He moved tho gun up, down, right or left, with a crow- BRINGING UP FATHER THERE t A VERY FINE. g . CH'KO! Tho usual way of finishing a naval battle was to run along side tho enemy, grapple your ship to his and fight it out on tho deoks. .In those days tho dignified fathers would have decreed that the navies wero to limit their armament to a cer tain number of "longs" and "carron ades," and the Ansel of Pcaco would have been safe.
