Wheat Slumps When
Outside Ruying Slackers.
CHICAGO, Aug. 27. (A. P.) -Lack
of outside buying and advices that Ca
nadian wheat was being offered at the
seaboard dn the same basis as Ameri
can grain caused a late slump in
wheat yesterday and tended to nullify
an otherwise strong market on the
Chicago board of trade. Wheat fin

steady to l-4c higher. In provisions
meats were generally Unchanged, but

The Canadian reports accentuated the
selling movement and as buying ceas

Corn was active and higher. A firm
undertone developed, which enabled
the grain to resist the wheat slump.
Oats followed the other grains, but
trade was dull and the range narrow.
Provisions were slightly more active
aiW there was some trade in Septemer

Export demand and bullish sentiment
on trvH farm loan law were factors in
forcing an advance in latd.

Substantial Recoveries
Made On Stock Market.
NEW YORK, Aug. 27. (A. P.)
The stock market yesterday made sub
stantial recoveries from its long-sls-
taine'd decline. Dealings were the larg
est and most diversified of any session
this month.
The extent of the rebound, which
began at the outsat and continued for
the' most tart at the close, took t"ie
shorts by surprise and resulted in the
wiping out of a large amount of "pa

The Menu Maidens
Dollars for display, but not a dime
for dinner. They lurk in restaurants
and hotels seeking men they .know; a
kindly smile or noif of recognition
means eats. Male pie-cards cannot i
escape their siren smirks. A vacant ;
chair opposite an impressionable he
person spells food. A bill of fare is
their target and they shoot all over it
like a buck private. A sirloin steak is
to them a light snack and they know:
about more salad than does the chef.
An 89 pound victual-vamp can out-eat
