One hundred dollars in Ijills and
currency was secured last night when
the Thomas Shop on Main street was
entered by tholves. The police enter
tain the theory that entrance wan
gained by springing the shutters at
the rear of the shop and then prying
open the window In the millnary de
partment. The doors were then open
ed. It Is thought, providing a sufe get-1 and Deputy B. F. Pace.
away. A small safe In the rear of the
shop was unlocked, and money to the
amount of about $100 was taken.
Checks were not bothered. Nothing
else has meen missed, and the police
were unable to find any clue to the
perpetrators of the affair. -The back
doora were open this morning when
discovery of the robbery was made.

Adds Another Musician.
Another talented musician added to
the force of Hoffman's Dance Spe
cialists has been made in the person of
Ixyd Mansfield. The new man hails
from Portland and Is able to play the
banjo, the saxophone and the piano.
He arrived Tuesday and has already
appeared with the orchestra. Hoff
man's specialists furnish music for all
occasions. Their headquarters are at
the Warren Music House.
Complain of Illegal Fishing
Complaints are still being made by
local anglers that over eager parties
are flagrantly violating the law by
fishing on McKay creek ahead of the
i season. One report today Is that
man driving in from McKay saw 12
'anglers whipping the atream though
the season is not supposed to open un
til April 1G. Those who are waiting in
good faith for the season to open re
sent the situation as they say few fish
will be left when llgttlmate fishing
starts.

City Jail Gets Clean-up.
The periodical renovation of the
city Jail la aboul completed again, and
the cells and fixtures of the place are
shining as a result of work that has
been done 'during the past few days.
The.' blankets and beddings have been
washed thoroughly, and other cleaning
has been done. Bight hoboes who
spent the night In the Jail were this
morning given their freedom and an
admonition to put distance between
themselves and Pendleton.
Modern Woodmen in Convention.
The county convention of the Mod
em Woodmen was he,ld lost night at
Milton. Delegates to the number of
four, and twenty-five additional mem
bers made the trip from Pendleton to
enjoy the good time. The delegates
were George Mason, L. Dunlap, Wil
liam Anderson and A. U Frankum. A
banquet was served at Freewater be
fore the convention. William Ander
son was chosen as county chairman
at the convention and A. U Frankum
was selected as county clerk. The
next convention of the order will be
held In Pendleton In 1925.
Garage Is Incorporated.
T. B. Swearingen, J. 'F. Jones,
Tracy Baker and Clyde McKay are the
incorporators of the Western Auto
Company, the company being formed
with a capital of $10,000. The officers
have not been choRen but it was stat
ed today that all four of the owners
will devote personal time to the busi
ness. The company will specialize in
garage woik but will also press Its
sales business. Mr. McKay Is now at
Baker attending the auto show there.
The building at the corner of Cotton
wood and Water, occupied by the com
pany is Owned by N. D. Swearingen.
New Rruta Kiutine I'nloadcd.
The new Sluts fire motor which ar
rived in Pendleton the first of the
week was unloaded this morning and
towed to the city hall building where
It was casually inspected by a large
number of men who stopped to ad
mire the lines of the big beauty. A
. long distance telephone message re
ceivea irom roniann last nignt gave
the Information that it would be Im
possible to have on Inspector here this
week to pass on the machine, so it
not yet ready for service. Fire Chief
W. E. Klngold Is taking the big ma
chine under his own special care to

A lease for one year at a monthly
rental of 110 was granted to C. M.

County Mlirary Gets Vimd. .
The county libtary will receive
something more Than $900 as a resiflt
of action taken by the city council last
night when a request from the coun
ty board that the fund be transferred
was made. The use of the old city
library rooms for the Boy Scouts for
a meeting place was granted. The city
will take no action-in the effort to
control the price of milk. It was di
vulged, when the matter came up for

change in the names of streets in Pen

council last night indicated its will
ingness to cooperate In the work.

Umatilla county under the soldiers"
sailors' and marines' educational aid
law from the time of its Inception
June 23, 1919 until March SI, 1921,
according to the report of Sam A.
Koser, secretary of state. Columbia
College, Pendleton, Echo and Pilot
Rock high schools each have one pupil
enrolled under the act and the sums
expended are Columbia College, 175;
Echo high school, $50; Pendleton high
school, S425; and Pilot Rock high
school, 162.50. Total disbursements
in the state, the report shows, reached
a total of $794,827.51. The enrollment
In the various educational institutions;
aggregated 6402., while the applica
tions representing transfers of students
from one Institution to another,. dupli
cate applications and canceled appli
cations numbered 627. Making up
the total was $790,86.09 distributed
among the institutions In which the
ex -service men were enrolled, expenses
department of public Institutions.!
