America's powerful track and field team continued to gather honors in the second day of the seventh Olym piad. It outclassed all other nations' combinations but its members were not strong enough individually to win every flrirt place, play in the classic pentathlon In which the Finnish star, E. LehtOnen, proved the best all- around athlete. In addition to the Americans scor ing the most points, the only world record was made hy Frank Loomls of Ihe Chicago A. A. in the 400-metre hurdles with :64, a second better than made by C. Bacon In the London Olympics in 1908. In both the hur dles and the 100 metre dash four of the six finalists were Americans, of whom three ran first in the hurdles and two first in the 100 metres. A majority f the experts at the fin ish of the 100-metre event but not the officials Insisted that J. V. Hols of the University of Missouri was third in stead of fifth, as officially placed, but a protest entered by the Americans was withdrawn when if was 'realized there was no going behind the official decision. In the other event the heats before the semi-finals in the 800-metre run. all the Americans retained places. The Americans performances netted them 43 points in the track and field events, 17 In the hurdles, 15 in the 1 no-metres dash and 11 in the pen tathlon out of a possible 66. Because of the non-appearance of Vincent Richards, his partner, A. Venchen, was permitted to replace Al- rick Man as the partner of L. K. Ma nan and Craig Biddle and T. It. An extraordinarily long set was the final one of the five set match which J. 8. Nlchol and W. Rand won from R. B. Baker and E. V. Page. It ran to thirty-eight games, Nichol and Rand finally winning, 20 to 18. The veterans. Reals C. Wright and W. J. Clothier put up a stubborn bat against Willis Davis and Roberts. The hard hitting; Californlana were forced to four sets to win. UTAH LISTS CONTESTS WITH COAST COLLEGES SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Aug. 17. (A. P.)
