Benny Leonard, the lightweight champion of the world, fighting his first battle in six months, knocked out the dangerous hitting Charley White of Chicago in the ninth round of a bitterly fought scheduled 10 round championship contest here Monday afternoon. The battle fought before a ctowd of 12,000 to 15,000 persons, was finished amid tremendous excitement and the end came when it looked as If white was going to stay the limit and perhaps hold the champion even. White carried the fight to Leonard nnd had the better of five of the first seven rounds. He fought a game bat tle and surprised his admirers until Leonard landed a smash on the chin early In the ninth round. He knock ed and partly shoved Leonard through the ropes In the fifth round. The champion fell outside the ring and the referee had counted four before Leon ard was pushed back Inside the ropes. Blow to etiln Count s. t A short right, hand punch to the chin which Leonard had been trying to land all through the fight was the start of White's finish In the ninth White dropped to his hands and knees and although dazed, refused to take the county. Leonard saw Instantly that White was badly stunned and rained blows with both hands to the weakened and fasf fading Chicagoan. After laying the jailer unconscious on the floor with an iron bar, 24 walked eUurely out. They obtained the keys from the jailer's pocket and opened the door. BOB ROPER OUTPOINTS AKRON, O., July 6. Captain Bob Roper outpointed Bob Martin, cham pion of the American expeditionary forces, in a fast 12-round contest here Monday, according to ringside crlfics. Both tried hard for a knockout but neither was able to land the decisive blow. Roper won chiefly because he re peatedly beat Martin to the punch. In the third he drew blood and from then on was hammering Martin In the face. Martin's body blows at times were almost terrific and Roper cautiously covered his midriff through most of the contest.
